There are a bunch of very important factors when choosing the best 'pączek'. Definitely the smell, what's on top and inside, the shape, dough and the general look.
Pączki on Starowiślna are offered only during the fall, winter and spring. The rest of the year, the place sells their own ice cream and is full of people who love it, and believe me there is always a long line to get some.
Back to my experience with 'pączki'. Honestly, it wasn't my favorite spot to buy this treat, but we were in the area and it was right there, right now, and we decided to give it a try. I was really skeptical because I didn't like the look. All 'pączki' were rather flat and on the smaller side. The cost was 3 zł each. We bought a bunch and the lady made a pretty, old style package for us.
On our way home we noticed oily stains on the paper which obviously meant these are going to be an oily. What a surprise after my first bite, I felt nothing but pleasure. The aroma of topping, dough and rosehip marmalade were outstanding. Bite after bite, I thought I was eating too fast, but it was so tasty and irresistible. The oily part added some moisture but it wasn't heavy at the same time.
I have to say, it was a good 'pączek' to have. It was also guilt free, because it was worth all the calories consumed. It wasn't promising from the first look, but satisfied my needs completely.
