SYN, an acronym for the Student Youth Network, is a fantastic organisation that Melbourne should be…read morevery proud of. A radio station that gives young people the opportunity to have their own spots should be applauded and lauded across town. If you are under 25 and would like to have your very own media career or radio show for that matter then make sure you get in touch with SYN. Each semester (they are closely affiliated with RMIT and other local univerisites) they offer radio training for a small fee - after all they have bills to pay. You'll get studio time, practice on the decks and lessons in producing a radio show. Once you have completed that, you can apply for the different slots and get your own show - free reign pretty much! I used the studios for a podcast before I got too old :( and loved every minute of it. So much fun. If you are more into TV then go and find out about close relation Channel 31. They have close links.
Sick of listening to radio announcers who are YELLING down the microphone at you? Sick of listening…read moreto moronic advertisements? Want to hear someone YOUNG and COOL talk to you about what's important to them? Thank God for SYN. This youth media company (all presenters and producers are under the age of 25) is renowned for its refreshing, youthful voice and quirky shows. Quirky? Well, on their radio station 90.7fm, there is a whole night dedicated to Asian Pop Music, during the day school kids take over the air and on Sunday nights you can get some sex and relationship advice. Most importantly, SYN provides a platform for young people to learn about the media and to make new friends. So if you are under 25 and keen to get your thoughts out to Melbourne, give these guys a call!
The newspaper that comes out seasonally, is the print version of the website www.broadsheet.com.au…read more This paper is full of interesting and insightful articles that focus on Melbourne and Melbournians. It wouldn't be Melbournian if it didn't have a strong focus on food, yet it also covers drink, art, fashion, entertainment, nightlife and more. Its full of witty and intelligent articles about interesting and meaningful topics - wow I didn't think I'd live to see the day, an insightful newspaper. Broadsheet have a beautiful old school presentation style with some old school mentalities. They provide a premium product that is a pleasure to read. It is available from selected cafes and venues around town, but if you need the gossip now head to the website. There is also an App that you can download for your smart phone. The website is updated much more frequently that the print version and gives weekly reviews, information on gigs, and anything else moving and shaking around town.
What?! Only one review? This is Broadsheet we're talking about here…read more I guess most people do the whole on-line thing, reading about whichever new venue has a review or profile, or generally the upkeeping of the on-line articles. Aka "Did you read about such and such" online. I'm quite satisfied with Broadsheet, even in the print form. It's good to get up to date little snippets about food or cafe openings in Melbourne, or pop up projects. But it's got an emphasis and focus on good bars that are open or have just done so. Generally speaking, Broadsheet covers a good range of places to be, eat, and drink. But there's fashion and other areas too.
The newsagency in Lygon Court is a kind of mix between a stationary store and a newsagents, with…read morethe emphasis on the magazine and newspaper elements of the latter and not the extras. There's a huge range of cards for all your basic occasions along with a selection of wrapping paper, and your usual selection of magazines and newspapers. The real strength of this shop is its' range of address books, diaries, notebooks and journals. There's a greater variety of styles and designs than a lot of stationary/notebook stores which cater to a variety of tastes, from plain black covers through to patterns and pictures. A good place to look for your next journal or diary, but be warned, the staff are a bit icy.
