How much do I love this place? It almost solely makes Fredericksburg a good place to live. Hyperion Espresso is what a coffee shop should be. I'm talking about a renicassnace style place where people meet to exchange ideas, people watch, read...what ever. They have slightly hipster but very friendly baristas, eclectic patrons, and great coffee. One of my favorite reasons to come back to Fredericksburg. I've had several items on the menu but, always end up coming back to the Chai. The Frozen Chai is amazing. In addition to their coffee, they offer all sorts of things.. protein shakes, juices, and lots of local baked goods. Equal parts amazing is the ambience. It is definitely your neighborhood coffee shop, with locals sitting out front, and UMW students inside reading. There is usually a line waiting to order whenever I've been in - but don't worry. We've been here many times and, overall, have enjoyed the experience. We've tried the coffee and several of the espresso drinks, which have all been good---not the best coffee we've ever had, but good nonetheless. They also have a good selection of tasty baked goods on hand (not sure where they're from). There's lots of seating, which is also a plus (though it does fill up during busy times. Bottom line: it's not the coolest or most delicious independent coffeeshop we've tried, so we don't go out of our way to come. Honestly, I cannot think of a better place to hang out with friends when you are in Fredericksburg. Growing up, this was the local hangout--the place my friends and I went at night to get together. It is in a great location, with plenty of outdoor seating. It's hard to describe, but when you are there you just feel like you are a part of the action-- you can see the downtown life in full swing, and be with friends while enjoying a hot beverage. It's a very relaxed place, with a friendly staff and a surprisingly large amount of seating for a downtown coffee shop. There is a huge age range of people who come here, usually anywhere from hipster teenagers and college students to an older crowd that sit with their dogs while they enjoy their cup of coffee. You really can get a good feel for Fredericksburg folk if you peer in through the windows. The drinks are good, sort of hit or miss. They have a large variety, and it took me 2 or 3 visits to find my favorite drink. Once I did, I didn't want to stop coming here. If you live in Fredericksburg, once you go here you will never return to Starbucks. The experience is just so much more enjoyable. read more

I visited this coffee shop again because I had to meet someone there. It's the same thing again. It's dirty and nothing special on the menu. The interior decor is something they haven't touch for 40 years. No a place I would like to spend time in. The back space is dirty also and a lot of space is just wasted. The bathroom is filthy! No parking. Prices are high. I wish this place was a Starbucks! If not a Starbucks l, someone needs to buy this place and build a nice coffee shop!!! read more

Hyperion coffee is a great local coffee spot. The drinks are quality and prepared quickly. There are pastry available (muffins, maple bars etc) but they are not the star of the show. The drinks are probably just a little expensive, but I just chalk it up to supporting a local business. No credit/debit cards accepted here. Make sure you've got your cash on hand (there is an ATM a block down the street.) The person taking the order can get a bunker mentality (Yes?, money exchange, next!) but I can understand how they get there. I'm there for coffee, not a friendly exchange about the weather and children. The lines can get long, but move quickly. Hyperion is a great spot downtown to get a good cup of coffee or tea. I don't usually get any of the fancier coffee drinks but I hear they do those very well too. The location is great and when the weather is nice you can sit outside and enjoy your drink. They also have a big selection of pastries but really its the variety of quality teas that I come back for. To comment on the review at bashed Hyperion for their café au lait: café au lait is just coffee with warm milk added to it. So they gave you what you asked for. Perhaps you should have asked for a latte or a cappuccino? Anyway, they are very helpful so if you just explain what you want in the drink, they will gladly make it for you. read more

This is probably the only legitimate independent coffee house in the Stafford-Fredericksburg Area. Service is fast and the coffee drinks are hot and made to order. Much more enjoyable than Starbucks with a laid back vibe. Love the free wifi and the mix of college students and Fredericksburg locals. What can I say? It is amazing? I was a little nervous about coming back to the Burg to get my taste of the Hyperion after 7 months of being out (yay me!!!) but return I did, with my full frequent flier card in hand. I was not to be disappointed after all. How could I have even doubted? I should hang my head in shame. I love Hyperion. I loathe Starbucks. It is all about the coffee really. Hyperion has that excellent balance of sweet and bitter that coffee lovers adore so greatly. Plus, it is just a wonderful place to be, as a regular they know your order, you are on a first name basis with them. It is a fantastic place to chill out on a rainy day with an Americano and a book. Great! The true and deserving social center of downtown Fredericksburg. The espresso drinks are excellent, prepared perfectly by very well-trained baristas. Definitely the best latte I've had in Virginia, and I've lived all over the state. The other fare is pretty typical coffeeshop stuff, but there is at least something on the menu for any palate. The atmosphere can seem a little cliquey but I can't really fault a coffeeshop for awarding repeat customers. Many of the customers have been going here daily for years. As amazing as their coffee is (try the frozen white mocha), this review is a little different than most. On Saturday July 6th at 2pm, my family and I were walking downtown and exploring the farmers market. It was extremely hot and humid and I noticed my two year old was overheating. I immediately headed into Hyperion to get her a cold drink and cool her down. I was holding her and she suffered from heat exhaustion and began to vomit. The baristas did not hesitate to bring out paper towels, wet rags and a trash can. I panicked and was distraught as I ran her out to the car and my husband stayed to continue cleaning and one barista stepped up and said "you can go with your wife, don't worry I'll finish cleaning." I'm so touched by how sweet and quick these girls were to help us out. read more

I like this place. As sparingly as I am in the area, this is my go-to. I like the décor, I like the vibe of the place, and the baristas are aways sweet to me. Coffee-wise it falls down a little. The espresso is relatively weak, and I'm not a big one for loading down my drink with ten gallons of syrup or milk. Rice milk is an A+ vegan option that I don't see at coffee places a lot. (I wonder how well that foams?) They carry monin syrups and are flexible on the amount they put on your drink, so don't hesitate to ask. Upon arriving at Fredericksburg to walk around downtown. We decided to hit the local coffee shop. Not surprised it was packed. It's ambience was so eclectic. The locals was as about as friendly has the staff. Not never been here. Did not get in the proper line. One of the employees was cleaning out the expresso machine and talking to a regular. Yelled at my wife and I. Saying if your wanting to order form a line down the side. Never been here we weren't sure where to go. Although the place was cool inside lots of history. Let me preface this with saying I like Hyperion. Their drinks are delicious but that is not all that matters to me when it comes to a coffee shop. This place is decent for dining in, doing work in, meeting friends in, or just relaxing and reading in. That being said, the staff are rude, the shop is loud which makes it difficult to hold conversations in or work or read. I like their outdoor seating, but their indoor seating is a bit uncomfortable. There are only hard surfaces which makes the place very echo-ey and cold. When it comes to coffee and drinks this place is great, but it has no elements that make me want to stay and relax for a while. Which for me, is a huge part of the coffee shop experience. Most visitors/reviewers love the non-cookie cutter vibe and I'm joining the ranks. It's like business casual meets hippie/bohemian . The indoor/outdoor furniture is rustic - dig the wooden benches and chairs that line the outside of the shop. It's very welcoming. Visited twice in one day and ordered a hot Breve both times - excellent (the second visit I originally asked for an iced breve but it didn't sit well for me and they were more than happy to remake another one but hot). And yes, they are known for their foam/mousse art. Kid friendly, even had a little corner nook with books that my two boys immediately gravitated towards. Also two bathrooms, one in the main area and one in the back sitting area. The regulars...one gentleman briefly spoke with me about how great it is to raise kids there and pointed out that HE used to be a pharmacy, this other lady was sitting in her wheelchair (kind of in the middle of the place) and was just smiling at Noah & Luc being curious. LOVE THE LOGO! Will definitely be going back and will try some of the other espresso beverages and other treats. read more

My brother and family always talk about the quality and ambience being above and beyond. I visited them from the West coast this weekend and of course I was brought here. I am impressed with this place. They have a variety of snacks and pastries to pick from. The staff is not robotic like corporate coffee shops. They take the time to actually help you create a beverage you'll enjoy rather than mocking you on your lack of coffee knowledge. They are kid friendly, pet friendly and have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Love this place and can not wait to come back again. read more

The coffee itself is pretty good, flavor-wise. It's in a pretty central location in the downtown area, with outdoor seating, so that's a nice touch. Also, there are plenty of plug-ins, so it was easy to get some work done. I wasn't impressed by the pastries. It's basically stuff you can get at Costco.... if I wanted a Costco muffin, I'd go to Costco. Hyperion is the place that everyone knows because it has the best location in town and it's been around forever. And it's good for what it is... a place to get OK coffee and then continue with the rest of your day. They discourage people hanging around (probably because they're always so busy). Hyperion has always been good for a quick beverage, and their stuff is all right (I admit I'm a fan of the Monkeylicious frappe, which is chocolate and banana), but don't count on them being the best in town. They also don't make their food on site. Warning that if you get a bagel from them, they warm it up for you in a microwave instead of a toaster. read more

I love going to this friendly, homey coffee shop with my 19 - year old sister with her friends, I always feel welcome and relaxed when I'm here. There is always a nice crowd of people there, never weird or creepy, and the baristas are very friendly. My favorite is the Italian Raspberry Soda, i think 3 shots...The interior is unusually large for coffee shops and has comfortable vibes and atmosphere, with comfy couches and coushined chairs, you can watch the town busily buzzing outside, but the outside noise is pretty much filtered out with the music and chatting customers......... I've never in my life met a group of people that are so miserable with life that they can't even smile, say good morning, hello, kiss my butt SOMETHING! They are just horribly rude. I don't get it.
