Apparently this place has not been open very long (just a few months). There is a restaurant and a hotel - we stayed here as well as dined here. Perfect location as it is across the street from the Cumbres&Toltec Railroad. The rooms: we stayed here in two different rooms (2 nights). The rooms are clean and comfortable. There is a rustic- vintage decor feel in the rooms. The bathrooms are updated with good water pressure for the showers. A few things I would expect in a hotel priced as this would be little things such as Kleenex, adequate wash cloths, or a bath mat... which were hit or miss in the room we stayed. But upon speaking with one of the owners, this is their first time managing a hotel and so it's a work in progress. The top floor has a pool table and an outdoor terrace... both upstairs and downstairs have outdoor seating and fire pits for cozy fall nights. The restaurant: Food was decent. They were out of a few things which happens in a small town and deliveries happen once a week. They are open late which is a plus in Chama. Their cocktail menu however is pretty sweet and highly recommended checking out. Conclusion: Will stay here again. I am hopeful that with time, the few nuances will be ironed out. Customer service was great.

On Sunday, September 14 evening after taking the Cumbres & Toltec train, we arrived in Chama after 6 pm. There were only two restaurants open that evening. We chose the Iron Rail Inn that looked charming and the menu on line had good options for my son, wife and myself. Unfortunately, the menu on line was different from the one the server brought to us. She mentioned that it was a new menu as of that evening. They brought us complimentary some tortilla chips and a salsa with some corn that was delicious. I am pescatarian, but mostly vegetarian. The menu didn't have any fish or vegetarian options. I explained to the server what my diet was, she told me that she was going to consult with the chef. They had a smoked brisket enchilada on the menu but said that they chef will make it all cheese and I accepted the choice. It was a stacked blue corn tortilla enchilada as they are NM style. The quesadilla was OK with the red chile sauce, plain, no side. My son had The Bleu Line, Pannini that had smoked ham, grilled chicken, bacon and Swiss cheese. My wife had their soup of the day that was Chicken Tortilla Soup, but it didn't have tortilla strips as it normally has. The food was nothing special, besides the names, and it was not hot. The server was overwhelmed and we were too hungry to even attempt to have the food warmed up. As a former restaurant owner, I understand that a small restaurant bar the food options are limited and even in remote places fish is has to be an option. Chama attracts lots of foreigners and well traveled visitors that are vegan or vegetarian. Most restaurants in major destinations offer these options, including NM cites as Ruidoso, Taos, Santa Fe, Silver City, Las Cruces, even tiny Abiquiú. The place is lovely reflecting the style of the building with the small inside dining room with a nice gift shop and a patio up front with tables where we sat. I believe that the Iron Rail Inn has a great potential to be the best restaurant in town even with a limited menu.

Most of the motels are along the Chama River, so you have the option of strolling along the water or exploring easy trails, and this one has a large "backyard" space with covered picnic locations, a gas grill for guest use, and some fun statues of deer. (Live deer wander through all the time, joining the magpies, ravens, squirrels, and other critters well used to human traffic.) The breakfast that is included with the room is several cuts above the usual bland and packaged fare at chain motels, and it's served in a charming country-style kitchen/breakfast nook. Keurig coffeemakers give you multiple options for flavor, there's actual fruit juice, yogurt, bagels, pastries, muffins, and hot water for tea. The front side of the building, facing the road, features a dozen or so hummingbird feeders that keep the little fliers happy and swooping around. The housekeeping staff seems to be mostly male, which is uncommon, but they do a great job on both the rooms and the grounds. Oh, and the WiFi is super-fast and free. Highly recommended.

There were a few hotels listed on yelp, but this was the only one with a review. Once again yelp didn't let me down. Keeping in mind that this is a small inn in Chama NM, and not a big city, we got a kick out of some of the quirks. When I first tried booking the room, I got an answering machine because the keeper (Terrie) was picking her son up from school. However, I got a call back a little later and we reserved a room. We said we would be rolling in a little late and she assured us that she'd leave the back porch light on for us and the room would be waiting. The room we stayed in was in the main house and was wonderful. It was as clean and spacious as you would expect from a B&B. Along with the comfy beds, it had a small kitchen/sink area and some other furniture to lounge around on. It was warm and cozy, felt like staying at a relative's house. The only downside was there was only a very limited continental breakfast. For us this wasn't a big deal as we were in a bit of a hurry to hit the road. But don't plan on a big breakfast here. We would definitely stay here again if we were passing through.

Wow - just WOW!!!…read more Where do I begin? The meandering (and perfectly groomed) drive winding its way up to the lodge? The stunning architecture and solid feel of a finely constructed lodge with the proper scale and furnishings ... featuring leather, post & beams, and soaring granite fireplaces. A nice change from traditional NM architecture. Upon arrival, the staff pamper you starting with a warm greeting, and a sense of humor while attending to your every whim. This is an old time hunting lodge concept executed beautifully in this immaculately maintained high end structure. If you hate hunting, or taxidermy, leave your preconceived notions at home - come enjoy this luxurious retreat. It's not a spa, but the 36,000 acres of land surrounding the property are spectacular. I loved my brief visit. My guests for this impromptu NM motorcycle tour LOVED the lodge experience. In fact, all of us are "finagling" a way to come back soon, and stay longer to enjoy more of what the lodge has to offer. Cost might have been a tad-bit over $300/night ... which includes three terrific meals. A very fair price for this relaxing and high quality experience. Also, with so many activities to enjoy nearby like the train, trails and lodge activities offered, you can be as busy as you'd like to be. Today, I'm sending out personal notes today to staff with cash gratuities for each of them... That's how grateful I am for my experience... I still can feel the Glow. Note: personally, when I need to get away... I just want to hear "yes, of course, no problem!" I can promise you I only saw staff smiling, and eager to please and enhance the guests experience. Finally, apologies, my iPhone 11pro camera is on the fritz again... So I'm going to include some blurry images with apologies in advance. Come visit thus magical spot, you'll depart more relaxed and enriched PS - Thank you and a shout to Colleen in reservations - she's great!
