It's only a stones throw from where I live and it killed me almost when I moved interstate a couple times as I couldn't find anything close that compared. Such a huge range of seafood!! From whole fish, that if you wanted gutted or filleted they'll do it for you and also will hand you the scrappy offcuts so you can make stock or whatever. No mess in your own kitchen, you beauty!! They also have a huge range of crustaceans and shellfish and all the iddy biddy bits like oysters, mussels and scallops. Not to mention all the different sized octopus and squids. One part I wish I could throw myself over and allow my skin to take over the aroma is the smoked fish!!! I freaking love smoked fish!!! I grew up on it as my Popsie always got some for Easter and Christmas. My parents also smoked our catches (usually Tommies) when we were kids. It was from then that stemmed my smoked fish addiction. All of their fish (apart from the smoked sliced salmon, I think!) is smoked on premises. You know this place is fresh when you see the workers out the back doing the sorting/filleting etc. However, there are a few fish that obviously gets imported but they label that to let consumers know. I'm off now to make a delicious seafood chowder and oysters Kilpatrick using what I bought today for my hubby's valentine's day meal. Yep I'm a good wifey!

The best time is probably 6pm sitting in the summer to time for the sunset at the end. The sunset view is incredible here. For the quality of food, one is definitely getting incredible value for what you pay here. When we arrive for our new year eve dinner, we were greeted with two glasses of pol roger, which is a fantastic start. We stood on the porch to enjoy the view before the meal started. The set menu is quite well proportioned. Not too much food or too rich. Everything was put together with ultimate care, without the excessive pretentiousness and molecular gastronomy of top restaurants. Everything was excellent. My favorites were: Oysters with cape Malay dressing: amazing concoction. Super fresh oyster but the best part of this dish is in the sauce. A bit of acidity perfectly balanced with a splash of chili oil. Arguably the best oyster I have ever had. Blini with hand picked crab, cucumber, and ikura - beautiful presentation. The blini is warm and soft and forms the cradle for the best of the ingredients. Ikura usually tastes a bit raw and overwhelmingly salty on its own. Here it was blended into the blini and crab into a delightful bite that piques your appetite to discover more. ---- The rest: Lamb tartare - pretty good. Interesting seaweed wrap for this. Salmon sashimi - super fresh sashimi. A bit bland. Ask for a sea salt and additional lime to brighten this dish. Pork belly and loin - like the sweet cabbage addition to this. More traditional dish. St George whiting with pumpkin broth - love the fish with the broth. The fish is perfectly cooked. I didn't care for the greens on top (it may be broccoli). Cheese supplement - nothing special. Can skip this course. Chocolate mousse with pistachio, cherry, and peach sorbet - this is probably my least favorite within the menu. The rich chocolate clashes a bit with the acidity of the cherry and peach sorbet. I had to eat the two parts separately. I liked the fruits more than the chocolate. --- For the wine by the glass, I had the lane vineyard Chardonnay. It was great with the meal. If one is driving after dinner, it's best to ration the wine intake given the wild animals on the road at night. Our waitress was a lady who just got engaged to the British chef who runs the place a week before our dinner (congrats!). She was super friendly and very helpful.

Last Christmas we bought a new BBQ. Huge 4 burner with an extra burner for the wok attachment, rotisserie attachment and warming plate and full hood with temp on it. Great BBQ! And could do soooooo much more than our old one that pretty much just cooked your meat (and really slowly......). So since we had the functions we wanted to use them. We cooked everything in that BBQ over that summer. And this was where we came for our full sized fish to dress and cook in foil. It was a great sized fish, not too pricey compared to say buying a roast of a nice cut, considering it was a whole fish and fed everyone. It turned out so nice and was beautiful once we followed the serviceman's advice on how to dress and wrap it and times to cook for. He was very helpful (considering we had never cooked a full fish before). We have been back since and got a georgeous salman there that turned out perfect too. They are really busy at Xmas time and I would advise you order if you have specific needs but if you just want to drop by and grab some seafood they usually have a good range in stock to assist.

In my experience the display and quality of the produce is far better than the fresh seafood shops in the central market and elsewhere. The produce is hand picked from selected suppliers. Their simple approach to restauranteering works in their favour, letting the food speak for itself and saving the customer from the bullshit. The menu consists mainly of fish and chip style dishes. Though simple, Paul's does each dish magnificently, taking the philosophy of "less is more" to heart. The fish and shellfish is fresh and well-prepared and always satisfying. My favourite dish has to be the spicy crumbed prawns - crunchy deep fried prawns with a lot of kick, and they never disappoint. For such a simple dish, I've never had better prawns anywhere else in Australia - and that's saying a lot considering the great seafood available in this country. The interior decor is simple and even a little out-dated - but I feel that this only adds to the restaurant's traditional fish-shop feel. The upstairs balcony area is perfect for balmy summer nights, and complimenting a plate of fish and chips with a nice cold beer makes for excellent dining.

The place has a really good atmosphere - they've managed to keep it down-to-earth and unassuming, but produce excellent dishes. The rawness (in terms of flavour) of each dish makes the whole experience more organic and real. You just want good seafood, and Paul's provides just that. There's a nice balcony sitting area upstairs, which is great for hanging out in summer. The place gets pretty busy, which is always a good sign.
