OOOOMMMMGGGG!!!!! I don't really even know how to put into words to describe this review about this gem, holy grail of restaurants that is India Jones. The level of taste, quality, innovation, presentation, creativity, delectability and pure magic will leave you wondering and questioning how it can be even possible to create and execute such perfection and flavors that we never thought were attainable. I am an American born Indian. I have been to India 6 times at various times in my life from a kid to an adult. My entire lineage is Indian. So I know what I am talking about when it comes to Indian food. I am also a very accomplished cook in my own right. I am the definition of a foodie. And I don't give high praise and accolades very easily. I barely even write reviews unless I have been beyond impressed by a specific restaurant. And this restaurant has not only impressed me, it has transcended me to a different place and a different mindset about culinary inventiveness. This is the Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Mozart of Indian restaurants. India Jones is in it's own class. It is a master class representation of Indian food on a level that I have never experienced before. I have eaten at some of the best Indian restaurants in NY, NJ, LA, SF, Chi, and many places around the USA as well as in London, Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore and many other countries. And obviously in India of course. I can honestly say that I have never had Indian food even close to this good and at this level in any restaurant outside of India. The authenticity of the spices, flavors and taste can only be compared as if I was dining in India, and still India Jones left a unique unforgettable impression on me that I've never experienced before. I dined there for 4 nights and tried almost all of the items on the menu and as much as I would like to say one or two were my favorites, I just simply can't choose. It was as if every single dish was handmade by god and on a pedestal all on it's own. I simply cannot tell you that one is better than the other because they are all a perfect 10+! It really doesn't matter what you order because your taste buds will be in total bliss. An explosion of flavors that keep coming from the second you put a bite into your mouth, as you chew and then swallow, more flavors keep popping up and then your sinuses and your head, chest and stomach permeate with constant aftershocks of delicious flavors that you never want to end. I woke up every morning in Playa with cravings from the night before like a drug addict who needed his fix, just waiting until dinner time so I can get more and more each day. And I stuffed my self so much that I could barely walk after each meal because I did not want to get full. I just wanted to keep eating. Sanat Patel and his wife Namrata are the most wonderful couple and such hospitable owners. They are so friendly and nice and make it a point to chat and get to know every customer that comes in. The entire staff are just a joy to be around and are so thoughtful, professional, friendly and they all have experience and knowledge to answer any questions about the food. This restaurant is a home run and every patron who I spoke to had the exact same sentiment and consensus. There are even local people who I met who really don't eat out anywhere else except India Jones. This restaurant deserves 3 Michelin stars! My only complaint is that there aren't 25 India Jones locations all across the world. Or at least one in Los Angeles where I live. But since they are a new restaurant, maybe Sanat can be convinced to open another location in LA. I would quit my job in a second to help him manage it. But for now, I have decided to make 2 trips a year to Playa Del Carmen because I just won't be able to go any longer without my IJ fix! I cannot wait until March when I go back! If you do to Playa Del Carmen, you must go eat at India Jones. You don't know what your missing until you miss it and you won't understand until you taste it. It isn't just a restaurant. It is a culinary journey, just as they say. And if you are a foodie like me and you are always searching for the perfect bite, then you don't need to search anymore. Because perfection exists. And it's name is India Jones!

Aloo gobi, papad, mint chutney, rice

Super friendly service and kind owners that create a very welcome and inviting atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed my aloo gobi -- asked for it very spicy , the owner nodded knowingly, and they delivered perfectly. It kinda had a subtle achari/pickled flavor to it which I loved. The roasted papad and mint chutney were good accompaniments. I can tell that this place is well liked by the patrons; it seemed full of families, some regulars, and some vacationers who mentioned returning several times during their trip. That said, for me it lacked the diversity and depth of veggie options Ive come to expect at a typical Indian restaurant. The daal was also as expensive as meat dishes which I found perplexing and left me a bit disappointed. And, I almost hate to mention it because I do feel like it was a fluke, but there was a bottle cap at the bottom of my water glass that I somehow I didn't notice until the end of my meal - must have gotten flung in there somehow from the table over maybe? Odd but no biggie, I let the waiter politely know on my way out. No issues otherwise, and I especially appreciate that they did not rush me out even though I came within an hour of closing. The bartender was very attentive and friendly as were the rest of the staff. I'd return to try other dishes for sure, and I imagine coming earlier in the day would probably be a better experience too.

    Chicken tikka trio

I have lived in Hong Kong most of my life where there is a mix of different cultures. There are many restaurants serving Indian food too. I visited India Jones in early February and I would like to compliment the restaurant's delicious food. This is the best Indian food I have ever eaten. We ate burrata papdi chaat and roti pe boti (beef short rib on naan bread) for appetisers and chicken tikka masala and goan shrimp curry for main course.

However, the food was terrible. We ordered Dal Makhani, Mix Veg, Mutter paneer, Garlic Naan. Everything was bad. No flavor. The mixed veg has 3x the spices but not properly cooked so you could taste the raw spices. The dal makhani was watered down. I have had better mutter paneer from a ready to eat packet in grocery stores. The Garlic naan has no garlic, and was from a packet. Plus, it had some terrible smelling oil on the name of Butter. I couldn't eat it. We only finished 50% of the food, that's how bad it was. Won't go there again. Turns out the owner is Indian, but he doesn't show up anymore. Has handed over the reins to some of the local women who try their best but it is not good enough.

At least not that I can see. The owner says he splits his time between New York and Tulum. I'm guessing he's not in the restaurant business in New York, but maybe he is. The evening's mishaps began with the drink orders. I asked if he had rye whiskey. He didn't know what that was. I ordered a Manhattan with makers mark and I was brought straight makers mark on the rocks. If the man could not hear me, he should've had the courtesy to come around the enormous table to where I was sitting. That's fine. I don't mind drinking neat whiskey. The second time was a little more successful. This time I was presented a Manhattan, but no orange peel twist or candied cherry. As far as the food goes, the tandoori dishes were unavailable the night we were there. The aloo tikki was ok if insubstantial. The pakoras were seemingly sans onions. I'm actually not going to continue. This place is on the skids and I hope they're able to turn it around. If you come by with a party of two and they still have the enormous couch seating and some few tables in the back in the "more mosquito area" then I would go to a different place if I were you. for the owner, I would suggest he consider redoing the seating in the front, if this place is to be more of a restaurant and not the ghost of a sheesha joint. He should also eat at some of the Indian restaurants in the New York area at his price point. He should then at least set his standards by those. Some decent flavors some times, but much more needs to be done.

I had a delicious lunch of the chicken tikka appetizer (tender white breast meat), onion nan, raita, and the included a little shredded dressed salad with creamy light dressing, and selection of tasty classic chutneys / sauces (tamarind, green, etc) A tiny nest of spun sugar on the plate was an unexpected high end touch. I also had a yummy chai and dessert. The tiny, intensely sweet galub jamun (like a dense deep fried donut ball soaked in syrup) was yummy, though lacking in the rose scent I typically associate with the dish... though that will probably make it more appealing to the island clientele who probably aren't used to floral flavors. Their tandoori oven is not to be taken lightly, as they're important for cuisine beyond curries. They are hard to come by and shipped circuitously from India. Directions: Go about 5 blocks south of the ferry plaza along the main seaside road Av Raphael E Melgar. Turn left onto Calle 7 sur, and go about 1/2 block from the sea. It's on your left. It's a bit hard to spot because the main sign doesn't face the sidewalk, though you can see the white tiled little plaza it's on, that houses 3 restaurants and a bathroom. They are to the right of a large established Mexican seafood restaurant and share the plaza with a tiny street facing liquor store.

Walking into an empty restaurant was our first sign of concern, but when the lady in charge didn't get off her butt to greet us concerns began to grow.  We entered anyway wanting to believe the reviews we read - they must have been paid reviews on yelp.. My pina colada was the worst I've had - EVER!  Tried to order but they didn't have Nan bread.  Seriously, an indian (dot) restaurant without nan.  Tried for plain basmati rice - no again.  They charged $5 for some flavored rice.  Have you ever been to an Indian restaurant that did not serve rice with the main dishes?  But not having lamb - no lamb at all - that section of the menu was out.  So it was chicken or fish or some unrecognizable vegetarian stuff with potatos. So we defaulted to two chicken dishes, Murgh chicken curry & Butter chicken along with an order of Jerra rice (had to buy rice!).. The dishes were VERY bland.  The murgh curry wasn't bad though and we did eat it.  It just lacked any real curry flavor.  The butter chicken was unlike any butter chicken I've ever eaten in any country in Asia or even the US..  It was almost Italian in nature with the overload of tomato sauce in it.  I've never had Butter chicken that tasted like tomato sauce.   It was horrid and we left over half of it on the table, along with that skanky pina colada. On the bright side the decor of the restaurant looks nice and the prices were not over the top.  More expensive than the value as it turns out. A very disappointing experience...
