We stayed at Hotel Ruby two nights last week after finding it on Orbitz. Because we would be getting into town very late, I called to make the reservations and found that doing it myself was the same price, if not slightly cheaper, than Orbitz. I don't travel a lot, so I don't know if this is remarkable or not. There is nothing at all sketchy about the neighborhood. Reviewers who were concerned about the safety of the neighborhood have clearly never spent any meaningful amount of time in an area resembling an urban downtown. I saw one or two "sketchy" characters my entire time there-- not a bad record, considering. It's in the heart of downtown Spokane, which is actually very small, so everything is super walkable. If you mention it when you book your room, a two night stay is good for a $25 gift card to the mall just a few blocks over. We also got a drink ticket for the Sapphire Lounge, which is connected to the property. Much nicer craft cocktails than I expected to see here, with a killer bartender. The room was small, and missing all the extraneous furniture I never seem to use in a hotel; chair, desk, etc. Hell, I was on vacation, I was okay with the bed being my only sitting device. The entire property has been renovated to be kitchy and cute without being over the top. Just a thorough cleaning, a few coats of colorful paint, and new fixtures (the light fixtures in our room were super fun). Top it off with nicer furniture, a flat-screen in every room, a well-appointed and clean bathroom, and a plush bed with very nice bedding, and I couldn't believe what I was getting for $60 a night! Everything was clean, everything functioned, and every room includes a fridge, freezer, microwave (those three things have been missing from MUCH nicer and more expensive hotels I've stayed at) and AC. Not perfect, but interesting and fun. Perfectly located, and absolutely, positively exceeds everything I'd expected for the price. I won't be staying anywhere else while visiting Spokane in the future. There's no way I could find a better deal. read more

I'm a very big fan of boutique hotels, and Hotel Ruby did not disappoint. I love the charm of this place and it's in a wonderful location right in the middle of the Spokane's theater district. Staff was AMAZING, Angel and DD May from the front desk were a great representation of what a first class front desk staff should be. Helped me extend by stay due to my flight being canceled because of the storm on the east coast. Showed a excellent example of team work while bar backing at Sapphire Lounge. Sapphire lounge staff is also top notch. The drink menu is something out of a movie, the way drink are prepared and hand crafted is something that you don't see every day. Rooms are nice, but you have to keep in mind that the property is going through a renovation, would love to come back and see the finished product. Rates were very affordable but there is a 5.00 a night parking fee if you have a car. I am defiantly going to stay here again next time I'm in the area. read more

The experience I've had here is as good as any hotel I stay. I don't come for pool, or attention. I come to stay an enjoy it while I'm here. The rooms are spacious for the price, the king size bed is more comfortable then my bed at home. Bathroom is huge, full shower an sink area. The staff is extremely friendly an have satisfied my needs, getting me ice, coffee, basics that most hotels don't they just point u to the ice. The maid leaves a personal note what a great touch. This is a great place to stay if you want to be treated well by staff and be in the heart of downtown Spokane at a great rate. Room was fine and was clean. Not anything to write home about but had funky style. The Sapphire lounge is super. Plus the drink coupon :)! The morning breakfast option is limited (coffee, bread items and cereal) but a simple way to get breakfast before starting your day. Reading other reviews on here and thinking hmmmm. If you are expecting an upscale hotel you will be disappointed , if you want a great price and location and clean rooms you will be happy. Had to stay here due to company not making accurate plans. This place looks like an old motel 6 with a lot of "lipstick" on it. The staff is friendly but that's all it has going for it. The rooms are old, small, and dark. Not sure how they call it a "motel" as that would mean the doors would be on the inside which they are not. A little scary in a downtown area. read more

We stayed at Hotel Ruby last minute on Christmas Eve. It was simple, affordable, and comfortable. There wasn't a coffee maker in the room, but grabbed some from the lobby. Appreciated the microwave and mini-fridge though. Even though the entrance to the room was outside, it felt more safe than the usual motel because of the parking lot gate that locked (not sure if doors are accessible to anyone though). The attendant was friendly and helpful. Would stay here again, especially for the price and location. read more

The room was very disappointing. You can tell that an old motel had lipstick put on it to try and make it look new and pretty. The walls in our room were covered in scuff marks and black smudges, the shower did not drain at all and the beds were very uncomfortable. And the heater did not work properly. We were either freezing or sweating no matter what we set it at. It is over priced for what you get. I will not be staying here again and will not recommend it to anyone. read more

Stayed here 3 nights. Place is a decent boutique hotel and an outstanding value. My cost was $75 a night which included taxes. They have recently remodeled them and were working on finishing up the last few. It's kind of like they tried to cover up all the old fixtures and stuff with some colors and fresh paint. Hard to explain, but they the craftsmanship was just ok. The bathroom wasn't much more than a 5 on a scale of 1-10. They have a small parking lot for cars if you drive. Not a bad place and again, outstanding value, but if you are looking for something nicer head down to the Davenport. They slapped on some new TV's but have the worst cable selection of anywhere I have ever been. No ESPN and No news programs. Free breakfast was pretty good. read more

Don't do it! Hotel was loud. Carpet felt sticky and all the finishes where poorly done. The worst was the beds. Oh my god they where terrible. I could feel every spring poking into me all night. OK....first things first. Hotel Ruby is not a hotel. It is at best a MOTEL, possibly a posh youth hostel. My travel companion picked this place for the location, decor & the included "breakfast". We shouldda known we were in for a hellish night (morning as it was 2am when we checked in). There were about 8 raging drunk dudes causing all sorts of trouble in the parking lot which all the rooms face. Other guests were pelting these doofs with full beer cans which would explode on impact. The doofs would then pick up the cans and drink what was left in the beer bombs. Seriously. All this was going on while we were waiting to be let into our room.See, our key card wouldn't work. It never worked. Do I need to mention that it was after a loooong day traveling & it was after 2am? The staff couldn't leave the desk to try to get us into our room for 45 minutes. We were standing outside in 30 degree weather watching these choads act like it was Spring Break in FL. Finally in our room, (it is nearing 4am!) and the room was clean & the bedding was quite nice. The restroom really needed attention & the TV didn't work coz someone had stolen the remote. Slept like the dead despite the above mentioned choads. Woke with a fright when the maintenance man came into the room unannounced & unexpected at 7 AM-ish to fix the door lock. I thought it was travel companion returning from "breakfast". Notice I keep placing quotation marks around "breakfast"? T.C. returned with an English muffin on a paper plate. There was nothing else available. Not even country crock for the muffin. Not one breakfast item mentioned on their website was available. SUMMARY= Hotel Ruby was not as promised, other than the room's nifty decor. To be fair, T.C. received a FULL REFUND with no drama immediately after the English muffin incident. I could not recommend this place. read more

This place was a joke. Looking for a cheaper hotel downtown, the pictures made this place look really contemporary and pretty spacious, but when we walked in we just laughed and said, "well, that's what we get for trying to go cheap." The ceiling in the bathroom was falling apart, as though they were still remodeling (they're not), and I joked that it made me feel right at home (I live in a 1907 apartment that is often falling apart). The staff was friendly and accommodating, but could not push check out time more than an hour, which is never the case in other places, and the maid ended up walking in on us anyway, though we tipped her well for putting her through that. Location-wise, it's convenient to downtown, but we absolutely won't be staying there again. read more

Hotel ruby is really cool. It's a remodeled crappy motel, which makes it unique and adventurous. The decor is rad and the sapphire lounge looks like a lot of fun. It's right in downtown so it's by all the bars and cool spots. It's affordable too, we got our room with two full beds for 100 a night on one of those trip websites. It was cheap o tickets or something like that. The room is clean, bathroom is clean. (the hot and cold in the shower is mislabeled tho) and there's also a fridge and microwave. I like this hotel a lot and I'll be staying here every time I come to Spokane. read more

I will definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in spokane. The location is prime, parking is only $5 dollars a night, the staff is wonderful, the hotel is very cool looking, and it is very affordable/reasonably priced. Aaron and Sarah at the front desk were excellent, so helpful/accomodating, and made the stay very pleasant. This is a non-smoking facility which I appreciated. Maria with housekeeping was superb and so sweet. She left us a nice note and our room was so clean it pretty much sparkled. I even liked the shampoo and conditioner they provided which is rare. The room also came equipped with a fridge, microwave, hair dryer, and iron/ironing board which came in handy. The breakfast wasn't that great but it was complimentary so I can't complain especially for the affordable price of the room. There is a very trendy lounge (Sapphire Lounge) across from the front desk. I can't wait to go back! read more

My coworker and I were in Spokane for a training, and needed to stay in a reasonable hotel. Our supervisor located the Hotel Ruby, and the pictures seemed like it would be fun! I even contemplated taking my wife there for Valentine's Day (which was before the conference). When we arrived, we liked how nice the lobby was, and how close the hotel was to the mall. The check in went very smoothly, and the clerk was very friendly. As we walked up the stairs to our rooms, we kept seeing room doors propped open with chairs, which seemed odd. As we entered our rooms, the funky decor couldn't help hide the smell, and less-than-stellar shape of the rooms. The room seemed clean, but there was this odor of old hotel rooms (why other rooms doors were propped open I assume). The walls had some markings and holes in them. The bathroom was a place you would rather not be in (not horrible, but not what was expected). I rated this a 3-star because of the noise. It seemed there was noise all night long. Trains, delivery truck with backup beepers, the bar emptying their bottles onto the trash, garbage truck, more trains, ugh. I am a heavy sleeper and I struggled with the noise. I know most of the noise is beyond the control of the hotel, but it should be noted for future guests. The breakfast was adequate, clean, and filling. I might stay at Hotel Ruby again, but certainly would not bring my wife (and hopefully not on garbage night). read more

Great location downtown near nightlife. A refurbished motel but heading in the right direction... almost. While the initial impression is of an edgy, boutique-type hotel, when it get down to the basics of what makes for a pleasant stay, well, not so much. The desk clerk was chipper but not very knowledgeable; I had to call several times for matters that should have been covered during check-in such as where is the ice machine? and What's the Internet password? (The Internet signal was weak and at one time down for quite a while) Then there's the fact that the bathroom (good shower) had no towels or washcloths. Oh, and the bathroom ceiling was dirty and stained. It is as though the owner and staff are just too cool to be bothered. Still a great location so there's hope. read more

I have been to Sapphire Lounge many times with great service. We decided to stay two nights in the hotel. The room was very clean and enjoyable to stay in. We even brought our dog which was great. I am never the person to do this but after we checked out and got home we realized we left a few items. I called the front desk to ask and the lady was not very helpful at all. Resulting in us driving all the way back down to check the room ourselves. When we got there the housekeeper was cleaning our room. She couldn't speak any English and had no idea what we were saying or looking for. We had to go through all the garbage she had to find our bag with personal items. If that was thrown away we would have been out hundreds for personal meds. Also left a blanket which she didn't realize apparently because it was thrown in with all of the sheets. If we wouldn't have gone down there ourselves we wouldn't have gotten any of our items that we left and also called about. read more

This was our second time staying at the Ruby, in other words, we came back. Yes the trains are a bit loud at night, as were some of the other patrons on a Saturday night after a hip hop concert at the Knitting factory. No biggie. Anyway, the rest is all good. Right downtown, great staff, the Sapphire is a nice place to relax with a cocktail or glass of wine with a decent flatbread pizza. With the free first beer, four glasses of wine, flatbread and an appy, the bill came to $25. Nice rooms, great artwork, good value all around. Will be back. read more

I booked four nights at the hotel but only stayed one. The hotel claims to be pet friendly. What it should say is you can bring your dog however there is no place for them to potty for six blocks. The front desk person suggested I have my dog poop in the parking lot then clean it up. First, my dog is well trained and knows better than to poop on cement or floors. Second, the people that allowed their dogs to poop there did not clean it up. Amazon not the hotel refunded me for two nights. The hotel refunded my $25 pet fee and $5 a night parking. That means I paid for a night I did not use and they rented it out. I would not suggest this place for anyone with pets. The rooms are very small and it appears they spent the majority of money on the shower. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs being you are right by the train tracks. It's a great location if you are wanting night life and shopping. Everything is in walking distance except for a place to let your dog poop at 5am. read more

I'm sorry to say it has taken me over a month to write a review for the Ruby and the Sapphire Lounge. I had a surprise birthday party for my husband on March 7th in the Sapphire Lounge and the staff at the lounge and the hotel was really great- doing all sorts of extra things to accommodate me for the party- moving chairs and tables around in the Sapphire and letting me get 4 rooms for myself and 3 other couples. The rooms are really cool with paintings by Ric Gendreau- one of my favorites. The price and location couldn't be better. read more

Found Hotel Ruby via a random Google hotel search for Spokane. Liked the website, loved the uniqueness of my accommodations. Obviously renovated, visually stimulating, clean, safe, affordable with all the luxuries of other hotels...continental breakfast, helpful staff, decent parking options and in a central location. Intrigued enough to book it for an evening, enjoyed my stay...will return. Great bar attached to the hotel also. Worth it. Enjoy! read more

We were in Spokane over the weekend for a concert across the street at the Knitting Factory. This is a GREAT place to stay if you are going to a show (there are other venues within walking distance too). We were literally a stone's throw away. The room was clean, front desk was very friendly, and we had a great bartender (Anthony) at the Sapphire Lounge. I would definitely stay again. The only downside is the very limited parking. Check in isn't until 3. We got there at 4 (for a show that was at 8), and there were only a few spots left. By 4:30, they were all occupied and there were still a lot of people trying to check in. However, there is some street parking, and they allow you to park at their other location, Ruby 2 just up the road. It is also an additional $5 for parking, which isn't bad, but should be included in the hotel cost. If you are going on a night of a show, expect that 90% of the guests are there for that show, and it will be loud before and after the show. read more

My husband and I stayed here the first weekend of August 2010. What a great find. The rooms were all newly remodeled and very nicely done. New carpet, paint, furnishings and bathroom fixtures. The bed was one of the best I have slept in at a hotel, very comfy. Nice linens and nice towels. Small room but organized nicely with a flat screen TV, microwave, minifridge and coffee maker. Blow dryer in the bathroom, and seperate 2nd sink outside the bathroom which I really like. One of the cleanest hotels I have stayed in. Value for this is excellent. The continental breakfast they served was much more than I expected, not just donuts and coffee like most inexpensive hotels. They had a good assortment of danishes, breakfast bars, bagels, juice, coffee, tea, orange juice and oranges. Within walking distance to shopping, restaurants, bars, and the Davenport hotel. Covered parking is free. We will stay here again. For under $70 this was the best place I have stayed for this price, in any city. We loved it! read more

Funky little hotel. The new owners have definitely made some nice changes and improvements. Good location right in the heart of downtown Spokane, although a bit of a pickle to get to during First Friday. Some outdoor noise due to the location, but I didn't think it was horrible enough to prevent me from going to sleep. Nice compact bathroom; loved the shower. Great pillows on the bed. Would have liked a coffee pot in the room, rather than having to go out of my room to get in morning. Parking is a bit limited. Not many spaces, but the second night of my stay they gave me a pass to park in a lot about a block from the hotel. Worked out just fine. Thought the price for parking was reasonable each day. Liked the personal note left on counter by the maid with her name and if I needed anything to contact her. Front staff at desk accommodating with allowing me an early check in to do an online conference call. Wi-Fi connection was very solid. I would stay again if just me. Maybe a little trickier with my young child and even though they take dogs, not sure if I would tackle that. Also received a drink pass for the Sapphire Lounge which was nice, even though I didn't use. read more

This is an intriguing independent hotel. For the price, Hotel Ruby meets the need to sleep and shower affordably. We found our double room generous in size (especially for a downtown city hotel), clean, though a bit run-down. There was a mini freezer/fridge and microwave in our room, pleasant staff and a free breakfast laid out in the bar downstairs (odd to eat in a bar, but prompted chuckles with other guests). The quirky, modern decor provides a conversation topic too, it certainly won't be like any other Spokane hotel. If you are expecting a Hilton level experience, stop reading now, and prepare yourself to pay the Hilton price per night, per meal and parking fee. They welcomed our two 20 pound dogs, with a single $25 flat fee, regardless of length of stay. Finding somewhere for dogs to potty in downtown was a challenge, but that was our lack of forethought, not the hotels. Where guest should prepare themselves; the parking lot is far too small, so it is likely you will need to park at their other hotel (very large, 2 level lot) and walk back - approximately 3 blocks. This is inconvenient but not unmanageable. However, it did surprised me we would be charged $5 per day for this twice a day walk (I mean parking). Each day, we had to plan carefully how best to access items we normally leave in our vehicle, when it is readily accessible. One negative the hotel could improve; the lack of shower water pressure. They opted for a 'rainfall' shower head that might work well when pressure is abundant, but it made rinsing impossible with the modest stream available at this facility. And a coffee pot in each room would be a nice addition too. read more

My family and I regularly stay in hotels either just to get out of our house for a weekend or when we travel. I'm going to estimate that we have stayed in around 100 different hotels in the last four years and I would have to say this is the worst experience that we have had, to date. First, let me say, they did a spectacular job with the remodel. This place was a DUMP prior to the remodel and it's now a very modern trendy spot. The lounge is gorgeous and even with the very minimal selection of liquor, it was very enjoyable. They also provide a "free drink voucher" upon check in which is good for one glass of wine or beer per rented room. We stayed in a suite which accommodated our entire family very well. We made a day of it and wandered around the downtown area of our home town and enjoyed how close the hotel was to everything we had hoped to hit while down there. They charged us $5 for each of our vehicles (we had two) to park at the hotel yet the parking was so incredibly tight that my truck was nearly impossible to get out once it was parked. Then upon returning for our night on the town we saw that every spot had been taken and nearly half of the vehicles in the lot did NOT have the "paid to park" paper in their window. Clearly they do not enforce their "paid guests only" in the lot. So what did we pay for? Our room was clean and very comfortable but it seems like they spent more time in the aesthetic of the room rather than the functionality. The "fitted sheets" did NOT fit at all. I woke up numerous times to the fitted sheet curling up around me because it kept slipped off. The trains that came by every hour or so were tolerable BUT the noise level IN the hotel was awful. The people in the rooms above us were stomping, slamming the door, etc. I had no intention of complaining about the experience (life happens, I'm usually pretty easy to please and quick to get over things) except they also screwed up the charges for the room. I won't elaborate but basically I paid everything in cash (deposit included) because I have had issues in the past with hotels putting a very long hold on funds for a deposit..anyway..they ended up fudging my charges even with using the cash and didn't even think to notify me before taking action on their own. I will pay the extra $20 to stay at the Davenport next time we decide to have a "staycation". read more

We were attending a concert at the Bing Crosby Theater, which turned out to be just steps away, so the Ruby really fit the bill. I admit, it doesn't look like much from the street; the parking lot access looks like an alley; room access is motel-style, from the (inner) exterior of the building, by steep staircases or elevator. Room views are of the next building's brick wall and the hotel's parking lot, and parking is minimal & snug, but everything else about this place is great! At $73+ tax per night for a king bed room plus breakfast, it was a super value. The staff was courteous and the room was clean & quiet. No frills, but it had free parking, free wifi, a flat screen TV, mini fridge, microwave, iron/ironing board, great shower, big fluffy towels, and a super comfy bed - we've paid twice the price and not been as comfortable! They have a nice bar on the street level, that converts to the breakfast area in the morning, with expanded Continental-style options. When we arrived, we parked free out front in their delivery zone, to check in and offload our belongings. Since there were no spaces left in their hotel's small parking lot, they referred us to the free lot at their sister hotel, Ruby II, half a block away. By the time we got back to our room, a parking spot had opened up, so we just moved our car back to our hotel. Since they pride themselves on their security, the parking lot & stairs to the rooms are both gated/locked after hours, and they give you a code to get in. All in all, it was a very pleasant experience and we look forward to returning. read more

I checked in after 8 pm with a group of teenagers for a debate tournament at Gonzaga University. I had booked a reservation over the phone a month before, called the week prior to leaving to confirm, let them know of our late arrival time and also to again confirm they knew I had a group of (very well behaved) teenagers. They were very polite on the phone and reassured me multiple times everything was in order. When we arrived, the front desk attendant Aaron was extremely rude, told me he almost cancelled my reservation even though I noted a late arrival, made many eye rolls and sighs because I had teenagers with me. He also lectured ME because his computer system did not have any notations for when I called, as if that was my fault. He was one of the most disrespectful people I ever ever dealt with and I had to ask my students to step outside so they wouldn't have to listen to his unacceptable comments. Then, the "non-smoking" rooms all smelled like smoke. I will be contacting the hotel manager but do not stay at Hotel Ruby!! read more
