Hotel Posada San Juan is a delightful and welcoming hotel in Valladolid that I want to go back to
read moreagain and again. Located about a 10-minute walk south of the main square, this hotel is unassuming on the outside, but stunning when you walk in. The hallways are wide and airy, with lovely decor and details to make you feel calm and relaxed from the first moment. We booked a deluxe king room for 3 nights. Our room was a corner room on the second floor overlooking the pool. The room is spacious with a comfortable bed, a hammock (yes, a hammock in your room!), a large dresser and another cabinet for more surface area and storage, and a large and lovely bathroom. There is no bathtub, but the shower is amazing. The bathroom is partially "open air" with a rain shower head. Showering was quite a unique experience. Breakfast is included with your stay and it's awesome. There is self serve coffee, tea, and juices, and bread and fruit. You can choose an entree (choices are omelette, pancakes, waffle, huevos rancheros). The special is definitely a must try. It's served with warm tortillas, beans, and salsa. The hotel offers a few unique experiences. The one we took a part of was the Ek Balam guided tour and half day at a private cenote (YES!!! A *private* cenote to yourselves!). There is also a day trip to Rio Lagartos (nature reserve, pink sand beaches, and flamingos!), a cooking class, and a mixology class. The Ek Balam and cenote Chenxunan trip must be reserved in advance and it's only one group per day. The day trip includes transportation, cold water and soft drinks, a delicious multi-course meal at the cenote, and of course an entire cenote for you to enjoy for 3-4 hours! Our guide for Ek Balam, Juan, was a wonderful and knowledgeable gentleman who told us stories and details that really enriched our exploration of the ancient ruins. Ek Balam is not as popular as the nearby Chichen Itza but definitely worth a visit. The pyramid is climbable and features a very interesting excavated tomb with wonderfully preserved carvings. Cenote Chenxunan was absolutely gorgeous. The cenote is privately owned an they take great care to preserve the land. A lot of the popular cenotes in the area get hundreds and thousands of visitors a day. But this cenote gets up to 12-15 visitors a day. We saw the local flora and fauna thriving in this preserved area. The swim in the cenote was absolutely delightful and revitalizing. It's fairly large with a cave and many stalactites. We even saw a couple of owls and heard some bats! Our stay at Hotel Posada San Juan was amazing and if we're back in Valladolid, I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. All the staff were wonderful.

All of the reviews are completely accurate and then some. We stayed for 3 nights in June. The
read moreservice and property are excellent! Gabriel helped us even before we arrived, as I called him with a few questions. We stayed in the new building. The room and facility were clean and lovely. The outdoor shower was awesome! Breakfast was delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel dogs were adorable. This is where we'll stay when we come back to Valladolid.

**Review (Restaurant Only):**
read more We visited the restaurant at this hotel with much higher expectations. While the setting is beautiful--the restaurant and the surrounding grounds are very nice--the service and food left a lot to be desired. The portions were quite small, and the food itself was mediocre at best. We ordered drinks, which were fair, but we have had much better cocktails on the beach at Isla Mujeres. Our meal took about forty-five minutes to arrive, and the dishes were served one at a time, leaving some of us eating while others waited. The most disappointing moment came when our order of fajitas was dropped by the waiter, who then left the spilled food on the ground for the cat to eat. By the time a new order came out, everyone at the table had already finished and we were ready to leave. Overall, I would pass on this restaurant. Perhaps they can manage service for two people, but handling a table of twelve was clearly beyond their capacity.

A really lovely hotel in Valladolid. I stayed here for one night as a part of a bachelorette trip,
read moreand I so enjoyed my time here (and in Valladolid in general! Definitely worth a visit). There's a beautiful boutique next to check in. It's small, but there are some dresses and purses and shoes and etc to browse. All really lovely stuff! The space between check in to your rooms is open air and there's a pool and some seats where you can order food or drinks or else just relax. There's also a really cute stray cat who wanders around. The rooms had everything you could want: a hammock, yummy smelling soaps and shampoos, AC, a TV (I believe?), a desk, a comfy bed. The windows are more like shutters which is unfortunate bc AC escapes and noise gets in. Apparently some dogs were howling around 2a.m., but I didn't hear because I always sleep with earplugs. We had breakfast before heading out for the day and it was really yummy! I split with a friend and I think we got a tortilla / egg/ bean dish (?) and an avocado toast + some fruit and tea. They had tons of options so everyone (even the vegetarians among us) found something we liked. Such a wonderful spot if you're looking for someplace to stay during your trip to Valladolid!

Hacienda Kaan AC can be very difficult to find if you attempt to use Google Maps or any of the
read morelisted addresses. Save yourself some stress and please use our directions to drive to this wonderful establishment: From Cancun/Airport - Take 307 to 180 to 180D (basically follow the signs to Valladolid/Merida). Be warned, this is a toll road. It costs about 300 pesos and they do not accept foreign currency or credit cards. The cost is about $15-20 USD, but will save you about 90minutes. Since it is a toll road, there are no towns or gas stations till you hit Valladolid (about 90km). After about an hour (we drove the speed limit), take 295 South towards Valladolid. At the roundabout, follow the signs to Cancun via 180 (the Northeastern part of the "wheel" if you look at a map). At the stop sign, take a left and cross over the highway and 2 exit/entrance ramps to the Hotel (It's a huge sign/gated entrance). If you see Mayapan Traditional Agave Distillery, you've gone West instead of East. If you see the police stop in Valladolid, you've gone too far and do not use the 180 that runs through town; it will take you all the way to Tulum. Five Stars isn't enough to describe how amazing Hacienda Kaan AC. A hidden gem in the Yucatan that has set the standard for all of our future stays at any Resort/Bed & Breakfast. We were hesitant to write this review, because we thought about keeping it for ourselves and the locals that visit here often. If you are looking for a combination of rest and adventure, look no further. The Hacienda, itself, is rich in history, which is detailed in a book written in 1864. The book, "El Filibustero" described the adventure and love story of a pirate that resulted in the property that is translated from Mayan to mean "High in the Sky," hence the hotel's other name "El Olimpo." Even the main building, El Castillo, was reconstructed from the archaeological remains of a 16th century castle (large pictures of the site are located in the resorts restaurant) and contains an extensive collection of artwork from that period. Yes, you are literally staying in a museum and historical site located in the heart of the Yucatan. More on adventure: We highly recommend that you have your own transportation if you decide to stay here. The hotel is located 15minutes North of ancient city of Valladolid, a great place for strolling through its colonial-era stone streets to visit extremely tourist friendly restaurants, chapels, markets, and cenotes. Three major Mayan Ruins are located within driving distance: Chichen Itza, Ek' Balam, and Coba (the last is located in Quintana Roo half way between the hotel and the ocean), Many cenotes are located around the hotel in addition to their own private one (the mechanism used for raising and lowering people looks ancient and scary - we don't think it has been in operation for years). More on relaxation: During your stay, you can enjoy their pools, wander the grounds, or just relax in their comfortable rooms with jetted tubs and powerful AC units. You'll basically have your own private Butler that works the grounds and the restaurant. Edwardo worked two of the three nights that we visited. English was not his first language, but he was extremely patient and friendly. Helping us despite our horrid Spanish (we've gotten rusty over the last ten years since living in Juarez) and teaching us some Mayan in the process: "Ni'bo'olal!". Each stay comes with a complimentary breakfast at their restaurant too (Please see our separate review for the restaurant). I could write pages on how amazing and relaxing our stay was Hacienda Kaan AC. We'd love to return and, if your looking for an amazing hotel on your adventures in the Yucatan, we suggest you that you plan your stay here.

Found this gem on Yelp. Beautiful Hacienda full of history. The grounds are gorgeous, and the new
read morerooms are fantastic. The staff is friendly, and willing to share the stories they know about the place. It's so nice to stay in a place so full of history, and that is keeping its charm and not becoming another touristy place changing to suit the patrons. My only complaint is that when I asked for Chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate) for breakfast, they offered me chocomilk (which is like nesquick). But I did have some great Mexican eggs and conchas. This is a great place to

read more Positives + The beds were comfortable by my expectations of rock hard beds in Mexico. + The water was HOT and the pressure was great. + Location was easy to access from the main street in town and walking distance to the town center and lots of cute parks. + Private lot parking was great to have. Negatives - When we arrived, they charged us an extra $10 per night for a second guest, and then put us in a room with 2 queen beds versus a king as requested. I'm not sure if they thought we weren't a couple or if they didn't have our originally requested room ready. We probably should have inquired about this more. - In our room, the two beds didn't fit the space. You could barely squeeze by one in the doorway, and the other blocked the door to get to the balcony. - We were in room 19 on the second floor and at the end, so we had no wifi in our room at all. - No filtered water in a dispenser was available in the lobby. I might stay again, but I'd definitely compare other similarly priced area hotels.

This was my first opportunity to introduce my kids (ages 5 and 7) to staying at a hostel, and it
read morewas a lovely experience! They loved sleeping in bunk beds, and eating in the outdoors kitchen. I loved that they could relax on the hammocks at the hostel and play on the playground on the nearby square (no crossing streets needed) while we were getting ready to leave. There is a lovely garden where you can hang out at a chair, in the kitchen or on a hammock. There are mosquitos in the evenings, but the staff bring out mosquito coils to burn to keep them away. The kitchen is adequately stocked with everything you need to cook a meal, although the burners take a bit to heat up water (for making pasta, for example). There is plenty of filtered water that is safe to drink and refill your water bottle. There are bikes to rent if you choose. There is no on-site parking but there is plenty of nearby street parking. The beds are clean and the mattresses are covered with mattress pads/protectors which I appreciated. The breakfast is available from 7-10AM and was super delicious - I wish I could've gotten seconds. I would definitely stay again!

Amazing Hostel! Colourful and Charming with a Friendly and Relaxed Atmosphere - Perfectly Located
read morein Valladolid! I stayed at Hostel La Candelaria for three nights (November 15-18, 2015) as a solo female traveler in the 6 bed female dorm. This was my second time staying at this hostel. I absolutely LOVE this hostel! The hostel is located inside a beautiful pastel-coloured colonial building and situated perfectly on a quiet and lovely small park and square, just three blocks north of Valladolid's central plaza and park. It is also three blocks away from the ADO bus terminal. You can find everything you need within walking distance of the hostel including delicious local restaurants, banks, grocery shopping, the local market, and city attractions. The hostel has daily housekeeping staff who do a fantastic job of keeping all areas of the hostel clean. I stayed in the 6 bed female dorm which is situated on the second floor of the hostel. The mattresses and pillows were very comfortable. There is a medium-sized locker for every bed and locks are provided (bonus!). There are also a good amount of electrical outlets situated around the room, with most of them located right beside the beds (convenient for charging electronics in the night). Even though there is no air conditioning in the room (or anywhere in the hostel), there is a huge fan on the roof and a few smaller ones around the room which created good air flow for sleeping in the night. There is also a small balcony in the room with doors that overlooks the beautiful and peaceful "La Candelaria" park. This hostel offers bike rentals for 80 pesos a day or 15 pesos per hour, which is a great option for getting around. I rented a bike one morning and rode to some nearby Mayan villages and off the beaten path cenotes and also used it to get around Valladolid. The breakfast was amazing! There was a good variety of options to choose from, including eggs made to order and cooked to your preferred style, bread, jam, fresh seasonal fruits (watermelon, pineapple, papaya, mango and more), a selection of cereals with milk, yogurt and coffee. I really enjoyed eating breakfast in the outdoor kitchen seating area among the tropical garden! It was such a lovely setting to start my morning. I interacted with a few different staff members during my stay and they were all very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with offering advice and information about Valladolid. The staff spoke fluent English and Spanish, among a few other languages. Upon checking in, the staff will provide you with a great map of Valladolid which indicates restaurants, banks, supermarkets, and attractions on it. The hostel also has organized binders in three different languages that provide detailed information about the various things to see and do, in and around Valladolid, including info like costs and how to get there and back. This was very helpful! The hostel offers free Wi-Fi in the common areas (it did not work in the female dorm). The signal was consistently strong and the connection worked best for me in the outdoor garden/kitchen area, the reception area and the second floor lounge. The internet was even fast enough for me to be able to make Skype phone calls home, which was great. The hostel also has one computer with internet in the reception area for guests to use. There are lots of washrooms and showers situated in various areas of the hostel and I loved how colourful the outdoor ones were! The water pressure was weak and hot water was hit or miss, but this is typical throughout the Yucatan. The hostel has so many different common areas, which I loved! If you need some quiet alone time to relax or if you want to socialize and meet new people, there are lots of places to do both. There is a beautiful and well maintained garden area behind the hostel with a group of hammocks, which was lovely. There is a colourful outdoor kitchen and eating area among the tropical foliage, as well as an indoor kitchen. Inside the hostel, there is the reception area, a lounge on the main level with couches and pre-loaded movies on a flatscreen TV, a lounge on the second floor with seating and a balcony that overlooks the quiet square, and the rooftop terrace. There were always other travelers hanging out in the common areas and I found it very easy to meet people and make friends. Overall, I loved everything about Hostel La Candelaria! It has such a relaxed, peaceful, chill and social vibe and everyone that I met here was so friendly and welcoming. The appearance of the hostel is also very aesthetically beautiful and I enjoyed the bright paint colours used on the walls and building and the unique decor. This hostel has a lot of character and is very charming. The city of Valladolid is absolutely lovely and it is definitely worth a stop! Even though it is small, it was my favourite place that I visited during my two and half week Yucatan travels. The colourful and colonial architecture w
