Just writing this review of a recent experience in two WHSmith stores at Fiumicino…read more
Walked into the first store looking for a good book to read during my upcoming trip across the Atlantic, 8+ hours. Saw what looked like a great Stephen King novel and happily picked it up and took it to the register.
Was then told that there was a "special offer" for buying this book, and another book with a similar discount, for 9,90 euros total. I said "no thanks, I'll just take this book".
Cashier told me "Sorry but no, sir. You have to buy two books with this promotion, if you want this book".
Stared at her for a sec. "So you're telling me you literally cannot sell me this book by itself? I need to buy two separate products to get one, even if I do not want the other book in any way, shape or form?"
"Yep, basically."
I was laughing but also just amazed at how this was happening in the first place. Cashier sympathized and said she couldn't do anything about this whackjob policy.
Walked over to my gate. Sure enough, I came across ANOTHER WHSmith bookstore. Walked in, and they had the same book with the same "special offer" sticker on the front. I figured what the hell, why not give it a shot and see if I get lucky here?
Asked the cashier about the offer, and about whether I could just take the book by itself, even at full price / the price for BOTH books. This time, not only did I get turned down (note: turned down from buying a product on sale, at an open store. No, really.), but the cashier was even annoyed that I was asking the question at all.
"No, sir, that's the offer on the book. We are simply not allowed to sell you the book by itself". As if I was being unreasonable.
Just monumentally stupid. One of the most moronic business practices I have ever seen.
I'll do my book shopping elsewhere, thanks. Fiumicino airport is really coming along these days, they have excellent shops and food areas! Just not here, specifically.
