Dr. Michael Borah is one of the leading physicians in this field and he is your man! He is also a primary care physician at California Pacific Medical Center on the East Campus (2100 Webster). I was referred to Dr. Borah after I had experienced a whole chartful of problems (later, I learned it was acute anemia from my kidneys shutting down). He handled my care with immediate and safe attention to my ailment. Instead of a blood transfusion for my anemia, he personally injected me with Procrit every month until my condition improved. If you ever have a kidney problem or an urinary tract infection (UTI) for example, check with him. Dr. Borah has a very professional demeanor, but for some unknown reason, he reminds me of "Jack Benny" - the nuance, the stare????

At first, my impression with Dr. Borah was that he was too into drugs as therapy and not open minded to alternative solutions. I come to realize that he is conservative when it comes to drug treatment, but sometimes that's what has to happen to preserve what kidney function I had remaining. He never prescribes meds too early or too much, likes to be very conservative is the impression I get. I had a total hip replacement surgery which could easily crash my kidney and after surgery, Dr. Borah visited me every other day to see how I was doing. We did our best, my kidneys did progressively get worst after my hip surgery and we are now waiting on a donor transplant. Luckily, no dialysis just yet... I seem to holding out very well dispute while waiting on a transplant. I can update this review after my transplant. But in the meantime, I highly recommend Dr. Borah for his expertise with the kidneys.

He had the best side manners when both my wife and I spoke to him about the transplant program. My transplant match exchange came through 2yrs later in 2016 and I've been 8yrs clear and doing well. There was an 18 month up and down period before stabilizing but since end of 2018, it's been been living on borrowed time. I was fortunate to have 3 or 4 friends volunteer to donate a kidney to me but all ended not the best candidates. On after transplant surgery and since that the pandemic, I have been lucky to have follow-up semi-annual video visits with Dr Katznelson on half the visits. He is always so positive at each visit. I just had brain surgery Tuesday and he stopby Thursday to see how I was doing and glad he did. It was a refresh for a very exhausting 2 days. Gave me a chance to clarify with him on a couple of things

I've known of Dr Katznelson since I found out I got sick and was put on transplant list. I've only ever met him once before in a video visit! He did remember me, it was nice when he first walked in, gave me a firm handshake and said "finally nice to meet you in person, we've only met virtually." So that made me feel nice when people actually remember you! He sat and gave me a lot of information I didn't have. He even confirmed some false information I was given a while back. So now that I have the real info, I'll be doing what I can with it. He was patient and answered all my questions. Great doctor! Highly recommend him to anyone!

During my inperson visits, he's unable to answer certain questions related to my blood test results and simply replies "Well, that's not important" or " We don't look at those results." Without any clarification. I've been a patient of his close to 1 year and there has been no care plan in place. I see him every 3 months and do labs every 3 months and sit in his office for a 15 minute visit that results in nothing other than scheduling another appointment 3 months later and the same lab work. He also has said during my inperson visits that "we don't have any more time. Just message me" when we still had ample time in our appointment window. He seems to want to rush through appointments and clear his schedule quickly. And if you EVER send a message through mychart, regardless of how simple and small it is, be ready to pay your full copay EACH AND EVERY TIME. He bills for every single message. I think he might be salaried at UCSF and thus chronically overbills every single mychart question to bulk up his compensation. No other doctor has this overbilling practice at UCSF or any other medical facility to which I have been a patient. I WOULD URGE YOU TO FIND A COMPETENT, EXPERIENCED NEPHROLOGIST AND STAY AWAY FROM DR. BREEGGEMANN. HE STILL OPERATES AS A RESIDENT / INTERN, DOES NOT YET HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO PROVIDE MEDICAL ADVICE TO NEPHRO PATIENTS AND A CHRONIC OVERBILLER. INSURANCE AGENCIES NEED TO LOOK MORE CLOSELY AT HIS ABUSIVE BILLING PRACTICES.

I've been fortunate to be taken in to the care of a great kidney doctor. With the help of his wonderful staff. Due to my condition I'm here quite often. Receptionist staff have always help me with my impossible schedule and they work to get me what I need. The nursing staff is amazing...I really do mean it. What I need in a staff is the basic ... Listen to what I have to say... remember me and my condition... Be knowledgeable in your field. Simple right ? You would think. A lot of faculties forget the basics... Showing that they actually care goes a long way. The department it self is very clean... I also find they run timely. They run a tight ship. Rarely having to wait an extended period of time. So be on time.. They moved last year from their old location to the 'B' plaza bottom level. It's nothing like before. A much better, needed location.

Dr. Roberts was my wonderful surgeon, I was fortunate to have the best! His surgical team of doctors, fellows and nurses were amazing as well. I was frightened shortly before going under, and the last memory I had was a surgical RN holding my hand tightly. My recovery on 9 Long was about a week. The care was really great! All of my RNs, interns, follow up doctors, students and Nursing Assistants were terrific. RN, Gertrudes was absolutely the best, ever! She remembered me from my hospital stay earlier in February, cannot say enough about her kind and gentle care. Only one issue with a Pharmacist who would not listen, husband and I reported him and a wonderful Pharmacist took his place, she was amazing. My fabulous donor (who is also my dear friend and coworker at John Muir Health) and I were part of a 8-way kidney exchange. Her surgery was the first at UCSF that morning, and it went perfectly. She was up walking that day, and doing so many laps around the wing, it was amazing. (I have attached a picture of us walking together for the first time, on day 3)! My donor was released on day 3 I think, and she is back to work doing well. Love her so much and couldn't have done this without her generous gift of love, sacrifice and kindness. All harvesting and transplants took place that day, except 1, I believe. The pre-surgery waiting room was filled with so much energy. Most of us were also in the same wing recuperating, 9 Long. I think I was the last to be discharged. I'm still recovering at home, and hope to be back to work in a few weeks. Still have some soreness, but my numbers are excellent and my follow up care with NP, Danielle Krieger has been fantastic from the first visit. All of he follow up care providers and staff, even the front desk are great. Thank you UCSF!

My Second Kidneyversary passed quietly this year, with a loving and thoughtful exchange between my…read morerecipient, Jeff, who is doing beautifully and is taking maintenance anti-rejection meds, which is standard protocol. I wanted to write an update about my experience after the living donation because I do get a number of PM's asking me how I'm doing in general and other inquiries from people who are considering donating or who have friends/family in need of a kidney. My lap sites and faux C-section scars (that latter of course was the extraction site) healed beautifully and were I the type to tan at all, they'd be imperceptible. I have had to buy some new clothes, because I dropped about 15 pounds (it was a very gradual process) and it's primarily because of the changes in my metabolism. Whereas I used to eat 3/4 lb of triple creme brie as a snack a few times a week and ingest LOTS of sodium-rich foods, I've found that I can't do that anymore. The natural result is losing some weight and a much healthier cholesterol number - which was high: 220 - during my screening phase and shocked my Coordinator. I recall feeling rather sheepish at the time. Pun intended. These days, I still enjoy rich foods and salty treats, but in moderation. I know when I've eaten too much because it makes me really sleepy and I literally need to hydrate and then take a Sodium Nap. No, I don't pee more, because I donated a kidney, not my bladder. What? I've been asked, and I do take pictures of lavatories; my collection for the Loouvre Album, I suppose. I do not need to wear incontinence products although I've never been opposed to the concept (even with 2 kidneys) sitting through those Harry Potter movies and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy tempted me mightily. My left side is slightly more concave - it's hardly worth mentioning; my waist is subtly more "nipped in". The only people who've noticed other than me are: the tailor and my physician, when I pointed it out. I'm pretty lean so I don't think it would be apparent for most other living donors. I've kept in touch with my Transplant Coordinator, Sarah and received a handful of followup calls from my patient-advocate, Wendy, who looked up some information on organizations that bring awareness about living donation to those who make inquiries. My phone number is on file with UCSF as a resource, (and several other places as well) and no, I don't charge $1.99 a minute. Oh! I can't take NSAIDS, just Tylenol... and other than the fact that my kidney is in somebody else's body, my life is pretty normal. I'm actually surprised at how people react and ask if it was painful, and why did I have such a major elective surgery... I laugh. Women who have C-Sections endure a much more invasive surgery, need a longer recovery time and experience side effects that last 21+ years. ; D I think the most difficult thing for some to consider giving up is alcohol, which you're supposed to abstain from pre-op and discontinue post-op. Then again, when a loved ones life is involved, I think most would rather have their friend/sister/brother/father/mother/child/cousin/husband/wife sitting with them at the dinner table than that glass of Pinot. I am allergic to alcohol and so for me, personally, it wasn't an issue. But, if at dinner and I'm nibbling on a few bites of cheese, I have been known to grab a fellow diner's wine glass, swirl and inhale deeply. I always intended to be an organ donor; it is even more special because I am a living donor, and continue to have a beautiful connection with my recipient. Thank you again, everybody at UCSF! The experience was compassionate, caring and will forever be my magnum opus. To those who are waiting for your gift of life, have faith and believe in the kindness of others. I wish you well and please do reach out to me; it will be my pleasure to answer any questions and encourage you until your gift of life arrives. With love, Kim "Kidney Donor" D.
