My favorite hotel in Perugia. A short walk from the center, it is quiet, clean and welcoming, with an amazing panoramic rooftop and pool.

If you're staying in or near Perugia and you want to get away from the crowds of the city center,…read moreyou can't do better than Castello di Monterone. Situated on the opposite side of the valley east of the city, along a ridge that separates Perugia from Ponte Valliceppi, the renovated castle is both a perfect spot for exploring Perugia and as a jumping off point for trips to Assisi, Spoleto, or wherever else in Umbria your fancy takes you. If you have a car, Perugia's city center is a short 5 to 10 minute drive, and taxi's can get you there for about EUR 12. The nighttime views of Perugia are stunning, and the castle itself could not be more charming with winding stairs that lead to rooms, balconies, and towers, in addition to the hearths, portals, and dungeons that you'd expect from a castle whose foundation was started in the 14th century. Although the rooms are not big, they are very comfortable, nicely appointed, and many have spectacular views of the Umbrian countryside. Try for a room on the western side of the castle for the best views. Finally, the hotel's on-site restaurant, Gradale, serves delicious Umbrian fare at what we considered to be very reasonable prices. Some of the better meals we had during a recent trip to Tuscany and Umbria were our meals at Gradale. All in all, our stay at Castello di Monterone was one of the most pleasant aspects of our recent vacation, and the hotel itself one of the best we've stayed in in recent memory.

Just spent 2 nights here but I wish I spent a few more days in and near Perugia (very under rated…read moreplace for tourists but that's probably a good thing for a lot of people). Pros- - 2 of the workers I met (of the 2) were extremely helpful. My cell phone USB got damaged so I couldn't charge my phone and the nearby shops were all closed (many mom and pop shops are closed on Sundays and evenings). The young, blonde, female worker let me use her charger when she saw we had the same phones. Things like that stand out IMO. The male worker too let me use the charger and he helped carry my suitcase out of the hotel. Overall though I found most people I met in Italy are extremely helpful just to be nice. You don't get that in most of the world based on my observations. - price. For 2 nights I got a clean room with shower and toilet for 74 Euros including the tourist tax. That's lower than Motel 6 prices lol. Granted breakfast was not included but there was a nearby bakery/cafe that had excellent Nutella croissants and the best cappuccinos that I have ever had super cheap. - free wifi (see below though) - excellent shower- hot water and good pressure - by European standards, large bathroom -location- although you aren't right in the main plaza where most of the sites and hotels are are, it was still good. You are directly across from the escalators up there (one was the strangest and coolest things I have ever seen as they are in an "underground" part of town from the 1200's if I'm not mistaken); You are in a less touristy part of Perugia (although again Perugia is not touristy to me anyway) right next to (meaning you don't have to take the escalators) a bunch of cute little restaurants, cafes, and bars. I had a great dinner at the Iris Restaurant (not affiliated anymore with each other) just a few steps down, and again a great to go breakfast at the cafe. Cons- - wifi worked on my phone and Kindle but not on my laptop which was strange - when I walked in with my suitcase, you are walking on a bunch of pebbles which wasn't that easy and not good on wheels - keys a little difficult to figure out - the decor in the single occupancy room I had was a mix of (from my observations anyway!!) dining room curtains, thrift store furnishings, and there were gaps in the floors- again though I don't need "charm" as much as I need price and location Would recommend and probably would stand at again if I went back to Perugia.
