This is probably my favorite Hy-Vee Market Grille/Cafe that I've been to. The staff is always very nice and helpful. They always have a fantastic selection of craft beers on tap and great food. I always get a specific special breakfast for my diet and they're always able to accommodate me. I have probably been to this Hy-Vee Market Grille/Cafe over a dozen times and I've never been disappointed. It used to be a full service restaurant but they recently changed it to a self-serve Hy-Vee Market Grille/Cafe Express, which is just as good. I will definitely be back! :) read more

This place used to have bartenders and servers. Now they apparently don't even have anyone to empty the trash or wipe down tables. They offer beers for $2 a piece but it's a joke because there is no one to even serve them. read more

By advertising paraphernalia and asking a server, we were led to believe they had the NFL Sunday Ticket. With 12 TVs, it seemed like a good idea. We then found out that "it wasn't working". We asked to have the two local games put on the TVs and that was a chore too. The two girls working as servers (and apparently doubling as bar staff too) were very polite, but I felt clueless about sports. She forgot my beer the first time as I believe we flustered her with the questions about the games. Both of them did an excellent job checking in on us however and drinks stayed filled after the initial contact. I ordered the brisket burger. The patty was quite large and the bacon served on top of it was nice and crispy. The brisket was tasty, but there was a dearth of BBQ sauce. The hand-cut fries were very tasty. The ranch I added on the side seemed to come directly from Hellman's or Hidden Valley. One time, I saw a manager pop in, but he was about as useful as an 8-track tape. I'm not convinced this place knows what they want to be. Part of it appears they want to be an upscale bistro. But then they offer a buffet from the hot cases in the grocery store. Then they had gameday specials ($10 unlimited wings, $8 burgers w/bottomless fries, $6 fries, and half-price appetizers). Figure out what you want to be and focus on that, because its a hot mess otherwise. read more

I've been meaning to post a review for some time; I moved from Arizona to Iowa two years ago, and the people at this location gave me my first and continued impressions of Iowa. I've literally had hundreds of excellent customer experiences here, but I guess it's human nature that we're more inclined to escalate a complaint rather than a compliment. And I am disappointed that this location is turning from its current format, because they've done such a phenomenal job. Led by Jim, who works harder than any restaurant manager I've seen and is personable and friendly with everyone who walks into the the Market Cafe. The other managers, servers, and bartenders are outstanding as well. I typically come in on my own, but Katharine, Alexis, Nick, Madison, DJ, Jasmin, Victoria, Connie, Ben, and all the other employees make me feel as if I'm sitting at an eight-top because of their professionalism and customer service. But what I've come to find, is that is how they treat everyone! I am not a fan of the corporate decision at this point (which I will comment on a later time), as there is such a great model for leadership and teamwork exemplified in this establishment. I always hate to leave negative reviews; even more so one star reviews. I mean, if you can't say anything nice why say anything at all, right? However, my meal was so spectacularly bad that I just had to say something. Service was non-existent, but to be honest, it's a cafe in a grocery store. I expected that. This didn't bother me. And I didn't expect my food to be particularly outstanding, because again; it's hot food in a grocery store. But yet, somehow with the lowest of expectations, I was still let down. I ordered the sirloin because honestly, how can you mess up steak, right? Apparently they found a way. I was served a lump of untenderized, unseasoned and overcooked steak that tasted far more like a badly executed beef roast than anything else. It came with a side of wild rice, which was undercooked and tasted like bird seed, as well as a baked potato...which was actually okay, so kudos for that. Meanwhile my girlfriend had ordered the mac-and-cheese burger, which was also horribly overcooked and spent far too long under a heat lamp, and a side of fries which were oversalted to the point of being inedible. Definitely don't see myself going back to this one any time soon. read more

I will grab a bite here frequently with my two year old twins. It's convenient before we grab groceries. The boys like the breakfast food and I really like the Buffalo chicken sandwich with the sweet potatoe fries. The service is good, people are very nice. I used to eat here almost every Sunday. Since they upgraded to "Market Place," it has really gone down hill. This morning I ordered a skillet breakfast. They put a sausage gravy on it with so much pepper or hot sauce it was not edible. The price is higher, the quality is bad. Cold coffee, toaster with out butter. I've been here a couple of times, the food was ok, service was alright but a little passive aggressive at times. I get off work at 9:00 on Friday nights and since many restaurants close at 9:00 I have to find a restaurant that is open until at least 10:00. I wouldn't go into a restaurant a few minutes before they close because I don't want to do that to the employees, I know how it feels as I worked in restaurants myself for many years. I checked online before I left work and the Hy-Vee website said that the Market Cafe is open until 10:00. I arrived at 9:10 and walked into a darkened dining room with chairs up on the tables throughout except for a couple of tables near the bar, and disappointed faces. I was greeted and was told that they are only serving appetizers after 9:00. I replied that I had checked their website to ensure they would be open but he repeated that they only serve appetizers after 9:00. Why would you only serve meal starters and no entrees? The only logical reason I can think of is that the employees and a willing accomplice in management want to go home as soon as possible and don't want to work too hard in their last hour. The comfort and convenience of the customer is not even a factor which is evident in the chairs being on the tables an hour before closing. Why don't they just close at 9:00 if they don't want to serve customers after 9:00? Why confuse customers with ridiculous rules that only serve the employees and infuriate and customers and make them feel unwelcome. I decided to leave and had a nice dinner at Casa Azul instead. read more

Waited a long time to be seated when only two tables were being used. We had to ask the baker outside the cafe if someone could seat us. The waitress apologized, but then proceeded to give me a salad with grilled chicken that wasn't fully cooked. The chicken was raw and too chewy when eaten. This morning I woke up with an aching stomach. I would not recommend going to the cafe at Hy-Vee, even if you are going for a quick meal. Although the staff is kind for apologizing for being seated late, we were let down again by the food they served. Please be aware of your food if the meat is grilled, make sure it's not raw or you will end up sick the next morning. I would give this zero stars if I could. read more

I went there around 8:30am on Sunday to get breakfast, and noticed they were moderately busy, so when the staff person seated me I told her I knew what I wanted and could give her my order. She replied that someone else would take my order, and away she went and never returned, and nobody else did either. I made eye contact with the wait staff in my vicinity, and even waved my hands to no avail, so I got up and walked out. I guess this was my day to be invisible....Ever since the Hyvee went upscale to the "Market Cafe" concept the quality has gone down and the prices have gone up. Since I have always had better service at the Dodge street store, I'm thinking it may be time to evaluate the manager at Coralville. I will never eat there again. read more

My boyfriend and I needed to get groceries but were hungry, so we decided to try out the Marketplace Cafe for dinner before shopping. We were a little confused when we walked in whether to wait to be seated or seat ourselves (it was a slow weeknight). We obviously hovered long enough to be seen by a waitress and then seated. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The menu was full of many options from sushi to pasta to steak, etc! The prices were not bad, either. My boyfriend got the cheeseburger and fries and I got the loaded white cheddar mac and cheese. My meal came with a salad and butter garlic roll. The house salad was good but the roll was hard as a rock and was inedible. The pasta was very good and I ended up taking half of it home because of the large portion size. My boyfriend said his burger was good and enjoyed that there were lots of cheese options. Overall we enjoyed our trip and will go back again sometime. read more
