Tip: This Hindu temple has plenty of parking…read more On Monday, after having lunch with my best friend and his family in Thornhill post-funeral, I drove up Yonge Street to get a beverage at a Starbucks across from the Cineplex SilverCity in Richmond Hill. I made a left turn a street too early. I ended up at Vishnu Mandir. I like mistakes. This one was a good mistake to have made. Vishnu Mandir is a Hindu temple. I saw a statue of Gandhi that faced Yonge Street. This temple was so peaceful and calm on a snowy day. I did some exploring. What struck me the most was a beautiful gold statue. I soon learned that this statue is 50 feet tall of Lord Hanuman, who was greatly revered and worshipped in Hinduism. He was known for his strength. This statue of Lord Hanuman is the tallest one of him in the world. How 'bout that! Vishnu Mandir was established in 1979 as a spiritual temple, but also has these facets: - Canadian Museum for Indian Civilization - Anand Bhavan Seniors' Home - Academy of Learning and Montessori School - Global Care Outreach Program in Guyana - Sangeet Academy (Indian music and dance) - Lakshmi Sabha Women's Club I was in mourning mode, so I didn't feel like checking out anything in detail. However, I'd like to visit the museum and admire the various statues on this property. I noticed a couple of York region police vehicles parked in the corner of this temple when I was there. Perhaps the police officers needed to pray for their safety. It was a cool find. I'll be back. (416)

So here is a capture of both experiences…read more Prepandemic, there are offering of inscents and donation box and access to the museum, you can walk through all the rooms freely and go to the bookstore. The place can be a bit busy but not crowded on weekends. In the basement the bell would rig every hour with a vegetarian serve that is good for around $7 and you can go for seconds if theres still something-food tray style nothing fancy but very tasty. During pandemic, restrictions to the main room, no access to inscents and no access to other rooms or museum. No access to vegetarian lunch. What's fun is if you go to the washroom on the main floor you will pass a bulletin board with all the.politicians who passed through in person (or virtually during pandemic). Presently access if by appointment and the staff check for You Can Go app clearance. :)

It's nice to have a Buddhist temple in the city and within the neighbourhood. I usually don't go…read moreto temples regularly, but go annually as part of the Chinese new year's tradition at midnight for the blessing and welcoming of the lunar new year (almost like attending midnight Christmas mass). Normally everyone would have to remove their footwear before entering the temple, but because of the Chinese new year and numerous people coming and going they forego the rule. The temple itself is conveniently located on Bathurst just south of Dundas St. West and upon entering you're welcomed with incense for praying and blessing to the Buddhas. The venue is a decent size and decorated very tastefully and not too extravagant. There was definitely a feeling of zen upon entering and the energy is a positive feeling. They offer vegetarian lunches on new year's day in the basement and have an array of events going on throughout the year which I haven't participated in since I only attend the temple for new year's. Don't feel intimidated to visit the temple if you're not Asian as the temple welcomes everyone and there's always someone on hand to explain the customs and ceremonies.
