I had no intent to do reviews or take photos at the time, but I slowly started to do them anyway, and the more I did the more fun it became. I then made Elite and I was thinking that I will do a super cool spot for my 100th review like La Chine, Le Bernardin, or Izakaya MEW, But along the way I realize Yelp had become more than just food, restaurants, shopping and the photos you take, but also the friends you make and how they can make a difference in your life. I am dedicating my 100th review of Abundant Grace Christian Church to Leo M. because as my Yelp friend has been able to touch me from 3000 miles away. Being part of a church is not really just about attending services, it's also belonging to a group of people who are living out their spiritual journeys together, a whole lot of individuals who not just who happen to be together on Sunday mornings but much more of a lifestyle for them. I, growing up Roman Catholic in the Bronx meant big stone churches with Priest and Nuns and a lot of formality on Sundays and Latin. So attending service in a smaller wood frame church without the confession box, stands of candles or a holy water fountain was different. Plus I must mention the last time I attended church other for a wedding or funeral, Clinton was President. I was welcome by everyone as I passed entering the church and picking a spot to sit, From the table on the sidewalk with books, to the welcomes in front and the people siting besides me, and some of them I recognized from town and they were all warm and friendly, The congregation is very diverse as is the town. I told them this was my first time, but this is a small congregation and they already knew that. I told them my reasons for coming to this church without going into the full details and that I was had come to pray for someone. They gave me a welcome bag with a DVD, a book by Oswald Chambers, information card and a few pamphlets. They laugh when I said I was grew up Roman Catholic and they said we all have even the pastor. The service is lead by the founding pastor, Steve Hannett an apostolic overseer. From the start there was music and singing with the pastor playing a synthesizer with a choir behind him and and two more backup signers, one with another synthesizer and a guitar. The pastor was singing and preaching the Lord and was still rocking it 30 minutes later when he started playing the salsa drums, of course we were all standing on feet some with arm in the air and some hugs were coming my way. After a brief discussion on current events and a planed outings, today's message given by the pastor centered on Genesis chapter 26, the famine and the lords covenant with Isaac. His teachings are clear, full of love, faith and hope and delivered with real excitement and with explanations that anyone could understand. This church is spirit filled due to the congregation's interaction with each other and we followed up with the singing of ' I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord'. I had many thoughts and images of my life and what I'm doing cross my mind during the service and wondering how my the next day would be and where my present path would lead me.

On the inside the pitched ceiling with the stained glass windows and a beautiful altar make an awe inspiring view. They also have an old fashioned pipe organ which is still in use today. The congregation has definitely changed over the years since I have been living in the area as has the neighborhood. Since 1997 the parish has held a festival every July. It is the third weekend in July and occurs during the Novena to St. Anne. All ethnicities of the parishioners are reflected in the festival from Italian ( you have to try Sister Alberta's zeppoles), Filipino dishes, Spanish and of course the good old American hotdog which you can chase down with ice cold beer. They also run a 50/50 and have some games of chance in Centennial Hall. Even though the school has closed this grand old church serves as a beacon to the neighborhood that I call home.

I have attended other ceremonies in different churches around Jersey City but none offer the sacraments the way St. Anne's does. No cellphones were allowed that night which made everyone really pay attention to what was being done/said. The lights were off and we only had our candles lit. It was stunning. I did all 3 in one ceremony by attending the Sunday classes before mass. The church has this lovely historical elegance to it. Even though the Parish staff has changed, they are all still kind. I don't attend church as much as I should but when I do go I prefer the Sunday mass at 10:30. They also offer a Spanish Mass, which is held on Saturdays at 7:00 p.m.
