I tried to order similar rolls to what I usually get at good sushi places so I can compare size, texture and flavor. I thought the seaweed salad I ordered tasted a bit *off* and was overpriced. The other rolls were good, but a bit small compared to other sushi I've had. The prices were ok since we were there during sushi happy hour. What is it with wait staff wearing Adidas slides for footwear? That really put me off the place, moreso than anything else did. They have really pared down their menu since the last time I was here, over three years ago. On the other hand, the service was much, much better. The reason we hadn't been in so long was because the server was so rude that we vowed not to return. The kids had sushi, one of them insisting on toro (sigh), and they loved it. I opted for squid bi-bim-bap in a stone bowl, and it was perfect. The wife had a spicy pork bulgogi bento lunch that was gigantic, with lots of tempura. Happy hour prices are pretty good. I want to start this review off by saying the customer service recieved was beyond remarkable, this gracious single star is only due to the fact that our waitress was very much deserving 6 out of 5. HOWEVER, Managment made our visit a very much unenjoyable experience for a mothers day dinner. We sat down, ordered, and 2 of our 3 meals ordered had come out. The waitress had checked in and made sure everything was going okay multiple times... 45 minutes pass and still the 3rd dish (the euphoria roll) had not made its appearance to the tablie. Our waitress then goes to the the sushi chef and complains about the wait we've experienced, then comes back to the table explaining how they had fell behind schedule due to the kitchen getting busy with call in/carry out orders and they chose to push those orders through BEFORE the dine ins. As a customer we understand that at times it's inevitable to have a busy kitchen, I myself work in the service industry and know how difficult that can be. The disturbance of the matter is that the waitress had brought this inconvenience up to managements attention and tried to get this dish off of our ticket since it took over an hour for 6 pieces of shushi.... but when she finally came back with our bill, managment had denied her request and gave us only $5off, not even half off for OVER an hours time worth of a wait. The waitress apologized that she couldn't get the whole item removed and offered to pay for the remaining balance of my meal out of HER OWN pocket to make up for the inconvenience.... This not only shows how disrespectful management is, but also shows how they don't value the time of their customers AND how greedy of a company they are not to take care of dine in customers as priority and would allow an employee to salvage their own paycheck to save the name of the company. read more

I am vegan. Ordered fried rice from here and I asked for no egg. It was fine however I couldn't eat it because it smelled like it was cooked same pan or surface as MEAT. It smelled too bad from meat smell I had to throw it away. I wish restaurants use different utensils for vegan orders. Also the veg tempura dipping sauce smelled very meaty for some reason. Surprising amazing. From street view it doesn't look like much, but as we walked up or shall I say over the bridge with giant goldfish we realized dang this place is alright. Great food. Some of the people are amazing and always go out of the way to help you. The biggest downside is the wait.... My last two visits I have had to go to the bar and ask for a water pitcher as we could not get refills. Appetizers coming out after the sushi, after asking where they are. Also after ordering sushi expect a 45 minute wait at a minimum to get your food. I really hope they get these bugs worked out as we still go and try and support the company. read more

I went here for my 27th birthday. Admittedly, I love everything Japanese and I try to go out of my way to find places that can give me that experience. A magazine listed this place as one of the top places in Austin, Texas where you can find Japan in Austin. I am glad I did. Everything about the place was amazing. The food, the staff, the atmosphere, everything. In my town, there is a difference between OK Japanese restaurants and great Japanese restaurants. This is a great lunch spot. The menu is standard Japanese and a little Korean; there are boxes, sushi plates, sashimi plates and then for the non-sushi eaters there are options like katsu and teriyaki. We had the yaki soba and the sashimi, both were good although the yaki soba was lacking on the beef. The inside looks very traditional and if I had been with more people it would have been fun to sit in the booths with the low tables. The prices are reasonable anywhere from 7 to 15 bucks for lunch. If you are on Burnet craving some Japanese this is a good option. read more

I really like this establishment! Before entering there is a koi fish pond. You can sit at a table or in a traditional booth (take off shoes and sit on the "floor") Very quiet atmosphere! The server was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu. The sashimi was very fresh and bigger portions than normal. Our sushi order came out on a boat which was cool! We tried the spicy tuna crunch, scallop roll, and 2 specialty rolls. All were very good! We finished with green tea ice cream, which is always light and refreshing! It took us over 5 minutes to be greeted, ordered a salad I never got and there were only 2 servers covering the whole floor. Needless to say, they were busy. The rolls we got (Bling Bling, Super Philadelphia, Mexican Orgasm) were all about $15. The portions of each were good and the ingredients fresh, i just thought they were more $11-$13 kind of rolls than $14-$16. I came here with my roommate for a Friday night dinner. We would probably not come back here again since the sushi was mediocre. We ordered two rolls: Double Ebi and PlayBoy. The portions were very generous, but the fish did not taste fresh. Additionally, both rolls were covered in a sweet sauce that made them taste the same. I had a great experience here. The service is friendly and attentive. The sushi was really good. My friends and I shared the six different rolls and some nigiri. The fish was fresh, presentation was beautiful, and everything tasted delicious. I highly recommend the Freescale roll and the Yokohuna, they were AMAZING. We were with some children so we had an order of chicken fried rice for those young pre-sushi ready palates and it was also very well done. My parents owned a Chinese restaurant growing up so I am pretty much a snob when it comes to fried rice and this stuff was good. I wish they served cocktails, but we got by on our beer and wine. I think in the area of Brentview, Allandale, Crestview, this is the best sushi I have had. I haven't tried all the places in the area but I can say from experience that Ichiban's sushi is better than Korea House, Sushi Kyu, Suzi's north, and Korea Garden. This will be my go to spot when I don't feel like driving up to Tomo, which is more expensive anyways. One made this place earn that fifth star is the ambiance. It is well decorated and the music was eclectic in a poppy Western sense. Waitresses could be heard singing along to Spice Girls "Wannabe" and then we would move on to some Mary J. Blige. We appreciated the wide variety of rolls. They were very different from the standard rolls offered at other sushi restaurants. We got the Lovey Dovey and Mexican Orgasm rolls. Soup was satisfying (nice addition for just $1), you can pass on the house salad though.. And when the rolls came out -- well, they were beautiful. I must have been suffering through sloppy sushi for too long, because these were just right. Beautifully plated, properly rolled, no weird 'end' pieces.. Most of the happy hour rolls are $5, and unlike some other places, I felt like I was getting the same sushi someone paying full price would get. Very satisfying! These items came with miso soup and their house salad with tangy ginger dressing! The bento box lunch has variety of side dishes to keep your meal interesting. We had the Grilled salmon with teriyaki sauce, which came with rice, 5pcs tempura, 2 pcs gyoza, and 6 pcs of California roll! We also tried Red Sashimi BiBimBap. Assorted sashimi and fresh vegetables over rice with Korean kochujang pepper sauce on the side. I love this dish, as it's a sushi chiarshi bowl but with a spicy Korean twist! Yum!! From the moment I laid eyes on it's neon temple and koi pond, I knew Ichiban and I were destined for love. I love the option for traditional Japanese seating! I have had consistently great service here, from all different employees. I love their fish, their tempura and terriyaki boxes and their specialty sushi rolls. I have been to this restaurant twice. I don't remember much about the first time except that it was the first time I'd ever taken my shoes off at a restaurant. The food was good and the pot of sake seemed bottomless. Recently I came here with my girlfriend for happy hour. This is my husband and I's favorite sushi spot in Austin. It feels authentic because of the atmosphere and quality of the food. You're actually able to sit on the floor without shoes on like a traditional setting in Japan. The happy hour menu is where you can get the best bang for your buck. Our favorite rolls on the happy hour menu are the fried Oh Crab roll and the Crunchy roll. Off happy hour menu, the Playgirl and Playboy are both delicious. We also ordered fried rice with our meal. The fried rice tasted like it had been cooked in oil after fish had been fried in it. im not sure how long #ichiban austin has been in business, but it's been a long time. certainly before sushi was trendy. i've lived in austin for 54yrs. i never tried ichiban. my son told me i really should stop in. so i did. just this month, i've eaten there 7 times! each time, i sit at the sushi bar. i'm greeted with kindness every time. i'm a huge fan of hamachi, so that's what i order....every time. the chefs are professional, LEGIT. the real deal. to entice me from my safe, go-to yellowtail, they'll sometimes offer up a small taster of different food options, at no cost. each time, my horizons grow. i trust their judgement. i will eat whatever i'm given. i have blind faith, now. very reasonably priced, clean, fresh, TASTY and friendly. like comin home. perfect combination for a dining experience. the koi pond is beautiful. don't forget to feed the koi! grab some koi food on the way out. thanks ichiban. wish i'd tried you 20yrs ago! read more
