Expensive, busy, the stalls and rides are rip offs, fights break out, food is highly overpriced. Nothing amazing for certain.

over the years I have enjoyed many festivals in York…read more unfortunately today was not one of them. only a few displays in Parliament square. all the cafes full or not selling food the main A19 route in, had planned roadworks causing a 15 min outward journey to take 55mins just to get back to the designers centre car park York town parking charges ridiculous I will give it a miss in the future

Have to give this 5 because for a week in mid feb. York is invaded by Vikings. You see them sat on…read morethe pavement eating chips, pushing trolley in the supermarket and downing a pint in the pub. The Festival sees hundreds of Vikings descend on the city and demonstrate battle-drills and training routines. The city is also treated to a range of public events including lectures, arts & crafts, encampments, river events, saga-telling, and full-scale battle re-enactments. There are British Viking re-enactment groups (I am an honorary Vikeskill in battle..sword/longbow) and Scandinavians. By Cliffords Tower battles are fought once more. There are longboat races on the River Ouse and it all culminates on the last night in a brilliant firework display that follows an umganger (forgive my spelling if it is wrong) a ceremony for the dead by torchlight procession and the burning of a Viking ship (of the dead). The battles at Cliffords Tower grounds attract too thick a crowd to see if you are not there first. Last time I went it was incredibly windy. The Viking chief stood atop a tower and fired a flaming arrow at the ship. The wind took it..several more failed. One hit the sail..a cheer went up then it fell into the river..wahhhhhhhhhhh from the audience. Suddenly a war cry went up from maybe 50 warriors. They ran through the crowd to the river bank. 50 flaming arrows went off and the ship began to burn! Riotous cheering! Wrap up warm, especially kiddies, as it can be very cold at night.

This is a free near enough all day show at the Doncaster Museum…read more it's always in the second week of July and has a variety of different performers such as bands, singing groups, dance groups etc. It's great for families and groups of friends to come along and watch and support others. you dont have to stay the whole duration as you could just go to watch certain people you may know performing in it. I've performed with my own dance group here on more than one occassion in the past and this year i wasn't performing in the show but came along and supported my group. i can say each year i've been here it has always been a lovely day (weather wise) and seeing others aswell as performing is just spectacular. I've seen some every talented young people perform and it was just amazing to watch. There's other things there such as hot dog stalls and paintings etc. They have a rule for if the weathers bad and it rains, and the rule is if it rains everyone goes in to the civic theatre and perform there. I know my dancing group just wish one time it will actually rain just so we can perform in there as it's just a great place to perform, but the weather is always great so it hasn't happened just yet. There are always people taking photographs of the performers for the newspapers which is great for them to get a chance to be noticed for their talent. Some of the things shown might interest some people and might not interest others but it's definately worth just spending your time there and watching it all as what other show can you go to that's free?

Usually the first weekend in Dec. Thurs eve to Sun eve…read more Running for over 20 years I first had a stall here in year 2 up until a couple of years ago when costs became so high it became unprofitable. As a stall holder it became a victim of it's own success. From about 14 stalls to maybe to 3/400? It now issues a survival guide to visitors?? visitors - 160,000 - 180,000 opver the 3 1/2 days but I remember once over 450,000 when a ferry came from Holland plus all the British and German coaches. The Lincoln Christmas Market takes its inspiration from its German twin-town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. The biggest in Europe apparently. Lots of TV coverage. The stalls run from The Cathedral through Castle Sq. inside the castle, and around the streets with a one way system because of the crowd intensity. The lawn and The Assembly Rooms have craft areas and there is a food court. Gluewein is in everyone hand. It has a huge fair and has had ice rinks and circuses some years. International choirs and bell ringers etc and on Sunday night the Cathedral choir come out and sing carols round the Christmas tree. Friday and Sat can be uncomfortable..shuffling along and unable to get to stalls. Thurs evenings are locals and easier and Sunday day (not open late Sun) is easier. Evening is the best time for magic though. Floodlit Castle and Cathedral, people carrying lanterns, a lit up fair..lots of yummy food and GLUWEIN (do I keep mentioning the gluwein?) Stall have everything from German food and gifts to crafts and things to buy for Christmas presents..rare to see ordinary stuff of markets. Try it!

A short and sweet review. Amazing…read more It has not gone down the tacky road of a market selling tat and is a quality day out just looking around and getting involved. Try and get public transport though.
