It was one of those long weekends, and since places opened again after the COVID-19 lockdown, it…read morewas time to get away for a few days. This place caught our attention on booking.com, and with a lot of expectations, we drove all the way to the Schwarzwald to spend a few relaxing days hicking and using the spa.
Well, what should I say, the Waldsägmühle Hotel is overall a nice and clean place but lags 4 stars in any way.
It was starting with the reception desk that lagged attention on our arrival.
The room was clean but super small. I could barely turn in the bathroom, and I was freaking hot in there due to closed windows and no shutters or other shade to prevent the summer sun from creating a mini greenhouse effect. No A/C (which we didn't expect) and no fan (which we surely expected in a rooftop room). No Kleenex, no free water (but wine for an extra charge sitting there in 28C room temperature).
Breakfast had a good selection but was buffet style--an issue in my point of view during Corona times. You could order eggs and omelets.
The spa area was under construction (which we found out on the first morning when the table saw woke us up). Yet, you could use the indoor and outdoor pool and other facilities. Everything was clean and maintained. There were no towels available, and you had to bring it from the room and also take it back, which I find annoying.
I assume because of the construction you couldn't sit out side at the pool. Well, you could if you were willing to roast in the August sun, cuz there was no umbrella or there like.
There was also a lag of attention of the personnel. After 3 hours chilling at the spa (inside, cuz it was kind bareble temp.), I haven't seen a single soul picking up those weird fuzzy blankets on the chairs or clearing the dishes (free coffee, tea, and water were available).
Speaking of personnel. They were "friendly," but I always had the feeling that I was bothering them for some reason. They seemed to be stressed and, in my opinion didn't work very efficiently. I'm not a service professional, but even I know that when you wait tables, you never-ever walk empty. Not our server at our first dinner. She could walk by our table 3 times without problems ignoring empty plates, which were already sitting there for over 10 minutes, instead of taking care of some, it seemed, local regulars.
Because the next restaurant was quite far away and since we were tired from hiking all day, we decided to give the restaurant another chance the 2nd night. Personnel was still weirdly running around headless, but the food was actually ok. Pricy though.
Overall I can't give more than 3 stars, which is a shame, but it's just too much money for what it is.
