Keeping as close to my home attempt as possible (passionfruit inspired), I chose the passion fruit mist gateaux. White chocolate mud cake, passion fruit mousse and lime curd. I'm a chocolate girl but this was devine. Really fresh flavours and light enough for a second piece. Haven't been for a while and was surprised to find it doubled in size and serving dinner twice a week. Seems they've joined the fancy donut craze but I'm not complaining. Love the new look cake boxes too. Much prettier than the old plain white. Will have to return for breakfast, lunch and maybe a dinner.

Main eating areas inside and out, along with some quirky spots. I imagine the evening ambience to be quite nice. I have eaten here much as it tends to be on the dearer side but I've liked what's been presented. The staff all seem fairly young, possibly uni kids who engage each other more than worrying about patrons. But they are nice non the less. The outside area is great for those who want a little something and have your dogs with you.

But Frankie's Place with its aqua exterior really stands out and provides the relaxed feel you would expect from a beach city. Catching up with my brother for lunch and both being on and off conscious of diet we chose the roast pumpkin salad with chicken for an extra $4. The best salad I have ever ordered. EVER! I truly can not fault it. The honey mustard dressing was superb and the goats cheese and avocado were a great creamy addition. The pepita seeds were the cherry on top providing that crunch of texture salad sometimes needs. After drinking an awful smoothie recently in Sydney I was hesitant to order the banana version and settled on the Prince frappe consisting of mango, raspberry and pineapple. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! And so refreshing. My brother ordered the healthy super smoothie which I had been turned off as soon as I read spinach but after trying a sip, will not be deterred again. As good as the Prince, only $2 more at $9. A great place for lunch in Newcastle.

Regardless, it remains one of my "go to" cafes when in Newcastle for a consistently good breakfast (try the salmon - you'll never turn back) and a coffee. There's a gorgeous outdoor courtyard or upstairs area to dine in. Be warned though, this is one popular lady so she fills up quickly during peak dining times. On my last visit I feel like they'd maybe changed ownership as although still good it didn't pack as much of a punch and the whole book serving was a new thing. Frankies' don't disappoint me now!

I needed a cake for 200 and they obliged quite easily and with friendly service. The cake was a chocolate caramel mud cake with a chocolate fudge icing. What my guests didn't eat I kept in the freezer and ate for the next few months. Yes.. it was just that awesome. :)

The open prep area gives off a tradies haunt kind of vibe but they usually spot good food if not great presentation. Gave it a shot as they also had cakes on display which I was needing to get for a family dinner that night. I picked the chocolate cake to take away, BLT wrap with chicken for my partner, chicken and Camembert wrap for me, a coke and an iced chocolate. I'm used to iced chocolates being generously topped with whipped cream but this one had none so that was a bit sad. I was drawn to my wrap as Christmas isn't far away and I instantly connected the delicious duo of Camembert and cranberry. Oddly it was put together with a Mexican theme instead with sweet chilli, avocado and sour cream. It was delicious and not a let down without the cranberry sauce. Both wraps were massive and well filled. My partner especially enjoyed the bacon, tomato and mayo flavour combo. There was a lunch deal of a pie and coke for $6 and definitely bring along your entertainment voucher. The cake itself was just over $41 but with the discount I got it and all our lunch order for only $51. The size of the wraps are definitely what sealed it for me though. I love big portions!

The customers are a blend of bare-footed surfer dudes and suited 9-5ers. A short walk from the hip Darby Street, Welsh Blacks offers a different pace and a haven for those who enjoy the art of coffee. Just as their business card says, these guys are "coffeesmiths." It's their trade. They're not young upstarts paying their way through uni. This is their full-time jam and it shows. The food menu is sparse and that I'm sure is a deliberate act. There's a few cakes and slices, two toasties, a salad and a chia pudding to select from. Most sit under the $10 mark. Unfortunately the morning I arrived their grinder wasn't playing fair. They were so apologetic to customers as they explained there was up to a 15 minute wait while they took stock of the situation. While it eventually was up and running I'm aware it may have altered their brews for the day and in this case I say, "Great marketing fair chaps!" because it's this reason (also the fact they're super cool and it's a chilled vibe) I'll be returning to enjoy more of their coffee menu.

It was glorious, like cold chocolate concrete. The open kitchen had an amazing aroma to it, the smell of beef and bacon and toast. It made us wish we weren't full from an earlier meal.
