The 4 star rating is not warranted, this is a 2 star hotel. The hotel has the best position in the town, set in a beautiful building with magnificent views of the river Tarn. The staff were helpful and the restaurant was adequate and not overpriced. The bed is comfortable. BUT The rooms (which are tiny) were last decorated in the 1960s to which some 1980s furniture and fittings have been added. A refurb of the bathrooms carried out in 2004 at minimal cost does nothing to improve the quality of comfort. Both rooms we viewed were in sore need of redecoration although everything functioned. The standard of accommodation is so poor that a Formula 1 hotel has more to offer than here. A room with a view is charged at €140 plus which is an absolute rip-off for the standard of accommodation which is not worth more than €80.00. There is simply no excuse for the abysmal standard of this hotel especially as it has such exceptional potential. Don't be fooled by the attractive setting of this hotel, do not stay here, go and have a drink on the terrace to enjoy the view and stay somewhere else!!

Perché sur les berges du Tarn, l'hôtel Mercure occupe une partie des murs des anciens Moulins d'Albi. La terrasse du restaurant ainsi que seize chambres donnent sur le fleuve et offrent ainsi une magnifique vue sur la ville et la cathédrale. I felt even with the modern everything it was a great room, two separate sleeping arrangements, so very easily a family or a large group could be hosted. The location being near the gare, is not as bad as it would sound, not as dangerous as this is southern France, and not a more larger metropolitan area. Think this was a good hotel for the money and it wasn't overly priced. However for seeing the centre of the city, is a bit of a hike even with good feet and shoes. Food wasn't included in the price but for the closeness to shops problem was easily remedied. I would easily go back here since it was rather comfortable and friendly for people who don't speak english. That's quite a lot to ask in southern Europe if one doesn't know the language where one find one in a lot of bad situations, here was not the case happily.
