Leftover Regrets: The Horror of a Bad Takeout Order. Even our dog refused it... Go to Unique around…read morethe corner instead! I recently ordered from the Mersea Island Fish Bar and was left thoroughly disappointed by the wait time. What was promised as an hour delivery turned into a grueling 1-hour and 50-minute ordeal. I could have prepared a gourmet meal in that time! Not to mention but when we called multiple times and the phone had no answer and we were left waiting. When my food finally arrived, the delivery driver saw we were upset and asked how long we were waiting. We proceeded to tell him and he didn't look surprised at all. In fact he was trying to apologise for their mistakes which was upsetting as it's not his fault. When we opened the bag of food it was extremely unappetising and there was something wrong with every meal. The plain burger was completely burnt! The other burger was dry and missing the condiments we asked for and the onions, were raw. The chicken burger was missing the lettuce. The cod looked completely limp, it was oily and tasteless. Finally the chips, well, they don't take a genius to cook. Not only that but they were slightly burnt and clear left on the hot plate for too long! They should have been thrown out after that long... if it wasn't on the hot plate the oil would have been old due to the colouration of the chips! Everything was so oily and greasy... even our dog refused to eat any of the food. I understand that things can get busy from working in the industry myself, but poor communication and excessive delays really ruin the experience for customers and other staff members... it's completely the owners fault and responsibility as he's on the line too. Such a disappointment to the old owners who used to own the fish bar as now it's taking a nosedive under this new management. I won't be returning ever again! Go to Unique around the corner instead!

The Mayfair Chippy - My to go order was so tasty. Fries could have been crisper but the fish was on point!

The chips were thick-cut, properly salted, and tasted like real chip shop fries instead of frozen fast food fries. The place was completely packed, so I ended up eating on the stairs about a block away, honestly felt like part of the experience. One of those spots that doesn't try to reinvent fish and chips. it just does the classic version better than most places. Would easily go back next time I am in London.

(I heard the non GF version was also excellent.) Platter came with flavorful mushy peas, tartar sauce, and a spicy mayo (or currry for the non GF platter). Chips were large and delicious. Portion was huge, and easily shareable. Delicious!! Service: It was ok. We waited in line for a really long time (more than an hour) but we were checked on from time to time. Once we were seated and ordered, no one really checked in, but we asked if we needed something. Ambiance: Cute outdoor seating. In door seating was okay. Reservations get to go into a back room which seemed nicer. Lovely side street in a crazy busy popular area. It's a solid 4.5 stars for what it is because the food was so good. I'd return. Tip: Make a reservation a couple of weeks in advance, or be prepared to wait...a long time...Or, skip the line to order takeaway and go enjoy your food!

On Christmas we received, from a relative, a gift voucher for The West Mersea Oyster Bar. So, yesterday, we decided to give it a try. We hadn't booked but decided to take a chance as it was quite early and the restaurant was just readying itself for the lunchtime rush. They found us a table, luckily, as a large group had a couple drop out. Loved, immediately, the ice box full of wonderful fresh seafood. It looked so inviting. Sitting at the table we were immediately asked for a drink order. My partner chose a white wine, a large one. However we were told there was only one size so we decided on two LOL. I chose a bottle of Efs. Unusually, a Turkish beer that we had tried on holiday. And, extremely unusual, Turkish wine on the list. The food was then ordered. Six oysters, plate of cockles and a platter for two. As it turned out, way too much for the normal two persons. All of it totally delicious. It arrived with a bowl of fresh bread and butter. Certainly, a feast. I find it odd, as a lover of oysters, that restaurants in a close locality charge up to £5 each whereas, here just over £5 buys you half a dozen. As they say in the Monty Python film, The Life of Brian, 'What did the Romans ever do for us?' Thank you for Gigas oysters. The locals are really good too. If you aren't into fresh seafood as it comes, then they do a fantastic range of battered fish and chips. Having seen what arrives out of the kitchen, may try them next time. Or the lobster, or the scallops, or the scampi or the, or the etc etc. It all looked brilliant. If you are down West Mersea and are feeling hungry, give them a try. You won't be disappointed.

I don't care if you're full, get the Lemoncello desert too. Light and delicious with the perfect tang. You really ought to book ahead, especially if it's cold and outside seating isn't an option. There's a reason why celebs and royalty regularly order from this place!
