While fish still live there, it no longer houses the famous "California Golden Trout". The Fish Hatchery now holds an intriguing museum with tons of history, facts, and artifacts of the West's nature. The staff are very nice and thoughtful volunteers, whom are very helpful.

I contacted the manager, Christine, via email. She went above and beyond to accommodate our special request. She understood our situation and made every effort to ensure we had a comfortable and stress-free stay. The hospitality we received was on par with, if not better than, many of the major hotel chains. The room was exceptionally clean, comfortable, making for a very relaxing stay. We truly appreciate Christine's outstanding customer service and the welcoming atmosphere at Palisades Lodge. We will definitely stay here again whenever we're traveling through the Big Pine area. Check-in is incredibly smooth and convenient, too; it's all self-check-in, which you can do either online through their portal link or right at the kiosk downstairs. The nearby conveniences are incredibly clutch, too. If you arrive early before check-in, you can grab some great pizza right next door. There is also a cafe next door that opens at 5:00 AM, which is perfect for grabbing coffee and breakfast before heading out early to the lake. The Chevron across the street is super convenient when you need to fill up on gas, water, snacks, or grab-and-go food. Even better, there is a BBQ spot just a 1-minute walk away that is absolutely perfect for great post-hike eats when you're starving. I highly recommend staying here!

12/10/21 My first…read moretime driving from LA to Reno on the 395, I was worried about the snow. Good news: it was a beautiful, easy scenic drive! There were only 2 sections of this drive that had snow, so thankful as I will be taking the 95 to Vegas soon. For everyone else following and doing this drive, Bishop City is the best and most affordable (Gas) place to drive. Of course do NOT stop at the first gas station you see because they will be the most expensive. Quality/Quantity - In my youth, we would NEVER stop at these rest areas; it was always Starbucks or fast food. These rest areas are much easier to go in and out! I save $$$ and I don't end up over-caffeination or eating excessive amounts of fast food. I am glad to find a rest stop, it is very basic here, but again I do not need much. Atmosphere - Good to be able to take a break on a long drive. Don't expect much here. Service - None Price - FREE!!!!!! Owner Suggestion - Our tax $ at work, thank you.

I chose site 004 because it has a fire ring and is located next to the creek. The night was calm with the occasional rustling of leaves cause by the wind and the night sky visibility was fantastic for me due to little or no light pollution. The restrooms were well maintained and stocked with plenty of toilet paper. Small flying insects are plentiful in the area but not very bothersome. The site would be much better if showers were available. There is easy access to pay for your site at the campsite if you arrive without reservations, just look out for posted reservations before you occupy a site.
