I have been going to Ichiban for years and even though it's now under new ownership, it's still pretty good. It's somewhat pricey at dinner; lunch time is the best time to go. I love their sushi lunch specials. They come with a few pieces of nigiri sushi, a roll of your choice and a hand roll as well for about $9. It also comes with miso soup. The sushi tastes good, especially their tuna. Their spicy squid hot pot is also good. My mom used to get the Yakisoba. I think their serving sizes are large, and they are less expensive than uchi or musashino. I like the decor as well. read more

Ichiban is a fun little sushi restaurant on Burnet that has had more work done on it than Heidi Montag. The outside is starting to look a bit worn down again, but the inside is really cozy and decorated with nice dark wood all around. It's a nice touch that you have to cross a bridge over a koi pond to walk in through the front doors. There is a sushi bar with plenty of seats, a standard sitting area with lots of tables too. But what you'll really want to do is sit in one of the "booths" the hug the wall. It almost feels like you're sitting in a hot-tub (minus the water) with a table on top. You'll get a nice little straw mat to sit on and it actually is pretty comfy. They do have a decent Japanese menu with your standard types like teriyaki chicken and bento box style meals. But I always come here for the sushi so I'll only be reviewing that today. The fish is always nice and fresh and the cuts are generous. I've always had an issue with their rice though, it seems to always fall apart as I dip my nigiri in to the soy sauce. This only happens at Ichiban for some reason...not sure what it is, but it bugs me. The sushi roll selection is pretty varied and most of them are pretty creative. The "Playboy" roll is one that really stood out. Spicy tuna, shrimp, avocado and salmon... that combination all worked really well and I'd never had it before. Being a lover of all things spicy, I tried their "Spicy Susan" and that was pretty spot-on as well. It has spicy tuna and salmon... ~hot~ Make sure you get some of their house hot-sake, it's a great way to make you forget how much your tongue is burning. Ichiban is a fun little place that is not too expensive and is great for group dinners. The staff are always friendly and the ambiance is very welcoming. Not the best sushi in town by any means, but it's easy on the wallet and fun. read more

Mixed feelings tonight about our trip to Ichiban. We were seated immediately when we walked in. Waitress was prompt about taking and filling our beverage orders and taking our food order. But that is where things went terribly wrong. We ordered 7 items to be split among a family of 4. Now 2 of the "diners" are toddlers, so they don't eat much. Still, they need SOMETHING. Waitress appears with ONLY 1 roll, an order of 6 pieces of Sashimi and the Tuna appetizer (3 items). None of those things is appropriate to feed to toddlers right? So one would figure the waitress might at this point conclude that something is missing. And while we are relatively small individuals, clearly, this is not enough food for 2 adults and 2 children is it? As it was just the "sushi" stuff from our order, I figure the rest is coming... I start eating my sushi, eating it as slowly as possible, hoping that food will arrive for the rest of my family... I stop eating at the half way point and take my antsy daughter outside to look at fish. We come back in to see if the food has arrived, nothing, so we go back outside. We do this about 4 or 5 times. While I'm gone, a waiter (not ours) gets the idea something must be up and comes over to chat with my husband. He is informed that we are still waiting for half of our food, he goes and checks for us and brings the bad news that the order never went in. Finally our waitress re-appears and husband has a conversation about the whereabouts of the rest of the food, she informs him that it's cooking now and do we want it to go? !?!?!?! Uh, no, hungry NOW, do not want to wait until we drive home to eat it! I pipe up "can you bring the edamame so we can feed the kids at least?" (this is the second time we've asked for that particular item to be sped up) I mean really, it's edamame, that takes like 5 minutes to heat up, if that. Eventually his Teriyaki, salad and soup arrive, seemingly all at once, and we ask AGAIN for the edamame, which finally arrives shortly after. 2 items we ordered never arrived at all (tempura and a single-piece roll from my order). So 8 items ordered (including drinks), 4 arrive as ordered, 2 arrive MUCH MUCH MUCH later than the rest, 2 never appear at all. After the food arrives, we never see our waitress again. Savior waiter appears to ask if everything is alright, we ask for a take out box for hubby's leftovers and the bill. When the bill arrives and 1 of the missing items is on it, I complain that I want it taken off. I mean, that's fair, why should I pay for something you never made, much less served? At this point we finally get a genuine apology from both the second server and the chef. They remove the item we didn't receive, deduct 15% from the bill and bring a complimentary dessert. They did what they could to make it right, but it felt a bit "too little too late". I shouldn't have had to complain about them charging for an item I wasn't served before they offered to "fix" the evening's problems. I get the impression that if the bill had been correct, they wouldn't have offered us anything at all for our trouble, and that is pretty unacceptable to me. The food we ate was really yummy. But it really puts a damper on the experience when only 1 person at the table has anything to eat, especially when 2 of the other people are toddlers. It's hard enough to keep children engaged and well behaved WITH food, but trying to do that without, especially when they can see there is food on the table that isn't for them, is nearly impossible. I don't know where the failure in the system was, whether it was the server not getting the order to the kitchen, or the kitchen failing to fulfill it. I DO know that our waitress failed to check up on us, and failed to make sure we were taken care of, and that it really wasn't that busy, so I hope that the second waiter gets the tip we left. We'll probably be back, because at the end of the day, I do like the food, and I've been there dozens of times before. But it makes me reluctant to bring guests with me. Hubby and I are pretty good at rolling with the punches, but I've got relatives and friends that are decidedly poor at handling these sorts of things. read more

Still really, really good sushi. My qualm is that they're super slow..liiiike we probably talked to our waitress 3 times. Once to order drinks, the second time to order our food and then the third time after my husband had to try THREE times to flag her down to ask for the check. She didn't bring our drinks, food or check. It took us close to an hour to finish 3 rolls because she was so slow and not paying attention. The sushi chefs scolded her a few different times to "get with it" and grab the food that was ready. I think we may start sitting strictly at the bar. read more

I used to go to this joint in college and remembered it being good and affordable. So, I gave it a try the other night on a whim instead of going to one of my usual reliable sushi bars. I regret that decision greatly. The service I received was absolutely abysmal, which seems to be a trend in this place according to the other reviews. In my case, I ordered several items (sushi, hand rolls, soup, drink), received some (sushi, hand roll (note no drink and no water provided), and enjoyed none (sushi tasted aged to imperfection). My daughter and I each had a bento box. The beef bulgogi was just okay. I have tasted better. The service was AWFUL. The older Asian lady was not nice at all. My 12 year old said that she is only nice to white people. We are part Asian and very disappointed with the service. The younger girl helping out was more helpful. No one asked us how our food was and we didn't get refills for water and hot tea. The older lady passed by with the pitcher of water and didn't refill our glass. We had to ask the younger girl for refills. We find that RYU of Japan in Burnet is much better and Osaka Mansun so we might not go back here. read more

I would eat here every other day if I got the chance. Everything tastes so fresh and the staff is super nice; they always say hello and good buy at the door. Not to mention if you're a regular they treat you to something nice every once in a while. The sushi is plated artfully and I love the atmostphere. Man this place is amazing! I have yet to visit uchiko or uchi, but if you are looking for good sushi look no farther. It's decently priced and the quality is so good. Depending on what time of day the service can be great or underwhelming. The last five or so times I have gone the service has been on point even when it was busy! So I am assuming they made some staffing adjustments! Appetizers: I usually get a miso soup and my girlfriend orders edamame and seaweed salad and we split it. Now beware because we always get appetizers and its usually a 50/50 chance they will either 1. Get served with your meal or 2. You don't get them at all. The last few times they have come out in a timely manner and before the meal, but you just never know. Usually if they have not come out though before our rolls we just ask for them to remove them from the bill which they will gladly do. The soup is your typical miso nothing so wonderful you can't experience anywhere else. The seaweed salad is great though and one serving can easily feed two people. Nigiri: The salmon (sake) is always fresh and yummy. The scallop is also very good and taste fresh. Last week we tried the uni and oh my stars, I will be ordering that again. I had been wanting to try it, and the velvety texture was amazing and it just melted in your mouth. I would highly suggest trying it here, if it has been on one of you must try lists. Cooked Sushi Rolls: I have had so many rolls here and never been disappointed. Whether you are looking for a cooked roll or raw roll there is something for everyone. From the most experience and adventurous sushi lover to the simple cooked rolls everyone will leave happy and full. If I am looking for a cooked roll I usually hit up the Volcano or the Oh! Crab! roll. The volcano is not your traditional volcano roll with everything baked on top, but I actually prefer their style compared to others. It's easier to eat and is fantastic with a crunch, yet creamy spicy center. The Oh! Crab! roll is amazing and is perfect for those looking for a non raw option. With a crab mixture and then lightly fried to perfection, having a crunch that melts in your mouth. Raw Sushi Rolls: If you LOVE escolar you cannot pass up the White Blanco roll. It is easily the best sushi roll I have had and I crave it on a weekly basis. Inside you are greeted with raw fresh salmon that melts in your mouth, with crab meat and avocado. Then the roll is topped with a fresh piece of escolar and roasted garlic. The roasted garlic gives the roll a slight crunch that perfectly adds that extra element to the raw fish. The sunshine roll is perfect if you are not wanting a huge roll that will break the bank or your belly. However even with it being a smaller roll you are getting a huge bang for your buck! Packed with four different fish and avocado, it's the perfect roll refresh you during a hot Texas day. The best way to end your visit to Ichiban though would be the Happy Ending roll. If you are looking for fresh and refreshing with a bit of spice you have found it. The inside of the roll is eel, cream cheese, and avocado. If you are an eel lover this roll is for you, but the best part is on top you are greeted with fresh raw salmon with a fresh jalapeno and just a dot of spicy mayo. The the spice of the jalapeno and coolness of the cream cheese, gives the perfect combo for a happy ending for all. I highly suggest ordering this! Also don't forget to bring an extra dollar to grab some fish food to feed the fish outside in their pond! Perfect way to finish your visit at Ichiban! read more

We visit Ichiban often, since it is right up the road from us. This lunch today was the very best I have ever had! We, 4 of us, ordered the Bento Shrimp and Veggies; the Tempura was a perfectly laced batter, fried to a wonderfully tasty crispness. The miso soup was its usual healing broth, which I adore and the salad had exceptional ginger dressing! Another friend ordered the Shrimp Bento and loved it as well! I have driven by this place for years while driving up and down Burnet Rd. I would have kept passing by if one of my customers hadn't referred me there. I went on a Thursday at 3 pm so there was only one other table seated while I was there. I enjoyed the food that I had but was really disturbed to see the waiter blowing his nose and not washing his hands. I was thinking I should mention it to the Chef but decided that I wouldn't. Then, I observed the chef touch his own nose and wipe his hands on his apron. It is really too bad that the health risk is worse from the staff than the risk of eating raw food. read more

My go to place. Always great food. My friends and family love coming to Ichiban! I wish they had loyalty rewards, that's seriously how often we go! Meh! It was ok. We went for my dad's birthday and I was not impressed. We had several appetizers and some sushi but it was all just average at best. Nothing really stood out. The Koi outside seemed like the were starving too - they sell patrons the food and it doesn't seem like they feed them much otherwise. I don't think I will going back anytime soon. read more

We went here because it had good reviews and yelp you lead us astray! We were really disappointed! This what we had shrimp and veggie tempura- very greasy, no flavor, shrimp was soggy in the middle, and the tempura was also soggy. Couldn't finish any of the pieces. Bim Bim Bap- edible? lots of rice, all other ingredients pretty bland. The Bim Bim Bap up the road at Korea House it way better. It comes with lots of little dishes with different flavors. This one just had beef, carrots, bean sprouts, spinach, seaweed all very much lacking flavor. The egg was over cooked and greasy. It came with a Miso soup- which we had two bites of before pushing aside. (I usually will slurp miso soup down! ) The bigfoot roll- a sushi roll, was actually a lot better. It had flavor but a very uniform flavor and it was the only thing we finished, so maybe just stick with sushi if you get dragged here by your friends. But at no point did we say " mmm or yum" textures were not very good we were just trying to stay positive at this point. The atmosphere had a lot going for it, But everything looked weirdly cleaned the lamps were very dusty, the tables were greasy/ streaky, and the floors were perfect (you do take off your shoes) The service was quick and friendly. We both got stomach aches too, which at fifty dollars for the whole meal really drove the regret home. We don't get a chance to eat out much these days and it was very sad and frustrating to spend that much money and be so disappointed. We should of just ordered an appetizer and drinks, taken three bites and walked out with a 20 tab. ( which maybe a good rule of thumb for trying a totally new place) This place is really kitchen nightmares worthy because with the set up they have it could be a really awesome place. The winner has to be Ichiban. Everytime I eat here I get free Miso soup. On occasion I get a nice sweet warm gingery after tea. Their food is SPICY.... yes! At one point they had a sushi happy hour with half off sushi from 5-7.. it was freaking great while it lasted. Don't know if they still do that. But their sushi has never disappointed me and I will actually eat the raw fish here. I think I'm way too sensitive to the un-freshness of sea life you can tell this stuff is not that old. The Disclaimer is this is also a place with the other half of their menu Japanese fare which is also very, very good. My most frequent reason to eat here is the Pork Bulgolgi.. this stuff burns with flavor literally. .. I end up eating their seafood pancake quite a bit as well which is pretty tasty. I also am in love with their Green Tea Ice Cream too. I've only had shoddy service here one, every other time i've had great servers. The atmosphere is also very nice. You can request to sit in the booth and enjoy taking off your shoes and sit on the floor. although hypothetically you can change your mind( It's just like a really low fancy picnic table). You can also feed a mass of Koi outside for a buck of a big portion of vittles the kid in me loves to feed fish. This place is also a good place to lose yourself in food because you won't see any of the outside world. Taste wins here. read more
