I recently went to the top with my friend, and at the top there are MANY different hikes that you can start on. We only had a short time so we took a easy 15 minute walk on a easy path through the Wildkirchli Caves. In the caves prehistoric finds have been made and there is a little museum talking about the history of the caves housed in a old hermit dwelling. There were actual hermits that used to inhabit the caves as a place of worship from 1658-1853. At the top there is also a restaurant and guest house with 16 guestrooms. During the winter you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding. Definitely a must if you are in Appenzell and want to enjoy the local beauty. I want to go back when I have more time and can do so more extensive hiking!

There was no queue for the lift, and it was ready and waiting for us upon arrival one weekend afternoon. The ride was steady and smooth, giving us a gracefully view of the mountains and the valley below. It was fun watching the folks skiing become tiny as we traveled higher up the mountain. There were about 10 passengers in the cable car. We all rode comfortably together. There were seats, but most of us opted to stand to take in the view. Be sure to take out your camera, you'll get some great pictures! Ride time: 5 - 10 minutes.

It was the middle of the winter so the view was snowy and it was COLD up top! It was easy to buy tickets and we boarded the gondola easily. It did make some kind of scary creaking noises with the ice cracking and shifting, but we made it to the top and back! There were a few skiiers using the gondola to drop in at the top of the mountain Would be fun to see this all through the seasons.

The Gondola will take you to 2 stations, half way and the top of the mountain. If you get there early enough you could do both maybe I only had to to go straight up the mountain and walk both side up top. Amazing view of the mountains and mother nature's beauty. I can't hate on the Wankbahn…read more 1. Ok, it's childish - but "WankBahn" is a little funny if you're an English speaker. Even better is the bar at the top called the Wank Haus. 2. It's WAY cheaper than the Zupspitze ascent at €22 pp. The problem with going up the Zugspitze (besides the crazy cost) is that it takes a long time and of course, you can't see the Zugspitze when you're on it! 3. Burg Wank is about 1800m tall, so you get a tremendous view of Zugspitze and the whole local range. Plus if it's cloudy or crappy at higher altitude it my be just fine here. 4. Instead of a big cable car, you get a tiny 4 person car. It's terrifying!!!! But the views are worth it. 5. I think far fewer tourists go up this cable car, so it's likely to be much less crowded at peak times. Today, there were maybe 4-5 people at the peak total. It was my idea to ride a cable car, and I picked the WankBahn so we could see Zugspitze and save some Euros. I'm terrified of heights so imagine my face when we reached the station after a terrifying ascent...only to find that we were just halfway and the second half was WAY steeper. I almost schiesse'd my pants....but we made it safely and took some amazing photos. So, if you're in the area and are looking for something to do - check out the WankBahn!

The views are can…read morebe pretty from the cable car but I wouldn't obsess about taking pictures as the views from the top of the mountain are absolutely gorgeous, without having to worry about the dirty glass of the windows interfering with your pictures. I'm not afraid of heights but I was with a few people who were. For people who are afraid of heights, I will say that the ride is pretty smooth and short. I have definitely been on other cable cars that were a lot more shaky. It's more of a vertical assent at an angle so you're not going to see a lot of variation. Things are just going to get a lot smaller as you go up. The view from the top of the mountain is worth the trip. It is like stepping into a painting. Any photos you take with a high quality camera are going to look like postcards. There is a dining area on the second floor if you're so inclined. I was there in the middle of June and it was still a little chilly at that altitude so if you do get cold easily, I would bring a jacket. I really recommend checking this out if you're in the area.

The…read moreparking lot is a bit on the crowded side but as you ascend the peaks you forget about the town below. This gondola is two stage so there's a mid camp and a high camp. Obviously if you're paragliding you're going straight to the top. I was doing some hiking but rode up with the mostly paragliding crew. Spent a good half hour just taking in the view then making the trek throughout the valley hiking my way around
