The Good: The food was great, fish tasted fresh, and service was friendly. We had the Volcano roll & the Sushi Combination Plate. Both dishes were full of flavor and fresh. The Bad: The Volcano roll was about $15. For what it was I thought that was a little pricy. BUT the Sushi Combination special was only $12 and that provided lots of options. I'm happy to see a large number of positive reviews for Ichiban. I really want to like this place, and I look forward to giving it another chance in the future. I brought my mom here for her birthday dinner this evening, though, and the service was inexplicably slow.. After taking our order, our waitress paced out her visits to our table by ever-increasing time intervals. Took our order quickly - great. Came back a couple minutes later with our drinks, and another gentleman quickly brought our food out - perfect. Waitress appeared again ten minutes later to see if we needed anything - alright. Waitress disappeared for ~thirty minutes (I actually started to wonder whether she'd left for the night), and - eventually - meekly reappeared to ask if we needed anything else. I'm not a needy customer, and I don't ask for much. If I have to wait around just to receive my check (when it's clear no one has touched their food in a good while), I start to question whether I am just being ignored by inattentive waitstaff. The place was not busy, by the way. .......... On a more positive note: the udon bowl I ordered was tasty. It wasn't too oily, and the broth was pleasant. I tried tempura veggies, and they were also quite good. In terms of atmosphere, I like the lighting, the booths, and the acoustics. Not a noisy restaurant at all. read more

We went for a lunch before embarking on our three hour ride back home. I liked Ichiban, but four stars because it could be a little better. We ordered bulgogi, the one roll combo with spider roll(+3), Red devil, and Sun Rice. Staff was attentive and very nice- the customers there were there seem to be repeat customers. Always a good sign! The bulgogi needs to be cut a little bit. The pieces were pretty long-easy to pull apart with another pair of chopsticks but who wants to work for their food? The combo house and spider roll were alright. I thought it they had added a little too much sauce though. Went in for some late afternoon sushi and it was great. Miso soup was delish, gyoza was hot and crispy, and the sushi was superb. I had the salmon sashimi and a Happy Ending roll. Everyone is so nice (I've come here once before and the chef was giving us sample after sample as we waited for our takeout food) and my order was ready almost immediately. Came here on a few occasions, and every time, their service has been exceptional. The trick is definitely to come during Happy Hour. A lot of the appetizers and rolls are much cheaper, which helps your wallet. Some appetizers I would suggest are the edamame and the calamari. Their miso soup is also only a dollar during HH, which is a good deal for sure. I also really enjoyed the salad - it has this garlic dressing, which was so good (even though I am not usually a fan of garlic). Their hot sake is also much discounted, with a pot for $12 - this is definitely about 8 or so shots of sake. Their rolls are really good. Of course the HH basic rolls are good, like their California B and the Salmon Avocado roll. My friend and I tried one of their special rolls to be a little more adventurous, the Dynamite roll, and it was actually super delicious. It is more pricey but there was so much seafood topping the roll itself on top of what was already in the roll. And whatever sauce was on top of it was amazing. It's good for a date, it's good for a big group. Definitely a good meal. read more

They serve Korean food and sushi, and you have the choice of sitting at a booth (requiring you to remove your shoes and be seated on pillows) or at a table. We chose a booth and it was quite comfortable. We started off with calamari and some sushi rolls. The sushi I tried was okay. I don't remember which ones we got. Keep in mind that if you order sushi that is cooked, it's not going to be cold as you normally expect sushi to be. The calamari was good. My friends who ordered katsu were blown away at how much food they were given. Literally, it's around two pretty decent sized meals in one order. And, it was delicious. I had the pork bulgogi and it was good and spicy how it should be. It comes with several Korean side dishes as well. I was truly impressed at the quality of food -- some of the best Korean food in Austin for sure. I'd come back for more of their Korean dishes, but probably would go elsewhere for sushi. read more

Have been returning to Ichiban since they opened. At first they didn't have there liquor license so they gave you the Sake for free. Those were great visits, but I digress. I've never had a bad item at Ichiban. One of my favorite is the Agedashi, deep fried tofu with ginger or the grilled baby octopus, always a good start to your meal. I usually get the Sushi & Sashimi Regular. It's a good option for the price and the selection is always good. Or if I'm in the mood I order rolls. I want to come back and try this place for sushi, because it seems most of the positive reviews focus on that menu. I came here on Saturday around 6:30 with my family. It wasn't super busy, but you would never know that from how long the service took. Long wait times after being sat (we were sat in a regular table, not the family style seating) and between orders. The gyoza were delicious. The house salad was tiny but good. I have no opinion on the california roll my husband ordered as I like sashimi. We had two orders of beef bulgogi to share between 4 people. At Korea House, this would easily feed all 4 of us. At Ichiban, you pay 2$ more to serve only one person. They try to trick you by laying the meat on a bed of onions, to make it appear more full. The onions are filler, and aren't even sauteed in the sauce. The ambiance was very nice, and feeding the koi in the pond was fun. I will give this place one more shot but right now I am feeling that I am not getting quality for the price. read more

This was our favorite sushi place. We drove all the way from basically Georgetown to eat here all the time. Well now that is under new management, that has changed. We ordered our food tonight and the sushi was out within 3 minutes, which was nice it was out so fast, but super out of the norm. One of our rolls was burnt and the other two just tasted weird. The didn't taste fresh and had a strange after taste. They came out so fast my husband thought they were premade. Sushi from H-E-B tastes better than what we ate tonight. We also ordered kid's yakitori, which for the price should include rice or something else. It was literally two pieces of overcooked chicken, covered in sauce on screwers. For an appetizer we ordered calamari, which came out after the sushi and was so hard and chewy that it was barely edible. Some pieces weren't edible. Our waitress was nice, but not attentive. We ordered two lemonades, she only brought us one and we had to have our daughter track her down to get another. We also asked for 2 spicy mayos and had to re-ask her when she forgot and in the end she only brought one. Seriously the only enjoyable part of our dinner was the edamame. The bathrooms have never been great, but this time they were filthy. When is just another slap in the face, after an awful dinner. As much as we used to love this place, I will never go back. This is my go-to sushi place in Austin. They have an adorable koi fish pond you walk over when you first get there. They've even got koi food inside to give them! The sushi is fresh and delicious. Definitely try the lobster special roll. omg every sushi place needs to have this roll. It's insanely good. Had it once, never stopped thinking about it. So tasty. I bring a lot of friends from out of town here. They have these booths where you sit on the floor on top of a floor pillow. It just adds such a whole new layer to the atmosphere. I had a intimate BFF Girls date here, and we vowed we'd go every time she was in town. It's our spot now. The staff is really friendly. I brought my mom who was visiting from NY and she asked our server a thousand embarrassing questions. Our server Jennifer was super nice about it and didn't seem to be bothered at all. I actually asked her to take a picture of my mom and I and she happily took one. She even showed them to me and asked if it came out okay. Ichiban, you're great. I actually had to Google " how much sushi can you eat in a week" As i simply can't get enough. We used to sit at the sushi bar what time is the whole cover thing we just take our food home. Mexican orgasm is my absolute favorite. The calamari is delicious but by the time it says in the little bag can you get it home it's not crunchy but if you can eat it in the restaurant it's amazing. Right when I walked in, I should have picked up the hint when they have a certain group of customers. I should have known that it won't be authentic. The chicken katsu was dry and blend. The miso soup tasted ok, does not have the usual umami flavor but not bad. The fish tempura was also very dry with this weird sauce all over it. The waitress never asked if we need more water or not, when majority of the food were dry. There are plenty of other sushi places that's better than this. Will not be coming back. read more

I loveee Ichiban! I've been going here for a few years and just had lunch there this afternoon. Their lunch specials are pretty good- I usually get the ton katsu and it is always delicious! It is a huge portion (especially the dinner size, if I remember correctly). It is lightly breaded, crispy fried pork with a tangy/sweet sauce, white rice, daikon pickles and slaw. It comes with a salad with their tasty orange dressing that has a crushed texture. It's hard to describe perfectly, but it's bright, zesty, and I desperately wish I knew how to make it. The dish also comes with miso soup. Their sushi is also pretty good and around 5 dollars or so during the lunch special time. The service also deserves a nod. I've never had a bad waiter/waitress here- ever. I do try to come at slow times as I do everywhere I go, but it just always seems like their wait staff is extremely attentive and respectful to the dining experience! I also like that you can see the sushi chefs making sushi right there in front of you, facing the main dining room. This place is just comforting to me- and is always delicious! read more

Originally from Austin, but moved to Houston. Every time I'm back home to visit family I always go to Ichiban. I love to take my friends here as well! I have known the head sushi chef for years. He is such a kind and thoughtful man. He takes very good care of our table every single time we come in. I couldn't recommend this place enough! I usually get sushi rolls and katsu. I can usually save half the katsu for another meal. It's a pretty large portion size. I recently tried to udon and it was quite tasty! They do get VERY busy at peak times. However it makes me happy because then i know one of my favorite spots is well loved! Worth it! I also love how for a $1 you can toss some food to the koi fish. Fun little activity. read more

Solid 4 star experience. The rolls were tasty, grilled octopus were good too. They have a nice selection of Japanese beers and traditional shoes-off booth seating. The music is not loud and you can have a conversation. The cons: the menu is a little confusing. Some items on the menu with pictures were outdated. They also ran out of octopus dumplings when we visited, that was a bummer. The pros: Service was fast and friendly. There was no wait on Saturday evening at around 8 PM The interior was ok. A little too Americanized to my taste, but pleasant. Definitely good for a laid back night out or get together with some friends or co-workers. read more
