Normally I would be making one of my biannual trips to the town hall to pay my taxes (property in…read morethe spring, school in the fall), but when I got there this time, I discovered their setup is different for the moment, thanks to COVID. You can only enter the building if you've made an appointment in advance. Otherwise, for any paperwork processing, you can either leave it in the drop-off slot by the door, or mail it in (they have PO Boxes at the post office a 1-minute walk away. I mailed mine in this year and got my requested receipt back in 3 or 4 days. The Receiver of Taxes office was set up well even before the world changed. Other services in the building, as you might expect, include the Town Clerk, the Assessor, the Town Supervisor's Office, etc.. There are also meeting rooms available on site. There's usually ample parking (watch the directional signs), but in the case that the lot is actually full, you can also park on Main St. across near the library, and there's sidewalk access from there as well.

The PV Fire District holds a fundraiser event on Sundays, which has been going on for many years,…read moreand has them a couple of times a year. I was happy to attend it for the first time, with a small fee upon entering which all depends on the age, etc. The offerings include Pancakes (plain & blueberry), French Toast, Sausage, Bacon, Coffee, Tea, Chocolate Milk, and Orange Juice. I opted for the plain pancake, which sure was tasty, and sausage and bacon for the sides. Should have gone for the French Toast, which sadly didn't catch my eyes - oh well... always next time. Several volunteers are serving, and providing food, and drinks, including refills, and more food for request. Simply raising your hand will get their attention. The event runs from 7 - 10:30 am, and there is no limit on how much food you want and the amount of time spent. Plenty of tables are provided. Eat, and make connections here. Also, most importantly, I thank the PV Fire Department for all they do.

The Walden Fire District - Station 1 has one of, if not the BEST social hall in Orange County. My…read morewife and I had our celebration this past weekend and we couldn't of been more happy with our experience at the venue. Sue is the social hall director and was great by all aspects. She thoroughly explained our rental agreement/payment plan (made sure we had copies of everything), was quick to answer our text messages when we had questions, provided us with all of the necessary supplemental documentation for our liquor license, and helped reassure us to not stress when we had issues with emptying out the hall the following day. She even went as far to come out the night of our event to coach our cleanup crew, making sure they did everything correctly after we left the reception. Highly recommend!

If you love the nostalgia of fire trucks, Halloween, and/or the story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow--this is the place to check out! Their truck is the coolest one we've ever seen--painted orange and black with flaming jack-o-lanterns and the Headless Horseman. The window over the front door is a beautiful stained glass rendition of the horseman himself. I teach English and this year taught a unit on Washington Irving's story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. While in the actual location of the story, we had been looking for souvenirs and cool places to take photos. I saw a local fireman at a red light and asked if I could take a photo of his Sleepy a Hollow decal. I said, "You should sell t-shirts because I would buy one!" And he said,"We do! Let me meet you at the station." How lucky we were: they opened the doors to the garage and rolled out their amazing truck to share with our family--one of the firemen even gave us a tour and recited some of the famous local legend. Our kids were so excited! The t-shirts and hats are awesome, too! They have the Headless Horseman decal as well. Thank you for the gifted hat to my little boy, he was smiling ear-to-ear! This event was the highlight of our cross country trip from California and we will never forget! Thank you for giving us a memory we will never forget!!!

Never HEARD anything unusual until we settled in. Then I would hear this loud horrendous horn. It would give me heart palpitations, it goes off at all times, then it made my heart break when it went off and scare my baby, awaken the baby while sleeping, the poor thing. If I rented, I would have moved out but since I am stuck financially, I have to bear it. But, when I hear it, I think, as long as it's not my house and as long as my family members are safe. But when I do finally get to move out of here, I WILL NEVER MISS THAT FIRE HORN.

I…read moremoved here from San Diego last Fall, and had a few questions regarding speed limits on certain streets and other traffic related codes. Every time I called the Station, my questions were taken seriously and my questions were addressed. From my observations, the Officers take great pride in protecting our City. And during these turbulent times, I offer them my total support, and prayers for their personal safety. All of the Hyde Park Officers are part of what makes living in the Town of Hyde Park so great.
