If you're in the northwestern region of Tuscany, near Lucca, treat yourself to a short drive north…read moreto Garfagnana. Lodged between the Apennine and Apuan Alps, you will pass the late 11th century Ponte della Maddalena (aka Ponte al Diavolo, or Devil's Bridge) which seems to tease gravity - and higher up, the little town anchored by the "Rocca Ariostesca (the fortress) whose name comes from a poet and province Governor. Once through the large portal gates of the Castelnuovo, you can wind your way along delightful cobblestone streets, shops and trattorias, until you discover a well-stocked "pizzicheria" (Italian delicatessen) and meet its proprietor, the ever cheerful, passionate and informative, Roberto, who will guide you through some of his prized delicacies. And if you're really nice, he may provide you a taste of a 36-month aged Parmesan, or his favorite "Il Borro" Tuscan prosciutto. The region is celebrated for its sweet chestnuts (Castenea Sativa), lentils, and Porcini mushrooms, as well as its Garfagnana breeds of goats and cattle. But in Roberto's shop, you could find some freshly curated truffles which also come from the region, owing to its warm climate and generous rainfalls. In addition, you will find local wines as well as imported luxury vintages such as La Tâche 2016, and a small batch French champagne by the name of "Salon" (Côtes des Blancs, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger). These labels are collectors items that will set you back quite a pretty penny. Poli Roberto is truly a gem of a provisions shop that must be visited while in the town.
