What a mistake that would have been. This place has been an absolute Godsend for us. First of all yes the rooms are a bit on the small size compared to in the U.S. But we do have 4 people in one room. Also keep in mind that they want you to use the public areas of the hotel. They have free cake and coffee and juice available pretty much around the clock. The staff have all been fantastic. They speak multiple languages and everyone's English is very good. The hotel provided us with 4 very nice mountain bikes, for one of our days to explore Bern. It was an easy ride into town on bike roads. Having bikes really opened the city up to us we rode all over town easily. The breakfast is fantastic and they give you plenty of time to enjoy it. The parking is ample and secure. If you are planning on seeing Bern but don't want to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle stay here.

The elevators here are amazing. Stay here for the elevators alone. When riding the elevators you don't feel a thing. It's like sitting in your chair reading this review, super smooth and crisp, and the next thing you know you're on the 4th floor. The elevators in America are terrible. Hurkin' and jerkin' around, you nearly get whiplash and hurt yourself. The elevators in Germany and Switzerland are the best in the world. Smooth, and fresh, and clean. A young lady's voice recording in a very soothing voice speaks to you announcing the arrival of the next floor (in German), then the doors open. The whole time you don't feel a thing that's how smooth the ride is. Aside from the elevators, they have an awesome bar / restaurant / bar, bar in the lobby. I went to the bar a few times. Once when checking in, once when my girlfriend was in the shower, once after dinner for post dinner nightcap. The restaurant for breakfast? Oh yeah, also awesome. You can get a full English breakfast (which I did)... eggs, tomato, meat, coffee... Or you can get local... pastry tea, coffee, etc... The locale of this hotel is also Prime-Time. Bern is a super walkable city. You can walk to everything. Train station, bars, shopping, restaurants, sights, rivers, bridges. The room itself was also really good. Comfortable bed, the towels were really soft. Hotel staff super nice. They gave great recommendations on where to go eat, etc. If I came back to Bern, and would love to, I would stay here. You should stay here too.

Even when we initially stopped by to drop off our bags, the attention to detail and level of care shown by the staff who assisted us immediately stood out. Every interaction felt thoughtful, professional, and genuinely welcoming. The check-in process was seamless, and the front desk lady was incredibly helpful and accommodating. Our room was absolutely spectacular!!! It was beautifully designed, elegant, and filled with high-end amenities. One evening, I wasn't feeling well :( and ended up staying in, and I truly appreciated how comfortable and luxurious the room was. Having such a stunning space, complete with a balcony overlooking the city, made all the difference and turned what could have been an unpleasant night into a restful and peaceful one. Also, one of the days, after a long stretch of exploring Bern, we decided to stay in and eat at the hotel lobby bar. We ordered their famous Wienerschnitzel, and it was outstanding (a must if you stay here). What made the experience even more special was our server, who took the time to share the history of the dish with us. You could tell how much pride the staff takes in both the food and the overall dining experience. The bartender was also wonderful and made an excellent Old Fashioned (Adam approved) everything felt intentional, polished, and done with care. We also ordered breakfast via room service one morning, and it arrived perfectly!! It was on time, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. Overall, Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa is one of the most incredible hotels I have ever stayed in. It is easy to see why it is a five-star property (really) from the service to the accommodations to the dining, every detail is impeccable. This hotel has truly set the bar for us. We weren't aware they had other locations before this stay, but after experiencing the Bern property, we wouldn't consider staying anywhere else when visiting Switzerland again!!!

Es gibt hier keine Fernseher, darum ist man am Abend mal gezwungen sich mit seinen Kollegen Seminarteilnehmern auseinanderzusetzen anstatt in die Glotze zu schauen! The rates are the best I have seen around. The hotel is a bit far from Basel, maybe around an hour by train. But definitely worth the trip if you compare prices to Basel hotels which start at $350 a night.

Looking out to rolling hills, cows, deer, biplanes, and the storybook-like views you can only find in Switzerland is incredible. And the bed was comfortable. You cannot beat the location. Nestled at the entrance to the medieval city, staying here allows you to both easily walk anywhere in the city and park your car in their lot right by your rooms. No lugging your briefcase over cobblestones to get to your hotel in the medieval city, and no driving to get to the medieval city. And you aren't sacrificing any beautiful architecture staying here - it's a great building. The restaurant is so good! We had a lot of fun with the raclette, and the ice cream and meringue dessert was huge but super fun. If I ever came back to Gruyeres, I would definitely stay here again. We had a great time!

Note that all menus in Gruyeres are extremely identical so good customer service is a great way to set them apart. During our three visits we tried a variety of wines, Cafe Vienna, the beef broth soup, fondue, raclette, meringue and double cream, liqueur soaked cherries with ice cream and double cream and the salad. One dish that set this eatery apart was their version of the Brazilian pan de queso with gruyere stuffed in the center (perfection!). You'll notice that this restaurant takes over two buildings across the street from one another with patio seating as well as indoor (two levels). We really appreciated that they allowed us to share the one serving size of both the fondue and raclette (ordering two portions is not only too much food but pricey as well).

I am aware that AC isn't necessarily a standard or normal thing in Europe but I have been in plenty of hotels that do have it. Normally this issue would have brought it down by 2 stars but it only brought them down by 1 star because they went ahead and already had a fan in my room so that helped keep me cool at least. (Can't really sleep with the balcony open either because of all the bugs from the water) The added breakfast was good but nothing extra special or out of the ordinary. I absolutely plan to come back again in the future.
