I had a book published by Ithaca several years ago. Joan Mayor was the owner at that time. This was the biggest nightmare ever. She basically was less than ethical in handling the publishing and continues to sell the book without paying any royalties. This publisher is the biggest scam artist ever. I have since published with ethical publishers who have paid me by royalties. I even had a lawyer call her to give a cease and desist on selling the book. Ithaca has totally ignore this request. Right I after what I had written the yelp below...I received a check in the mail from Ithaca Press. I had waited since Oct. 2012. I am so glad they made good on the contract. I am still missing a copy of the book. But this is positive!! So, I raised the rating a little bit. Hopefully the other illustrator gets paid, too. Thank you!! Julie Written March 28th, 2014. I am a newer illustrator. I created at least 40 pieces of art (completed and sketched). I sent all the illustrations over a year and a half ago. I have not heard back. I was hired to do the illustrations, and I have not been paid nor received a copy of the book as I was promised. I have sent registered letters, and emails with the invoice. I have sent other cards such as Christmas cards, get well cards when the person was ill, etc... I have sympathized and have given them the benefit of the doubt. Well, I found out that they are not reachable, obviously. I signed a contract with this company in 2005. My first book. They produced it and told me that I would be getting 20% royalties ha...never saw a penny, never saw any sales reports and my book went national. I paid this publishing company $ 5,000 to produce, publish my book. Just found out that they should have sent me sales reports and also that they should have set it up to where I received all the money from all the sales of my book. when my daughter was 13, she wrote a series of 5 books. the first of which was called the persian rug. joan at ithaca press promised that they would publish and market and advertise. i payed them $5000 which was 1/4 of the money i received from a law suit where my eyes were chemically burned and permanently injured. we explained that my daughter and i were not advertising executives, actually far from it. we contracted with them and the contract did not even have the ucr 5 year limit. i was really stupid. i am educated now. we also sent another manuscript to joan and contracted with her before we found out that they did not ever intend to advertise. i could never get up another $5000 so they have my poor daughters second manuscript as a hostage in limbo. when we perused other publishers they would not deal with my daughter because they said we had dealt with a self publishing co and joan vehemently denied everything. my daughter stopped writing books. the worst is that my daughter trusted me to protect her interest. it has forever come between my dearest darling and myself. we had such hope as my baby is a genius and not just because she is mine. this broke both our hearts forever. at one point we had a box of books delivered. the pages and the cover curled up and a clear film on the cover separated. i called joan and she blamed me and said that it had something to do with humidity. i have a library of books and none of them are made of such poor quality. wtf. its been 10 years the editing of the book has mistakes as well. well joan said that was my fault too. i ok ed it. i'm not an editor either. these might be important works. i payed $5000 of blood money for my baby and we got 2 boxes of books, oh, we were on an internet radio show for advertising purposes that had 3 listeners. me my baby and joan. oh, and the dj who ever that was. i am now becoming rather famous and i'm going to make sure this never happens to anyone else.blessings read more
