The small Ossuary (Bone House) dates back to the 12th Century with more than 1,200 skulls in the 8'x8' room. Six hundred and ten of those skulls are painted and sorted according to family names and dates of death. The ossuary was created in response to Halstatt's small size and lack of ground for traditional burials. The most recent addition to the ossuary was in 1995. The graves are opened 10+ years after burial and the bones are removed making room for the next local. The skulls were then bleached, cleaned and painted with decorative designs. Entry to the ossuary is 1,50 and is found on the quiet end of town. Of you look up a bit you'll see a church overlooking the city...head that way. There's also the more recent cemetery featuring beautiful graves with flowers and shrubs pouring over.

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I was lucky enough to be able to go to Charnel House on Halloween. Its pretty easy to find, just walk to the church at the top of the hill. Go behind the church and check out the beautiful view near the amazing cemetery. You will see a small "house" with skulls and bones on the door, you pay a few Euros and walk into a small room. You are given a paper with all the info you will need and are allowed to spend as long as you want inside to view and pay respect to the deceased.

This is where Mozart's widow Constanze, Mozart's father Leopold and Nannerl's daughter's forever residence. Go visit the cemetery in a gloomy winter day, and feel the somberness of the crying angels. Many beautiful iron crosses standing above a blanket of greenness with hundred years old trees looking over, like God looking over Its people. Death is beautifully peaceful here. One of my favorite places in Salzburg.

There are gardens, Mozart's baptism…read moretub & wait for it.... walk past the gardens and you find catacombs carved tunnels in the mountain. For only 2euro you walk the stairs inside the mountain for a breathtaking view from the stone carved out windows! To actually be inside a building carved from a mountainside is a wish of mine so a very pleasant surprise! Also the buried are allowed to stay on the grounds as long as the families pay a fee. Once they stop new people can and are buried in this centuries old cemetery. There are early 1400's and 2019 plots. Amazing flower beds and very well taken care of! Also there's a bakery right beside the water wheel at entrance of garden plots with the best hot steaming raisin bread I've ever had (4euros). Best ever! Truly a must do in Austria!
