My friend who was visiting from the US is Catholic and likes to visit a church or two in the different cities of the world she travels to. The lady in the gift shop at St. Joseph's said that the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was one of the most beautiful churches in all of Hong Kong. Although tucked behind other buildings and some construction, so not visable from street level of Caine Street itself at all, when we found the walk way to the church, simply magnificent! Being a secular humanist at best, I cannot speak to any custom, traditions or history of this space or the Catholic church, but it really is a lovely church. Based on what I read, it is about 120 years old. It is really large. We also discovered that they do not have gift shop on sight and when we inquired, they referred us to the Grand Building, 3/F on Connaught Road for the gift shop (we did not go there, but in their limited English, this is what the nice staff wrote down and told us).

So interesting to learn about the history of this Greek Revival Cathedral from Jacky of This Is Asia Tours. It is the oldest surviving Western ecclesiastical building in Hong Kong and the oldest Anglican church in the Far East. It was consecrated in 1852. Centrally located, the cathedral is surrounded by the Bank of China Tower, Cheung Kong Center, and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Building as well as former government offices. It is one of the oldest buildings in Hong Kong. So easy to walk from the St. John's Cathedral to the HSBC Bank as Jacky gave us such an interesting history lesson. One day after their attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attacked Hong Kong on December 8, 1941. During the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong, the cathedral was converted into a club for the Japanese. Many of the original fixtures were removed. The site of St. John's Cathedral is the only freehold land in Hong Kong. All other land tenure in Hong Kong is leasehold. The first pew is still reserved for the Royal British family in case of a visit to Hong Kong.

The hours on the website said they closed at 6pm, but when we went at 4pm, a guy was shooing all the visitors away and closed the doors/windows. No explanation at all! Kind of rude, but what's new in Hong Kong? From what we could've seen from the outside, it does have beautiful architecture. Not bad for being the second oldest building in Hong Kong!
