Produce was reasonable, there's a small Mexican section, and there is a decent selection of HBA's (shampoo, etc.). There's no Target in town so that's important. Somewhat lacking in dairy selections (pretty much you get Blue Bunny and the generic) but this is a Blue Bunny town (though the milk plant's been sold to another brand.) The frozen food vegetarian selection was kind of lacking, but this is Iowa, and Fareway will order things for you if you ask and if their distributor carries it.

Anotjer 10-15 minutes went by and nothing and I finally said screw it and left with no resolution to my problem at all. Anyone who has been in a Walmart knows what to expect as they are pretty similar across America. This one, being in a small town, isn't as packed as others I have seen in larger cities. It's a more casual atmosphere that is relaxing to shop in. Due to it's location off the highway, there isn't much additional shopping nearby but there are a couple good options for dining. We pulled off I-29 with a wink and a prayer, hoping we could find a grocery store... as luck would have it, we found our way here. This smallish grocery store (by our spoiled SoCal standards) reminded me of grocery stores when I was a little kid: no big fancy displays, no gimmicks, no 10¢ a grocery bag... just a clean well-stocked grocery with nice folks running the joint. There is a low glass case at the meat department and--get this-- butchers working back there! Fresh produce and cold drinks, soft bread, and enough sugary junk for the kids... a couple of bags of ice and we were back on our way: mom making sandwiches on the truck center console, and kids rattling chips bags in the back seat. Small town Iowa doesn't mean small selection at this local grocery store…read more My father-in-law is from Remsen, with his 90 year old mother still residing blocks from the downtown. We stopped in for a family reunion and I forgot I was asked to bring an appetizer. So to the grocery store I went! Walking in, I wasn't quite sure what I was going to find. But I was very impressed with the selection and honestly the prices weren't that more expensive then smaller grocery stores in bigger cities. Anything more expensive is basically paying for the convenience of shopping last minute (as well as supporting a local family business) and I think that's totally worth it! Two things that really blew me away were; 1) The beer selection. Dozens of craft beers at reasonable prices. He even carded me when I got some adult beverages. (I turn 30 in 10 days, but who's counting?!) 2) The service. The owner greeted us as we walked in, offered to help us find anything a few minutes later and finally was more than willing to help load the car once we checked out. I know this grocery store is under new ownership-- I think he's really doing a fabulous job stocking the shelves with lots of options and is beyond professional and courteous to his customers. I'll definitely be stopping in next time I'm in Remsen!
