First, I want to acknowledge that I understand patients are the top priority, especially in a behavioral health setting, and I fully respect that. My concern is not about prioritizing patients, but about the lack of basic respect and communication toward families during serious situations. From the moment we arrived, her attitude was dismissive and unprofessional. My family members do not speak English, and when we asked for a translator, she denied us that basic accommodation. This made it extremely difficult to understand what was happening and advocate for my mother. her denial of a translator--despite knowing my family does not speak English--felt, at the very least, insensitive and potentially influenced by bias. She also repeatedly rolled her eyes and scoffed while listening to me and my family discuss my mothers condition. It felt incredibly disrespectful and insensitive. While she eventually did allow us to speak to someone else, she acted as if even doing the bare minimum of her job was a burden. Her demeanor made it clear that she did not want to help beyond that point, and there was no effort to offer additional guidance or support. I do want to say that the nurses we spoke to afterward were very different--they were clear, professional, and kind in their communication. They treated us with respect and compassion. Unfortunately, this front desk experience left a lasting negative impression during a moment when empathy and basic human decency should have been the standard.
