Ok, I admit I was a bit of a skeptic before coming here as I didn't think Narre was 'known' for…read moregood Indian cuisine. But amazing food can be found everywhere, and in the most unlikely places sometimes. Arya is definitely one of those diamonds in the rough. My nephew suggested we celebrate his birthday dinner here, as he is in love with their butter chicken! I could totally see why - it was brilliantly rich and creamy, and the chicken pieces just melt in your mouth (good for the seniors on our table!). We also ordered samosas, fish curry, lamb roganjosh and lentil dahl which were all spot on. The beef vindaloo was probably the only dish not on par with the rest, as the meat was fairly tough. But what stole the show for me was the chicken tikka! It was served on a sizzling plate which really gave the chicken that wonderful crisp taste, and kept it hot but not dry - in fact it was incredibly juicy, and came with a lemon wedge for that extra citrus kick. As we were one of the first groups to arrive, service was attentive and the dishes came out quickly. Later on as they got busier, it became more challenging to get a waiter's attention to order again, but they were always smiling and did their best, given it was a Saturday night. Told them it was my nephew's birthday, to which they played a super tacky rendition of Happy Birthday in surround sound (much to his utter embarrassment) and the entire restaurant sang along! Great to see other diners get into the spirit of things. Seems they are well prepared for special occasions and after such a lovely dining experience I wouldn't hesitate to come back!

I enjoyed eating the pappadum, basmati rice, yellow tadka dal and saag. All of the food was healthy, delicious and flavorful.

They were doing good business here on a Saturday night, both inside and takeaway. I was given a a nice greeting and seated quickly and efficiently. Lovely papadam to start with really good sauces that had plenty of punch. Started with an onion bhaji which is a favourite. There's no such thing as the perfect onion bhaji and there's lots of variation in my experience. The one here is a bit bit dry but still has pretty good flavours. Lovely warmth on the lips and they're a good size too. Excellent length on the flavour. I liked them with the sauce. I had lamb rogan josh for main. It's a good sized serve and clearly competently made. A good dish. The Kashmiri naan I chose was soft, delicate and lightly perfumed. The raita was a nice large serve and very good. The mixed chutney was flavoursome and quite beautiful. Rich, deeply flavoured and substantive. Service was friendly and quick throughout. This is a a good well run business. The food isn't cheap but the quality is good. I would happily return.

This is the second time I've visited this venue and it was just as good today as the first time. We discovered it on out last trip down, being hungry and not being sure where to eat we decided to go for a curry. Now that may not seem like a big deal but when your dining companion is Indian and a massive foodie who only prefer eating curry cooked by family you know you've stumbled onto something good! Tonight's special of tandoori mushrooms served on a hot plate was definitely noteworthy. We've tried spinach curry with both chicken and paneer (cottage cheese) peneer masala and a goat curry. All were super tasty and portions very generous. The freshly cooked Carlos naan is an excellent accompaniment. Looking forward to going back next time I'm down this way and trying a few more things.

    Tulsi Indian Restaurant

Situated in Somerville, Tulsi might come across as a regular suburban Indian restaurant. But the…read moreminute you step in, you realize that this is not your average, pedestrian Indian curry house. The décor is classic contemporary with definite Indian touches in the form of wooden artwork and photographs. The service is extremely professional yet friendly. A relaxed ambience with a view into the open kitchen where you find calm and composed chefs going about their business of sending out delicious food. There is a good wine list which includes ones from their vineyard; you can also request for matching wines for each course. The dinner menu is a short and limited one unlike many of the Indian restos where you can usually find pages after pages of dishes; a matter of quality over quantity. We started off on hot, piping samosas filled with a savoury peas and potato stuffing. Now, I have had plenty of samosas in my lifetime but what made this one stand apart is its buttery, flaky shortcrust pastry which is really hard to find in Melbourne. Next, we had the Kesari Murgh Tikka; melt-in-your-mouth chicken morsels with subtle yet flavourful marinade of spices and saffron. It wouldn't be wrong to say that this is the best chicken tikka I have had for a really long time especially in Australia. No artificial colours and absolutely juicy chicken bites. Highly recommended. We also had a tasting of Tandoori Champ or marinated racks of lamb. Delicious with the cooking of the lamb spot on. For the mains, we had steamed basmati rice and naan/bread accompanied with Saag Paneer (cottage cheese and spinach curry) and Jheenga Nariyal (King prawns cooked with coconut and spices). I hardly ever talk about the naan I eat at the Indian restaurants here but at Tulsi, you will want to. And that's probably because of the slight twist, the bread is finished off in an oven instead of a tandoor which makes it soft and pillowy, the perfect carrier for scooping the curries. I am usually not a big fan of saag but this one was delicious primarily because of the quality of the cottage cheese. Anyone who is familiar with paneer or Indian cottage cheese would be able to say that this one is prepared in house as it is soft and crumbly. The dish was mild just as it is prepared in Northern part of India. Definitely recommended for paneer lovers. And I will not be able to stop talking about the prawn curry. Perfectly cooked king prawns in a luxuriously creamy coconut gravy with just the right hint of spices. Again, totally recommended! Finished the meal with gulab jamuns (dumplings in golden sugar syrup) with a side of mango ice-cream. The jamuns were warm and fresh but could have been a tad bit softer but paired beautifully with the mango ice cream.

I'm usually wary of Indian restaurants in small towns.. claiming to be authentic. But this place…read morehits it out of the ballpark. The food is awesome with service to match. We showed up around 8:15 and took a while to order. And order we did: vegetarian entree platter, meat entree platter, salted lassi for starters. For mains: vegetable bengan (with eggplant, potato, tons of great onion, etc), daal, fish curry, chicken korma, paneer, naan, roti, stuffed pirata. A huge amount of food. The portions are reasonable and so are the prices - surprising for a resort town. The most expensive thing is $20-$25, while the average curries hover around $13-$15. The food was a little slow to come out, but the restaurant was almost empty and only one manager was on duty serving the whole place, and closing down... since we were there almost an hour after close. But they gave us excellent service - water on the table that was replenished, checking in regularly. Even letting us order paneer late in the dinner when other restaurants might have closed their kitchen. And, they gave us chai too. All that for $169, including tax and everything. You can believe we have the manager, Soni (I think) a good tip. Lest you think I exaggerate too much (I am white after all), I was there with my Indian mother-, father-, brother-, sister-in-law, and husband. They agreed it was really a solid meal. So, I give this place a 5 for service, 6 for exceeding expectations, and 4.5 for awesome food. The ingredients all seemed quality - good meats, no stringy fatty gross stuff - and the dishes were well spiced and delivered on all the classics. Definitely try this spot out!
