Typical chain restaurant quality, but a decent place overall. I come here if I'm looking to order a hearty breakfast with no fuss. IHOP offers just that - a menu with the basics, and food that I can trust will fill me up. The restaurant is located in a neat mid century building on the outskirts of downtown SB. There is limited parking, but I'm typically able to find a spot on the street if I'm driving. It's a mere 5 blocks from my house so I can certainly get in a nice walk to and from. Service is so-so, though I'd say it's in tune with other chain establishments. There are moments where the waiter may be very attentive, and others where I feel I've been forgotten about. I know that this is an IHOP, and not a five star locale, so I'm not complaining. The coffee and food are always good. Nothing to write home about, but fresh, flavorful, and filling. What more could you want from a greasy spoon? All in all, not a bad choice for breakfast. There are other similar places around town, but I'd give this place another go. read more

Dottie and I stopped at one of our favorite restaurants on our way home form The Eye MD. Francisco welcomed us a nd showed us to our regular table. We ordered our usual drinks water, light ice, lemon twist, and NO straw; and Lemonade, light ice, Straw Please. Dottie ordered the 55 Swiss and turkey sandwich with fries and Chicken noodle soup. Plenty of turkey and cheese on the sandwich; soup was great and plenty as usual. Took half of the sandwich home for lunch tomorrow. I ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich with onions rings and a salad. Salad was plenty and served with adequate quantities of Bleu Cheese dressing. The Sandwich overflowed with steak, onions and melted cheese. Took two thirds took for lunch tomorrow. Love stopping here makes the day better. Thanks to Chris' management style. read more

We go out to eat once a week and it's always the same thing servers that just want to get tables and hurry up to take ur order instead of being patient and taking time ... Years ago this location used to be Frimple's and my niece and i would come here for the gigantic cinnamon rolls with the buttery, vanilla infused frosting and we would bond. She would talk to me about her life in grammar school and then middle school and generally we would shoot the shit for hours. Our experiences were more about chatting and sharing. I recall those Saturday mornings very fondly: consuming large amounts of coffee (me) and cokes (her) and generally having a grand ole time. Well now my Niece is all grown up and has her own babies and they were intent (which 6 and 4 year olds are wont to be) to check out the Free Pancakes that IHOP had been advertising all over the TV for the last few days. And today was that day. As i am thinking back: to these little guys everything is free, right? Their lives are a plethora of free food, clothes, toys. And that is how it should be until the huge clock in the dome of the world strikes 18 years old and then they will have to shell out the doubloons for their pleasures and more to the point...for mine! Today was a day of firsts: my first visit in over 20 years to this location since it changed to an IHOP, the first time i had my grand niece and nephew alone on an outing. But i was ready both physically and mentally prepared. Upon entering IHOP i noted that the place was very clean, the rugs and upholstery very well maintained as were the bathrooms. (kids have to go frequently and what to do with the girl in a men's room?). We all went to the men's room and my little niece wanted to use the urinal like her brother. (for a second, i actually thought about how i could accommodate her on that one.) So i had one at the urinal and one in the stall and me as the guard. (remember when we could send kids to the bathroom alone?)In any event it worked out. No one was hurt. All three of us sat down and the kids almost immediately began to ask for the free pancakes as soon as the waitress came to our table. If there is one place in the world in which children are not only tolerated but welcome, it is IHOP. The waitress was patient, nice and personable. They ordered pancakes, i ordered a Cheese and Spinach omelet but somehow i ended up eating pancakes and they the omelet (though i had to tell the girl that the spinach was actually kale. she likes kale!). Cokes, Apple juice, coffee, bananas, water, rye toast. Everything was carefully prepared, tasty and served with a smile. As a special note: the pancakes were light, fluffy and buttery hardly needing any extra butter or syrup. IHOP: please get real syrup not maple flavored sugared water! Ultimately, i survived, the kids survived. We all had a good time. We will be back. read more

Never think of 5 Stars and a breakfast chain restaurant, however the Customer Service there is unsurpassed. It's an IHOP - not known for the ambiance or amazing cuisine, to be sure, but The Manager (guess that's his title?) is always there to greet with a smile and check in with customers during the meal. And when you have leadership like that it filters down. I eat at many places around Santa Barbara. Wish the IHOP on State Street manager could train some managers at other restaurants around here! The service was horrible. It took 45 minutes for them to take our orders. Then another 30 to 40 minutes for our food to arrive. The waiter catered to all the tables around us but didn't check on us until we spoke to the manager. Staff training is definitely needed. read more

We ate there today for lunch and I ordered the turkey sandwich with onion rings. The sandwich seemed to have giblets in it and I did not expect this. I don't eat guts or animal organs and the smell is disgusting to me so I asked our waiter for a change and I ordered the quesadias instead. The onion rings were so greasy that they tasted like they were dipped in motor oil. Yuck. Anyway, the quesadias (sp?) arrived and they were very bland and really were NOT tasty at all. My wife tasted it and this is her opinion too, tasteless. My Wife had the tilapia dinner and she gives it a "C". She mentioned that the spinach was a small leaf hidden under the fish. Went there Sunday Night, Oct 15th -- I ordered pancakes and my wife ordered crepes. Our waiter was pleasant and attentive, however my wife's crepes had to be returned twice -- and my hash browns were overcooked and my wife's hash browns were under-cooked - how this was possible when we were both served at the same time is a mystery. Many reviewers for this particular IHOP seem to arrive at its doors expecting some kind of culinary masterpiece. This should not, however, be what anyone expects. What we want from IHOP is the comfortingly familiar platters of salty breakfast food covered in ketchup, ideally late at night or on a lazy Sunday afternoon. When I ate here this past weekend, I was at first dismayed by their (clearly recent) price increase's discrepancy with my buy 1 breakfast get one free coupon's $8 maximum, combined with the exceptionally long wait to be served once we seated. But then Francisco came along. Never has a server saved the day more sweetly and effortlessly than this man. Maybe our expectations were low -- but we enjoyed this place and found nothing negative to complain about. We were looking for a quick hot breakfast at a good price & found it. Pancakes, eggs & sausage were what you'd usually expect. Tasted fine to me & the low price made me very happy. My friends had omelets & were happy with the portions & taste. I went there this past Saturday morning for breakfast and there was hair in my food. When pointed out to the manager, he looked at it, poked it with the fork, and then flatly said, "okay, anything else?"!!! Anything else? Um yes, apologize for the fact that there is hair in my food. Went in today, wanting a nice large breakfast... the service was great - the waiter was nice, even tho i gave him no eye contact since i had my sunglasses on... sat down near the kitchen..... Infact I ordered a fantastic pancakes with Nutella and an amazing milkshake with chocolate; so want to advice to all to go there for tasting those delicious. Came in on Tuesday August 6th, 2013 --- around 11 PM looking for a bite to eat and was immediately sat. We ordered a cup of coffee and absolutely loved that they served it in a personal carafe so your not waiting for a refill; the Splashberry Refresher which was quite refreshing and the Rooty Jr. (even though we were over 12) which was spot on --- as it was not an overwhelming amount of food compared to the traditional gigantic portions served by IHOP. I came here today to get pancakes and they didn't disappoint. I got the tall stack (5) pancakes and a side if ham. I love that they leave u a lot of coffee and the syrup is left on the table. I don't want to have to flag someone down for another cup of coffee or feel judged by asking for more of the little cups of syrup. 9 times out of 10 I get a breakfast with a side of cakes but today I 86ed the meal and dove straight into a fluffy stack of perfect pancakes. On a side note why can I NEVER make pancakes that look like theses? I should have realized it was IHOP but when I saw they had gluten free (GF) pancakes I got excited because sometimes you gotta have pancakes. Decided to give them a new try. Save your time and money; they're pricey for a pile of starch. If other SB breakfast places can serve GF pancakes for the same price with a high quality, nutritious and tasty GF flour like Bob's Red Mill, for example, why does IHOP need to make such a ridiculous profit margin on what I shudder to think are the worst fillers and chemicals on the planet?
