The folks who organise this wonderful music based event are all volunteers, busy people with a true social conscience, real jobs and real world experience. They do it brilliantly.
I've no doubt from experience that the cosseted local council senior management dolts (with free parking while we pay on the street) are not helpful to them.
This council and the councillors don't want our citizens to have a public park - there's lots of money for the asking but they won't ask.
They have already destroyed the annual Pride Event in the city, aided by councillors and they'll do the same to this group if they get the whiff of a chance.
Pride had been going about 15 years but council couldn't cope with their huge year on year successes. The council squandered a million quid on wake the giant - a giant failure perpetrated year on year at even more wasted dosh. They spent tens of thousands of pounds on a wake the giant banquet a few years ago - eight people bought tickets.
Truth is that volunteers do a much better job, offer great fun and enjoyment and they spend a lot less money doing so, and these folks prove it year on year just like Pride did.
We've gone on this music river cruise a few times before - wine, Irish traditional music band with accordion, tin whistle, acoustic guitar, no amps or electricity needed.
All this, Wolf Blass white and red wine and a two hour boat trip along Newry canal - the oldest man-made canal in the United Kingdom - for £22 a person. We sailed along and sang along.
It's a navigational canal and it's where the term Navvies comes from: the Irish Navvy.
I suspect it won't last - the council will allow a fixed bridge to be built on council land down from the lough gates. A fixed bridge will not allow boats through. No boats no Fleadh river cruises.
The council and councillors won't care and as for the rest of us? Well we will just have to suck it up. read more
