It felt as if this…read moreplace was somewhat disorganised, which was a shame, especially since I did happen to be a little peckish. However, what they did have was a pot of tea, and a decent sized pot of tea at that. Yeah, I could say that this place was reasonably nice, and did have a decent atmosphere, and some really comfortable places to sit as well, however, the lack of food was somewhat disturbing.

It was boxing day and although my wife and I were completely uninterested in food due to the enormous amount of eating that had taken place over the last few days, but the teenagers were just about gnawing their own arms off with hunger so we set about looking for dinner. We drove around for a bit but being boxing day, everything barring maccas in Hamilton was shut. Our teens may have been starving but they still turned their nose up at the Golden arches (which I consider a parenting win) so in desperation (all we had to appease the hungry hoard in the back seat was a few biscuits and the shattered remains of a Christmas fruitcake) we headed back to Dunkeld because we remembered seeing a Cafe on the main street. Dunkeld is a pretty small place - one main street, a couple of shops and a post office so the presence of a good Cafe was something of a surprise. It's well out of hipster range from Melbourne. The fact that the Cafe was open was an even bigger surprise given that everything in the larger town was shut. The food was good. I could only face a salad so I opted for a spicy chicken salad which was nice. My wife opted for the soup of the day (pumpkin). The kids demolished their usual huge pile of food. I can't remember what they had. I think risotto was involved with at least one of them. They had a couple of beers on tap. At least one of them was reasonable (well... James Squire) and more in bottles. Wine was available by bottle or glass. The big surprise of the night though was the price. My goodness. We have paid less for meals at top restaurants in the centre of Sydney. Paying that much for a light dinner in country Victoria was a bit of a shock. It wasn't a Christmas surcharge either. It was their regular prices. Still, I do credit the meal with saving us from being killed and eaten by a pair of hungry teenagers which was probably what would have happened if they had been shut.

It certainly appears to be the local Ararat well kept secret! The food was slightly above average price and the quality did not disappoint! The twice cooked pork belly was huge and delicious, and complimented beautifully by the veggies, mash and apple cider gravy. The eye fillet was cooked to perfection and I haven't tasted a red wine jus of such good quality for a sadly large period of time! Decided to share a sticky date pudding - my fav/default dessert, posted a pic of it! And it tasted as good as it looked!! If you look past the standard 'golf club' open, simple layout and decor, the food and service will be well worth a visit to this out of town eatery!
