Right from the start of my care around 12 weeks I felt so comfortable, cared for, heard and respected by both Erin and Heather. They were so good about providing me with all of the up to date data to make my informed decisions, they respected every choice I made and I was able to have a wonderful uncomplicated pregnancy with their guidance. If I ever had an issue Erin and Heather had about ten different holistic-minded approaches and even some more medical ones! I felt like I was able to be "crunchy" if I needed to be but also accept procedures and medicine if we needed something more. My appointments were an hour long and there was no needless intervention, nothing invasive like swabs or exams unless I actually needed or asked for it. I felt like I actually got to know my midwives, and be comfortable with them which is so important for giving birth. We also took the birthing classes with them which is a MUST! They had me so prepared, I was actually excited to give birth! And the birth went SO smooth - both my husband and I have said so many times, "we can't believe people would do this any other way!!!" Dim lights, quiet music playing, oil diffusing, TENS unit- Erin and Katie let me do my thing and labor in peace (which is a VERY stark contrast from laboring in the hospital) and when the time came to push let me tell you - YOU MUST TRY WATER BIRTH! The tub was such a strong pain reliever I was able to relax and push my baby out in only 45 mins! I felt soooooo taken care of the whole time it was amazing. After I gave birth my Golden hour was respected, my baby was placed on me and not aggressively rubbed or made to cry, it was just as birth should be - quiet, calm and beautiful. Erin did such a good job of caring for my newborn, we were all packed up and ready to go just a few hours later! No unjustifiably long hospital stay, no bright lights, no one barging in every 15 mins to check this and that, just calm. Quiet. Beautiful. Birth. If you have any curiosity about using a birth center, TRY IT! I already look forward to giving birth here again!!

As soon as we were ready for her to arrive she was there immediately, setting up the birthing tub with her assistant. The two of them worked wonderfully together, allowing my husband and I to get through the contractions in our own space. They kept the environment calm and collected. We ended up having the birth we had hoped for. Our appointments at her birth center were always pleasant. She has a section of toys for the little ones which helped keep my toddler distracted during the visit, I could watch her and also pay attention. My husband and I both recommend Erin. She's great!

Everyone was attentive not only to my daughter's needs, but the father's and mine as well. I expected to be seen as an intrusion or a distraction; I couldn't have been more wrong. There were no nurses bustling about, no strangers coming and going, and no smell of disinfectant. Jeanmarie was never alone in the room, one of the midwives was there at all times. Sometimes offering advice or encouragement, sometimes sitting quietly in a corner, sometimes reminding Jeanmarie to loosen her muscles or breathe deeply or have a sip of water. It was all about my daughter and her baby, not about fetal monitors or updating her chart. (Everything was charted, but quietly and not in lieu of tending to the new mom.) The room was warm, comfortable, and clean, and there was an atmosphere of calm anticipation. Jeanmarie chose the position most comfortable and productive for her. She was encouraged to vocalize during contractions. She was encouraged to nibble and sip during labor, which shocked and thrilled me. (My first labor was 36 hours. I was not allowed to change position or get out of bed, and taking a bite of cracker or a sip of water was strictly forbidden. What a fantastic difference from Jeanmarie's compassionate caregivers!) I was concerned about the 'what-ifs' - what if she starts to bleed, what if she loses consciousness, what if her birth canal was too small? They have a plan in place for anything unexpected and are watching everything more closely than they let on. Their priority was Jeanmarie's comfort, progress, and well-being. Thank you, Brookhaven staff. Forgive me, I've already forgotten your names but I will never forget how pleased and impressed I am with my only daughter's first childbirth experience. Grandma R.

However, the wonderful women at The Birth Centre of Charlottesville have been by my side during this difficult season. Together, they create a peaceful, safe, and welcoming environment for expecting mommas. I just delivered my 3rd baby, and I'm so thankful I was able to have her here. I have two other children, who were delivered at nearby hospitals. If I could go back and come to the Birth Centre instead, I would. Janna and Millie cared for baby and I so well after my delivery. I'm so thankful for them. I hope more mommas realize giving birth in a welcoming, loving, warm environment like this one, where you are heard and respected, is so much better than most L&D hospital experiences. I'd like to add, the waiting area is also wonderful if you have other kiddos. There are such fun toys for them to play with. These amazing women have truly put careful thought into every aspect of the experience.

I was shamed, manipulated, disrespected, lied to, coerced into making decisions that were not in the best interest of myself and the baby. I felt small, disempowered, unsupported, uncared for, vulnerable, and violated. I have posted a longer review on Google and Facebook (although it seemed they disable the reviews of FB so you might not see it). If I had stayed at the Birth Center, I wouldn't have dilated. My labor stopped progressing and at 7cm I regressed to 6cm because my cervix was swollen but it took begging the midwives to take me to the hospital 6 times before they finally relented. I am certain that if I hadn't gone to UVA, my baby, I, or both of us would have died at the Birth Center. Unfortunately, I am so traumatized by the mistreatment, coercion, lying, belittling, and manipulation that I experienced at the Birth Center that I don't think I will ever be able to trust midwives ever again. It has taken me more than a year to write this review because I experienced PTSD whenever I thought about how horrible they were and how my baby's life was endangered by their carelessness. I hope this helps someone else avoid this experience.

I'll apologize ahead of time for my lengthy review; however, I feel it's necessary to provide in…read moredepth details of my negative experience with hopes it could possibly help another family considering using this company for their infant care needs. I'll start off by offering some general advice for any potential customer considering using Virginia is for Doulas. First and foremost, I would most definitely consider getting a written description of what a doula can or cannot do. The scope of my needs stayed relatively constant over a period of a few months. Unfortunately, Tiffany (the owner) changed her mind several times as to what her doulas could or could not do and as a result, we had to look for help elsewhere at the last minute. As mentioned, this changed several times based on Tiffany changing her mind alone. Secondly, a written copy of their sick policy is a must. Decide on whether you want your infant/child exposed to a sick doula. In our particular case, our son is a preemie. We verbally requested that any sick doulas should stay home to avoid any issues for our son and his weakened immune system. Our doula was sick and our pediatrician recommended that she not return to work until 48 hours had passed after starting antibiotics. Tiffany still charged us for those particular days of our doula being sick. Even after, our doulas health continued to decline and she had to miss work for almost a week. Clearly it was a terrible idea for her to work due to her own sickness, let alone work around an infant with a weakened immune system to begin with. As a result, our entire family got sick that ended in multiple doctor visits and medications just from being exposed to our sick doula. Another clarification that is extremely important is what happens when your doula can't come into work. Not only limited to being sick but for any reason they can't make it to work. On multiple occasions my family was left in a predicament where fill-in support was not provided. There were several instances where we never even received a text, phone call or email from Tiffany or anyone for that matter about the status of finding a replacement. We had to sign up with a completely different agency that could provide back-up help for our family at the last minute. Aside from all the frustrations listed above, the lack of professionalism on Tiffany's part was the most unsettling of all. I'm a fairly open-minded person. I realize mistakes happen. No one is perfect. However, I wasn't expecting Tiffany's unprofessionalism with regards to my genuine concerns. I was caught off guard by her rudeness and condescending attitude as if I had no reason to be upset. In many responses from Tiffany directly, it was almost as if I was being blamed or at fault for how those given situations were handled and I was offended. Both my husband and I have 25+ years of consulting experience with a strong background in client management and customer service. Tiffany could benefit from improving the way she handles interpersonal communication with her long-term clients. While she was cordial and pleasant for the first few months, over time her attitude went from pleasant to disrespectful and ill-mannered in all forms of communication. Not something you'd expect from the owner of the company. Her behavior and way of handling certain situations caused me to want to cut ties with her on many occasions, but I remained a long-term client because of one particular doula named Summer. We adored Summer because of her compassion, her knowledge and her love for what she does and for all the babies she cares for. Had it not been for Summer, we wouldn't have remained clients for as long as we did. I'm hoping this review will help anyone who reads it and is considering going the route of hiring a doula and using this particular company. I'm simply being honest about my family's personal experience and I genuinely wouldn't want anyone else to be put in some of the situations we were or be spoken to in the manner that we did.

Tiffany and her team are extremely knowledgable and were helpful and supportive during my entire pregnancy through the delivery and post partum. I researched and considered other doulas in the area, but booked them after my initial phone consult because Tiffany was so friendly and informed, I knew I'd be in good hands. I ended up having an emergency early induction and was so glad to have Tiffany as my doula providing pain relief and support during what could have been a scary delivery - thanks to her help, my baby was born smoothly and I recovered faster than I did with my first child. The package we chose also included birth photography and follow up birth announcement photo shoot; other doulas try to double as birth photographer but I'm glad they provided a separate photographer so the doula can focus without having to multitask. My photos came out beautifully and I'm glad we'll always have them to remember this special time. My husband and I also attended the birth expo they hosted which was informative and full of freebies. If we have another baby, I will definitely book them again in the future! Thank you Tiffany!

When I went past my due date, Lauren gave me the reassurance and confidence I desperately needed. When I felt hopeless, she gave me hope. Her recommendations and introduction to Faith were invaluable in helping me go into labor. She held space for me to make my own decisions. She had the confidence and experience I needed as I prepared for a VBAC. During labor, she helped me move through different positions to encourage my baby's descent. She provided hands-on support and, when I needed it, tough love. I couldn't have asked for a better person to be there in the moments after the most empowering experience of my life. As a first-time dad, I can honestly say Shannon was invaluable -- not just for my wife, but for me too. From the start, she made us feel comfortable, informed, and genuinely prepared for what was ahead. She has this calm, thoughtful, and considerate presence that immediately lowers the temperature in the room. Nothing ever felt rushed or overwhelming because she helped us understand what was happening and what our options were. During labor, Shannon was incredible. She didn't just support my wife -- she supported us as a team. She walked us through next steps, explained the choices being presented, and made sure we felt confident in our decisions. One thing that really stood out to me was how she helped me help my wife. She showed me exercises and techniques I could guide her through to ease labor and keep things progressing. That made me feel involved and useful instead of helpless, which meant a lot. After the birth, Shannon's support didn't stop. She came to our home for a postpartum visit and helped us process the entire experience. She walked us through what to expect physically and emotionally in the days and weeks ahead, what to watch out for, and answered all of our first-time parent questions without judgment. She even helped find us a pump -- such a thoughtful and practical gesture that shows how much she truly cares. Shannon doesn't just provide information -- she provides confidence. As new parents, that's everything. We felt supported, knowledgeable, and empowered every step of the way. We can't recommend her highly enough. In November, I was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia and hospitalized. Due to my condition, I had to deliver my baby early via emergency c-section at just over 31 weeks. My baby is currently in the NICU. I wasn't able to have a prenatal in-home visit due to my hospitalization and was given very short notice of my emergency C-section due to my declining health. After my birth, I was put on magnesium, and my baby was sent to the NICU. My husband and I were both so terrified that the last thing I was thinking about was having my doula attend. I was afraid for me and my baby. I reached out to Shannon after my birth and asked if I could cancel the postpartum doula services because of the new financial strain of NICU costs/my hospitalization. She informed me that if I canceled the postpartum doula services, that both contracts would be void, and all services would be considered rendered. Remember, I did not receive a prenatal visit nor birth services due to my medical condition & hospitalization. The contract I signed stated that if the doula wasn't at your birth, you would be entitled to eight hours of postpartum services. Shannon explained that because I paid a 50% deposit on both services, none of the services were paid in full so I would receive nothing else moving forward. Although we had paid $3050 and the birth doula services were $2100, I would need to pay an additional $900 in order to receive the eight hours of postpartum services. She said I could "take it or leave it" and that she would not move money from one contract to another. I was shocked at her response. There was no solution offered where I could receive any services post-birth for the $3050 we had paid. More money had to be paid. This was literally the worst experience of my entire life, and I received no care or compassion at all from Shannon. She maintained that her responsibility was to her staff/business. During our phone call, I was talking about my hospitalization and she mentioned that all of her clients were hospitalized. I clarified that I wasn't hospitalized because I was giving birth. I was hospitalized due to severe preeclampsia and potential organ failure. Trying to work things out with her made a horrible situation even more stressful and terrible. She refuses to budge and maintains that we will not receive any postpartum services if we don't pay extra. My husband and I feel as though we have paid $3050 and have received nothing. We did not receive a prenatal appointment, doula birth services, or any postpartum care. Please see the last email I received from her.

I had hired another doula for my second son's birth and Brittany was my doula's backup person to allow for breaks/etc. At my birth, it was the first time I had met Brittany. At first, I was uneasy because you want your doula there and although I was okay to have my doula switch with her backup - I was at my most vulnerable state. But the thing is, when you meet Brittany - she is the most caring, supportive, loving, kind, and respectful person. I know why my doula chose her to be her backup and I am thankful she was there at my birth. She's just as amazing as my doula. I instantly felt a connection, felt loved and supported and I couldn't imagine my birth with her or my other doula. I was so thankful to have both doulas present during my births.
