How can you not give the Houston Press five stars? Want your money back? It's FREE!! These guys are really doing Houston residents a service. Not only do they have a list of the coolest events going on around town, they do some hard-hitting, in-depth reporting on some issues that the major newspaper might not want to get into. These days, the press is generally cutting back on everything, but nothing beats a reporter on the beat, asking difficult questions at City Hall. Since this is a weekly publication, the Press has the opportunity to go more in-depth in some issues that a daily newspaper mightn't want to take on. It's all free! The paper is heavily driven by advertisements, but they tend to be colorful and interesting to read. I wish they had more regular features that seem to have been cut out, like the News of the Weird, or a few more cartoons. I miss Life in Hell! Houston doesn't have a lot of options when it comes to free local news to read, and this is a valuable resource. I suggest you pick one up where ever fine free publications are served. If you're not into the news copy in this free publication, it is always good as a fly swatter or material for papier mache. read more

Free is always a good thing in my book. Whenever I'm bored I pick up a copy and check out what's happening in Houston. From time to time there are some really interesting articles from some cool POVs. My biggest complaint about this thing is the endless adult ads. As an outsider who frequently travels to Houston, I find the Press disappointing and even a bit insulting...insulting to my intellect, taste and a bit insulting to Houston for failing to highlight the diverse appeal of the City. I feel like I should be able to pick up a copy as a visitor and instantly find updates on all the goings on in the City - where to eat, drink and play. However, most of the print pages are wasted on overtly long diatribes by someone 'playing grown up journalist' or editors just joking around with each other. I usually appreciate attempts at wit. Maybe you have to be an editor to understand? The food reviews are astoundingly disappointing. They never inspire me to eat at the featured location (often a dive a million miles away anyway) with their poor writing and lack of knowledge. In short, I love the concept, but it seems as though the HP gets off on employing people who failed out of journalism school? read more

I wouldn't believe you if you said you'd never flipped through a Houston Press. This is Houston's most comprehensive listing of restaurants, bars, film, the arts, and music, and it's free. I don't think their restaurant or music reviews or that accurate, but they obviously work hard on them. This paper is the best way to find out about what's going on around town, whether you're planning ahead or looking for something new on a Friday night (and whether or not you share the Press's political views). The classifieds aren't that great, but they're about on par with Craigslist here. If you have a family, watch out for the last few pages of ...massage ads. Few grocery stores outside Beltway 8 carry Houston Press, and those that do seem to relegate this fun publication to the Apartments for Sale rack near the store exits. Whenever I'm in Houston, I manage to find a copy and relish it for all the bitchiness about Houston a group of writers can muster. My favorite column is "Ask a Mexican." Damn. Couldn't get away with that here in p.c.-land Chicago. read more

It is the best free publication in Houston. Dynamic, robust, funny, serious, satirical, ...and lots of cool articles on music and movies. It will have a snapshot of what is going on from week to week from upcoming concerts to festivals and other arts/science related events. The listing of free events is always something worth a look. Houston has so much to offer not everyone will know everything. Read further towards the back and you will see some amazing deals like free steak buffet from the local strip club...but there are oh so many of them! Startling but true there are enough clubs and happy ending related spas that pay enough to make this paper free. The cool content in the front is awesome enough to offset the filth however enticing it may be. My favorite section is the one about the local food scene. I am legitimately a fatty so I like reading about the local flavors, upcoming openings, the new watering hole and even the best fries or steak or whatever they have in mind that week. There should be more reviews of this awesome magazine! read more

I have witnessed the quality of writing deteriorate in recent years to the level of over hyped, yellow journalism that is TMZ or E channel. The over reliance on sex industry and personal ads as a revenue source doesn't help. Great for lining dog crates and cat litter boxes though! read more

Who doesn't love the local alternative papers? The Press reminds me of the Press in Anchorage--wonderfully in-your-face liberal and funky. You'll never know what to expect each issue as they cover random stories. They have great reviews of bands and of course the famous "Best Of". The "Best Of" section has been my true friend this last year while trying to get used to city life. That's where I've found some of my favorite restaurants and kept up with what's "in". Best of all, you can find them just about anywhere for free and you can peruse the articles online. And unlike most papers, their website is actually easy to navigate and isn't crazy flash heavy. Kudos to The Press for keeping Houston hip and cool. read more

I called the Houston Press and the front desk lady had the worst phone mannerism. When I told her that I researched my information, but I was calling-in to double check, she responded by saying "Well Google is your friend" sarcastically. Then she hung up before I could respond. Please work on your front desk staff, people like her will only shy away business that your company can profit from. I did not get that response from the Houston Chronicles or the Houston Business Journal. read more

In regards to Tuesday's event, April 12 2011, I am appalled at the disrespect and lack thereof you have shown towards our "quiet" community. The new artist community in our neighborhood is accepted by many however, the leadership in marketing for your promotions and events is questionable. Tuesday's event was not a reflection of the celebration of an art community, but rather a display of a college spring break gathering. May I remind you that this is a quiet, family oriented community; not a college campus! Your event forced my family indoors on a rare beautiful evening. Our three year old son was in tears and in fear of the volume in which you allowed for the band that attended your display. Our son could not sleep nor did he feel he was in a safe place to do so. There is a townhouse directly across the street from Spring Street Studio, houses a family with a new-born baby. We did not receive warning or notice of your event and you have in my opinion violated our space and environment with high traffic along with a level of noise only acceptable in enclosed arena's. A close friend of mine is a prominent figure in the Houston artist community as well as abroad. In fact, he was one of the first artists to display and rent a location in Winter Street Studio. After speaking with him about his participation, involvement and experience in the art community of Houston, he has expressed never witnessing such a disrespect for a community as you displayed Tuesday. This is a quiet community with family, close friends, and a way of living that does not include a "MTV Cancun Vacation" style of rant. I speak for our community and for those in the surrounding neighborhood. My wife and I both have been working with advertising agencies for over 12 years and have never even dreamed of running such an invasive campaign for any reason. We and our community would like to ask that you earn our respect by taking this letter and future events into consideration. read more

I find the Houston Press poor in quality and they are very disorganized when trying to promote or advertise local businesses. Committments are weak and subject to change if they feel they can can more of a share of the revenue. The model is likely to limp along if management does not get there act together. read more

I've been reading the Houston Press since I landed in Houston over 25 years ago. I've always counted on it for a one-stop catch-up on major city happenings. For theatre, movie reviews, good food, and all things music it's an invaluable resource. Plus, it's often humourous or offbeat. Through the years, as paper and ink costs have risen, the printed typeface has gotten smaller and smaller as my eyes have been aging, making it difficult to read most of the actual paper newspaper now. However, online is a great way to access it and there's the additional advantage of being able to search easily for events. Mostly the online search is user-friendly, but still could use some tweaking. Emphasis seems to lean heavily toward nonethnics in a city that advertises itself as one of the most widely diverse in America, so that could also use some squeeging. But to have a large city like Houston without its FREE!!! events newspaper, that would be very sad indeed. read more
