The customer service sucked, we were waiting in what we thought was the line but after about 15 minutes of waiting we asked what the wait time is and they said that it was a line of people who put their names on a wait list and then when we went to put our names on the list they said they weren't taking anymore names because they needed to let their servers catch up and they won't be letting anyone put their names on the list for another hour so we decided to leave. Keep in mind that we come at least once a year and they never had not accepted names onto their wait list but I understand that the servers were running behind but we were waiting for 15 minutes and they didn't even bother to tell us that they weren't accepting names onto the wait list. Food was great I'm almost sure the corned beef was homemade. The ambiance was small town cafe. I loved how the tables were decently spaced so you don't feel crowded. The service was good. I've eaten at the Island Cafe many times since the 1980's -- several relatives even worked here as waiters during the the summer months. I've never had a really bad meal here -- but I've never had a very good meal either. The Cafe is what it is -- a small town mom & pop place Most people will find it OK for breakfast, brunch or lunch. You'll get enough food to tide you over until the next meal but not much more in terms of taste, ambiance or service. Last week (September 2021) was the first time I've ventured out to eat at any of our local restaurants since COVID hit in 2020. I was a bit hesitant at first since the number of COVID cases has suddenly increased in our region and the CDC recently renewed their recommendation to mask indoors. Everyone in our group was vaccinated and in general the vaccination rate is fairly good around here. But evidence is mounting that even those who are vaccinated can get infected and/or transmit the delta variant. To my eye it looked like there are fewer tables, more widely spaced in the Cafe's dining room than in years past (though not all are six feet apart). If I'm correct about fewer tables, that is good. However, none of the staff was masked, very few customers arrived or departed wearing masks, and they are seating people at the counter with stools just three feet apart. If COVID safety is a concern for you -- take these observations into account if you decide to eat at the Cafe. Personally, I am unlikely to return any time soon. Came here for breakfast while we were in Minocqua and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was! It's your typical diner menu, and indoor diner setting. We were able to sit at the counter without a wait, but about an hour earlier, it was a one hour wait. So if it's a busy weekend for the area, expect to have a wait to get seated. First time here and wow! So nice to find a place to eat (whether cafe, diner, restaurant, etc) especially since moving up here to the northwoods that has a pleasant ambience. Very clean upon entry and seating, as well as the restroom. Our server was awesome, welcoming and very friendly. She was patient and bubbly while our children chatted her up a storm, haha. It was extremely refreshing to see other guests and the staff to not be wearing masks or being demanded to have a mask until seated. And of course, the food! Very delicious, did not disappoint. I myself had a caramel macchiato (very good considering it's difficult to find good coffee of any kinds in the northwoods lol!) and the farmers breakfast. Still good and one of my favorites after all these years. It is also for the most part largely unchanged. Sadly the chai shake and other ice cream selections are no longer available. Also I'm not sure what the lunch situation is. At 12:40 I was told that the lunch menu was "not available" yet. An all day breakfast menu is featured. One of my new favorite menu items is the Farmers Breakfast. This is scrambled eggs with sausage, green pepper, mushroom, and onion. It is not served over hash browns or American fries, but that would be available as a side extra. I wish I had more info on lunch; however, I'm glad they are still here and good. read more

My friend and I ate breakfast at Island Cafe three mornings in a row while on vacation in Minocqua. The eggs Benedict were so good that I had them twice. The third breakfast I had was eggs and corned beef hash. We were told the hash wasn't made in house, but it is made especially for the cafe and isn't canned. It was delicious! I've been coming to the Island Cafe for years. I've had such good food and service over the years. I've had the Greek food - the artichoke dip is so good as is the egg lemon soup. When I was still eating meat I had excellent salmon. They have a good selection for us vegetarians- some super good sandwiches!! I LOVE their breakfasts. Last time I went I had a frittata with roasted potatoes and fruit. It was just delicious. When I come for lunch in the summer I try to time it before or after th true lunch rush so I can be assured of outdoor seating. It is so enjoyable. Consistently good food for many years! read more

I visited this little place for the first time the last week of July 2020. They were operating fully except that their outdoor patio was closed. I thought this was very strange to have indoor dining open but not outdoor. Definitely a missed opportunity to promote public safety. We got food to go because we weren't comfortable dining in. The honey and cinnamon latte I had was ok, both times I got lattes there were coffee grounds on the bottom. The food was delicious and would definitely recommend if you are looking for a place to grab lunch. I would visit one of the other local cafes if you are just looking for coffee. A very unique, one of a kind cafe up north! We walked into this cute, mom and pop type cafe and were instantly greeted by a woman who was extremely friendly. We got there around 2:20, so 40 minutes before they close and the server didn't rush us one bit. I was with my sister and grandma and we had many questions, that she answered very honestly and kindly. We ordered the Spinach and Artichoke Dip for a starter, which was served with warm pita (the menu listed that it came with tortilla chips, but still delicious nonetheless). My sister, who is a vegetarian and often finds it difficult to find food to eat up north, except for house salads was instantly in-love with the vast available options. She ordered the Vegetarian Gyro and it was huge and definitely did not disappoint. She also ordered a to-go Spectacular Strawberry Spinach Salad for my mom, which was a big hit. My grandma got the Avgolemono soup, which was a daily special, and the side salad. She loved both of them and was pleased by how large the salad was. I got the French Dip Sandwich and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was sliced very fine and the French fries which accompanied it were very crispy and delicious. Overall, I would defiantly recommend this to anyone looking for a restaurant that is not your typical bar style restaurant up north. They are extremely accommodating, offer many vegetarian and vegan options, and are very welcoming to new customers. read more

Rude. After a couple-year hiatus, we walked in 75 minutes before closing. We had wanted to sit on the patio, but the chairs were up on the Tables and the patio was closed. We stood there for a second while the people in front asked if they were still serving food. Waitress mumbled a reply; woman was confused. I reconfirmed that they were closed, 75 minutes before their posted closing time. Walked out. Group of nice ladies leaving simultaneously said, "the service was terrible today, anyway". Stopped for breakfast this morning as a group of 6. We were seated promptly and our drink order was taken. Drinks took a little while to arrive and waitress advised she would be right back to take our order even though we were all ready to order at that time. Well it took a while for her to come back. Food was ok, nothing special, but very expensive. A side of bacon/sausage or ham was over $4! This for 3 slices of bacon. This was our first time there and I'm not in any rush to go back. I have been here numerous times over the years and this place goes back and forth between really good and utter crap. Today, and the last time I was in, were utter crap. First off, the person who thought up the "seat yourself at a clean table" thing in a tourist town in the height of summer needs to be fired. We waited 20 minutes to sit down and basically had to fight for a seat with people that came in after us. And when we walked over to an empty table to wait for it o be cleaned, we were yelled at to not sit there and had to walk back to the front like scolded puppies. The girl who sat us was very nice, agreed that the policy was dumb, and got us our drinks right away. We then waited 15 minutes for the waitress to come over and even say hello (same one that yelled at us... And same one that other Yelpers complained about, Jane) and take our order. She brought our food and then left and never came back until we were completely done (and this wasn't just us... Several other tables had to wait upwards of 10 minutes to even get menus from her). So the food: - The lettuce on my chicken sandwich was still frozen - The fries were so greasy they were dripping oil - I got almost all the way through my sandwich before I realized the chicken was still raw in places (see my pictures) Oh and you pay extra for everything, but they don't tell you that on the menu. Skip it and try one of the pubs in town. Or venture down to the ice cream place on 51 as you first come down Oneida street. It's not worth it and it's insanely overpriced to boot. read more

One word: Amazing We went for breakfast after a weekend getaway and found this little gem. The food was small town cafe good, but the service was unforgettable. The waitress (I think Sara) engaged with our 7 year old son and interacted with him as if he was an adult. Her attitude and positivity were unrivaled. When she learned it was his birthday tomorrow she brought him a massive birthday cinnamon roll (with a candle of course). We and the other patrons sang him happy birthday. Fantastic breakfast! I had the Greek omelet with a side of homemade tatziki. Ingredients were very fresh. My husband got the farmers breakfast and loved that too. My teen son got the two stack of pancakes and they were plenty for him. Best selection of tea in town, even better than the coffee and tea shops.
