First saw a painting by Ning Hou during undergrad, and my mom had a few personally gifted to her by the artist himself! His gallery is on Main Street in the tiny town of Locke (near Walnut Grove) and it was a treat to see in person. Not only is it a gallery, but on Saturday mornings it is also a Fine Art School where you can take painting classes from him as well! The themes of most of his work are based on the nature and the river Delta countryside surrounding Locke, an agricultural region and community built by Chinese immigrants in the early 20th century. His subjects range from landscapes to orchards, farmlands, still life, animals, Locke, Colorado, California, Florida, and people. It's a charming scene, and the place is full of history too. Appreciate seeing and supporting local Northern California artists, and Asian-American at that. read more
