It may have been bad luck on my part, but the very first time I tried to go to this church they had a guest speaker. She was a professor/author at Portland State University. Her talk centered around how loneliness was becoming so prevalent in our society and she came into her talk with all kinds of statistics. Well, she certainly nailed me it's one of the reasons I went to church that day. Instead of getting a message of hope from the Bible I got a lecture from Portland State University that was full of stats. Yep, she hit the nail on the head, I am one of those statistics. I did not even stay for the whole talk. Instead of being uplifted I got reminded of how lonely I was. I felt a bit humiliated as I walked out with tears coming down my face. read more

Welcoming church to get into your spiritual groove (awesome group of musicians playing contemporary Christian music mixed in with an occasional hymn - every week it's a concert worthy of the "Schnitz" on Broadway. Solid Bible teaching church reaching all ages, all peoples. Real church should be for everybody! The apostle Paul says in 1 Thessolonians 5:11 to encourage one another and build each other up. Many support groups to meet all your needs here. Time to be who you were meant to be in the image of your creator, come and find your purpose. Wow. I am looking at some of these reviews and the people talking about everything but the church, I think need to actually go to this church with a OPEN heart. There was absolutely no reason to park six blocks away from the church, because they have a parking lot like not even a block away! Lol. My family has never had an issue with finding parking. The church isn't "so big". It's just right. The people are extremely friendly. Pastor Rick is GREAT. The sermons are just long enough and easy to follow along with. Worship team is great too. They have two tables with fresh coffee and hot water for tea, too. I'm going to get baptized here, in April. Come see if you'll love this church as much as me. :-) read more

We rushed in to Imago Dei late, tired, and overwhelmed. It wasn't our fault, really. We arrived at the campus of Franklin High School on SE Woodward nearly fifteen minutes before the church's 10:30 AM service. It took us twelve minutes to walk the seven(!) blocks from where we parked (the closest place we could find) to the auditorium. People in the neighborhood sat out on their from porches to watch the parade of Christians snake its way through the residential streets. I think there may have been some protest from the locals, though, because every block displayed a sign reminding the hip, young, Imago Dei-ers to be on their best behavior. They were. Childcare is in the gym, where they've got a maze of waist-high plastic fences to keep the kids in and bouncers to keep strange adults out. The friendly staff made us feel good about leaving our kids. Gwyneth Paltrow's little sister (I don't think she has one, but if she did) prevented us from entering the auditorium. ("Sorry, no seats left down here. You could try the balcony...") So we headed up to the cheap seats, where we were surrounded by 23-yr. olds who might have been protesting H&M's boycott of the city by wearing Arafat scarves and skinny jeans from the Gap. The lead singer of All-American Rejects (again, probably not the real one) wearing an official Imago Dei t-shirt kind of patrolled our section and offered help to people (like us) who looked out of place. Worship a fun, low-energy, guitars-and-an-African-drum affair. Pastor Rick McKinley preached a humble sermon admonishing the church for the condescending attitude some may have displayed toward more traditional churches. Rick seems like the kind of guy who didn't really want to be the pastor, but there was nobody else and it beats working in a warehouse. He's really laid-back (intentionally so), but seemed to know his Bible and how to use it. We looked for author Donald Miller (rumored Imago attendee), but I don't think we found him. It's hard to say, because we saw an awful lot of guys who looked like the photo of him on the back cover of Blue Like Jazz. Imago Dei is the kind of church you get lost in. It's so big that it creates it's own culture and sort of sucks you in. That culture can come across as cool-for-cool's-sake. If you use a Mac and love to hate Starbucks (and go to Peet's instead), you'd probably fit in. It seems like it would be hard to get to know someone just by going on Sunday mornings. It think that's why they have a lot of other little things going on- service around the city, art lessons and workshops, and the like. Imago Dei has earned a great reputation around the city for their community involvement. They are trend-setters in the evangelical community for their creative arts ministry and social action. Like a blogger who constantly checks his Statcounter hits, the church is keenly aware of their place on the cutting edge of emerging Christianity. If you're looking for a church that won't hurt your street cred with the hipsters, put your Bible in your oversized messenger bag and ride your fixie to Imago Dei. Spent another fabulous Saturday volunteering for Medical Teams International's Dental Van. Located in a great SE PDX neighborhood, this very large beautiful church played host for a day of FREE healthcare. I met a great group of nurses doctors dentists dental assistants and just plain Joes. Every one was VERY friendly. It was a great experience. The church will host the FREE clinic every month. I was so excited to hear this. People may whine and cry that there are no good people out there. They may say doctors and dentists stay home and count their money!!!! SO NOT TRUE!!!!! There are many wonderful people out there giving their time to those less advantaged. Just take some time and look for the good out there!!! I'll be back. read more

Good worship. Good teachings. Too bad their email is broken. They don't communicate very well and I'm not going to bother with another email unanswered. But overall if you want anonymity without commitment this is the perfect Post Modern Church. You don't need to even make eye contact with them and they won't ask you to head up a ministry you know nothing about. Tithing is optional and they serve wine with communion. read more

This is a great church and pastor Rick is awesome. Last Sundays music was unreal too. I could've sat there all day and listened to it. There's always a great message and something to take away. Church is a good reminder and a way to celebrate Jesus, but this church does it right. If you're looking for a Christian church in the area check this one out! read more

It's weird to "review" a church because preferences about churches and worship/service styles are such a personal and individualized thing. Imago Dei has moved from its high school location to what I presume is a permanent home on SE Ankeny. I never visited at the former high school location, but this church has been on my list of places to check out for some time. According to a plaque dedicated in 1976 outside the entry to the main worship area, the building used to be the Portland Foursquare Church. Parking is ample and very convenient to the main building. There are signs directing people to different areas for child care which appears to be available for little ones of all age groups. The pews are comfortable cushioned long benches, which I like better than the portable chairs a lot of churches use. There's also balcony seating. There is a lovely stained glass portrait of Jesus above the stage area. The building and interior seems very 70's, but it is aesthetically pleasing. This was my first visit so I just got a newcomer's feel for the place. I didn't talk to anybody while I was there and there was no greet your neighbor part during the service. They did have something immediately after the service geared towards new attendees, but I skipped it this time. It's the season of Advent, so the church is decorated for Christmas and all of the music was Christmas oriented. I thought the band was decent... definitely a more modern worship service, which I prefer. They played some of my favorite Christmas songs (with a modern/rock twist). One young woman played a really beautiful solo folky song on her guitar that she had written about the telling of the Christmas story. Communion is available to all on long tables set up at the front of the pews. A big target of their Advent donations will go to programs near Hanoi, Vietnam for providing support and education for women with HIV/AIDS (they showed a brief video about this). Overall, I had a pleasant experience at Imago Dei and would like to check it out a few more times before forming my final assessment :) read more

Imago dei is a wonderful church. Praise and Worship is ok and tends to get boring but it doesn't really matter. Pastor is great, speaks truth and not afraid to say things that most churches won't preach. He tells you how it is. I have to add that their children's ministry is great. I have never seen my daughter who used to be so afraid to go to school to just blast off to her classroom without saying bye to me! They have wonderful and charismatic teachers there. So patient, so joyous, and loving. I know because it shines through my child. I love this church very much, they are Also very involved in the community. You know how tithing is a way to put revonations at churches bedazzling them and all that stages cameras, etc. you don't have to wonder with this one because your tithing will be put into People who need them and not materialistic things. read more

Great church! I think the mark of a true Christian church is be forward with what your beliefs are and not being judgmental even if you have different views. We search and search for a place that was honest, accepting, and straight-forward. We love the kids classes for our little ones, and the small groups or "home groups" we've been a part of have been very genuine, honest, and accepting of a wide-variety of beliefs.
