They don't tell you until charges are removed that they auto renew without your knowledge and when I went online to cancel, I was meet with you have to call to cancel. Type Your Letter Dear Editor, I am so very disappointed and upset with this paper. I am well aware of the fact that you are running a business and that businesses are designed to make money. I, however, do not agree with the exorbitant prices you are charging for obituaries. When families are struggling with the loss of a loved one and trying to let everyone know about that loss the IR will stick you with a HUGE bill at the end. My family was very recently faced with this exact situation. My mother was an accomplished woman, so when we were done writing her obituary, it was a little over two pages on my computer. We of course wanted to include her beautiful picture in the obituary. The IR did make it easy to upload everything for them to then print the obituary in the paper. However, once we had it all ready to be posted and be printed for two days, we looked at the price. The price tag for two days of print and posted on the IR site was $1879. That price tag is criminal!! We posted a shortened version for one day. We also contacted two state wide papers who were more than happy to run my mom's obituary for little to no cost. If you are faced with this same situation, print the service information and at the bottom of the posting direct friends to "see full obituary" at the mortuary site to save yourself some money! read more

I'm embarrassed that this is a Montana company, but I see it's owned by Lee Enterprises. We called to cancel our subscription and got a big sales pitch from someone who barely spoke english. By the looks of their campaign donations they probably think the 2020 Presidential election was stolen. I'm an independent voter, and I don't see much about this paper that's " Independent ". read more

Made it impossible to cancel a subscription. In order to cancel you must call customer service and they are only open about 3 hours a day. It took about 20 minutes to get on the line and when I did, she tried telling me that she would lower the subscription price just for me instead of cancelling the subscription like I wanted. read more

Would rate this a zero if I could. They say you can manage your subscription online, however when you try to cancel, it makes you call in. 27 minutes later a representative answers and tries to talk you into keeping your account. I was told my subscription wouldn't cancel until august, and when I asked why it couldn't be canceled today I got some bullshit excuse. Then, after calling them out on their predatory behavior, they all of a sudden can cancel my subscription. When asked if they can send me confirmation that my account/subscription has been canceled, they give me a reference ID number for the person I talk to you rather than a confirmation number for the cancellation. I asked them for proof that my account was canceled and they were unable to provide me with any solid evidence that it was canceled. This company is predatory and this should be criminal. They also say that you can manage subscription online but that is untrue and false advertising. read more

As someone who has subscribed faithfully since 1987, I would give a minus 10 if I could! If the Independent Record hopes to survive, it needs to bring its customer service closer to home! It's not fair to the customer service person that she/he does not speak English with an accent that is readily understood to have to handle irate and angry customers just because the IR doesn't care enought to provide an actual SERVICE! Attempting to put my Mom's newspaper on hold while she's in rehab for strengthening. Called the 800 number and was on hold for 45 minutes. Went to the website and called the local number going through all the prompts as directed and "due to technical difficulties" was directed right back to holding. Customer service is nonexistent apparently. read more

During this time when papers are closing daily I would think newspapers would want to do everything that they can to keep their existing customers. That is evidently not the case for the Helena Independent Record. I paid for a full year subscription a couple of months ago. Last Thursday I moved to a new home, prior to the move I called the phone number from the how to reach us section of the paper after holding for 40 minutes someone finally answered and assured me that my address would be changed. I actually did get a paper at the new house the day we moved but then we didn't get another one until Monday and I haven't gotten another since then. I emailed them on Friday and Tuesday using the contact us section of their website, but no one responded. I called the circulation manager on Wednesday and left a message but my call was not returned. It appears that I will have to take them to small claims court to get the over $300.00 back that I already paid them. read more
