First, I would like to clarify that the main Yelp picture for the Hotel Wartburg - that of the handsome, finely-dressed man holding a glass of white wine - does not exist at the hotel, nor does he come with the room that you book there. The only men we saw at the lobby were either exasperatedly discussing the number of shopping bags his wife/gf had accumulated during the course of the day, or were languidly waiting for a ride to the airport. Sorry to disappoint.
We found Hotel Wartburg in a desperate search on booking.com, when we decided to venture into Stuttgart at the last minute. The hotel was the most reasonable we could find for downtown Stuttgart at the last minute - about EUR140 for one night, including parking and breakfast - but the hotel has seen better days.
While remodeled on the OUTSIDE, the Wartburg still maintained its old 80s green carpeting and wooden furniture. The hotel lift, which optimistically states can hold up to 4 people, was barely large enough for my petite self and husband and 2 carry ons. The lift is also old school, where you must open a door to enter the elevator (provided the elevator is on your floor and not above or below - otherwise your first step's a doozy, and you may risk a nasty head injury and finally see the handsome man of Hotel Wartburg as pictured on Yelp).
Our room was huge, however, very clean, with a comfortable bed, a fridge and a large bathroom with shower. The bathroom was stocked with all the basics. Our windows overlooked the parking lot and our car. it was about a 10-20 minute walk to the shopping plaza and Schlossplatz. All of the staff were very friendly, though not as English-inclined (I think the hotel seems more local German or other European guests can Americans).
Our buffet breakfast was also typical with mainly cold cuts, cheese, breads, juices, yogurt and some scrambled eggs. The kitchen staff was also chatty and friendly as they gave us our coffees and promptly took away our plates.
A pleasant stay overall, but given the price and condition of the hotel - plus the fact that downtown Stuttgart doesn't seem to be as interesting after work as we'd thought - we may not stay there should we decide to return. read more
