This mural was painted during the first ever Indy Mural Est in 2019 by Nathan Holmes and Tre Smith, 2 members of Open Window Art. It is 30 feet wide × 16 feet tall. It is very colorful and has a lot going on.
Invader Zim is a comic book series that has been adapted to a Netflix dark comedy cartoon. The mural has many of the show popular characters, including Gaz, who is in the right tube filled with green liquid, Dib, who is in the left tube that is also filled with a green bubbly liquid, and Zim standing in front of the tube that Gaz is in on the right. Zim appears to be screaming with his arms outstretched. You will also see GIR riding a pig in the upper left corner. Like I said, there is a lot going on. I do really like how the incorporated the window, which were covered with a security screen in the mural. It does not miss a beat and a camofolged the windows very well.m
The center has one or two green monsters that is made from some letters that I cannot read, but it is cool though. You can see their eyes and teeth. Someone painted graffiti on the mural, but at least they contained it to the outer edge and not really messed with the heart of the mural.
It is a very nice piece, but there is a little bit too much going on for me. If you care to park and get out and take a closer look, which I recommend, it is easy to do. The mural is painted on a vacant building that overlooks an empty parking lot. That is where I pulled into. There is also street parking available in front of the neighboring houses.
I respect what they are trying to do, beautifying an otherwise desolate neighborhood and exposing many to the arts. Total disclosure, I was not aware of this cartoon and was not a fan of it. I guess it would be extra special if you were a fan.
Anyway, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other nice murals and graffiti on the same and adjacent buildings or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. read more
