Right in front of Rustan's Supermarket in Century City Mall sits Isla Café. This small kiosk has a few tables for dine-in customers, but judging by their interesting display counter, I think that their main offerings are colorful puto or rice cakes. This means that most of their customers have their orders to-go.
Since Isla Café serves Filipino snacks and they are located right in front of the supermarket, some senior citizens would make the kiosk their hangout place. I've seen older folks eating kakanin and having coffee at the café while they wait for their family or personal assistants do the shopping at the grocery.
At one time, I ordered their Hacienda Style Arroz Caldo and Suman Ube Leche Flan Sorpresa. I liked the presentation of the rice porridge, particularly their idea of using chicken inasal in the Arroz Caldo. But I'm sorry to say that the taste was wanting and the price too high.
As for the suman, it's sweet because of the 'secret' ube inside, but what I liked more about it was its gooey consistency, which reminded me of my hometown's biko in rich coconut milk. read more
