From freshly picked to frozen, most of what your heart desires can be found here. They also sell a large selection of house and outdoor plants at great prices. I love that they give back to their neighbors in need as well. This Thanksgiving, I saw a post on their social media page where they were giving out free vegetables for the holiday. During the warmer months, delicious roasted corn on the cob is available from the owner himself. You can get it with any topping he has available. There are also several food trucks that sell comfort foods such as fried fish, pork chops,,okra and ice cream on-site that are owned by the same family. This market has been in the neighborhood for years and is a family-owned and operated market that serves the community with healthy fruits and vegetables. This small little market has started up on Tuesday evenings in West Homewood. There are a few…read morefarmers in the back selling seasonal produce, but most of the booths are selling food and trinkets. The produce appears to be sold by local farmers and looks fresh from the field, but the night I visited there wasn't much of a selection. Mostly tomatoes, a variety of peppers, and okra. There were some baked goods as well. Other booths were selling hand crafted items like carved wood, clothes, and toys. I'd like to see more farmers and produce at the market, but I think this is a great little community building event on warm summer evenings. I plan on coming back. Maybe if I come earlier there will be a larger variety of produce.

My older sister loves in Fultondale and I visited the farmers market this past week for the first time. It's small compared to most farmers markets that I'm familiar with but for the smaller city of Gardendale I was pleasantly surprised at variety of produce and graciousness of the vendors. There were about five-seven vegetable/fruit vendors (one sold honey as well), a "jam" vendor (I think they sold jarred goods in general), a State Farm agent, a local church giving out lemonade and raising money for VBS, a pie vendor and funny enough a knife/scissor sharpener. And if you've got kids they always have a bounce house to let them get some energy out while you're shopping. They are open every Thursday afternoon from 1-5pm and have actually been around for about seven years, although they've only been located at the civic center for I believe the past three, having previously been located in the K Mart parking lot. Although the fruit/vegetable had limited product, it looks fresh and large and according to the man that organized the farmers market comes from about a 45 mile radius throughout the region. This past week the goods included eggplant, okra, corn, squash, jalapeños/chilies and blueberries. One vendor had peaches and huge blackberries and another also had tomatoes. I was disappointed no one was selling herbs or plants. Prices seemed good, we bought a dozen ears of corn for $5 and the vendor threw in an extra! We also purchased a box of peaches (about 5 large) for $3 and that vendor also threw in an extra--definitely friendly people! If I'm town I'll definitely go back just to support these local farmers, they're quick to share cooking recipes for their products and support other vendors. I hope setting up a yelp page for the market can get the word out and help grow this long time farmers market!
