Gran Hotel Santo Domingo - The view from our window. Would've been better if there was no window.

Gran Hotel Santo Domingo

Upon entering the lobby the sense that this place could've been a former mental institution hung in…read morethe air. If I were ever to be murdered in my sleep this would definitely be the place for it to happen. Unfortunately, our selection was limited and we were already late for a wedding that we had to drive another 1 1/2 hours to San Francisco Ixhuatan and were not yet dressed properly for. Apparently, there are not that many hotels in Juchitan De Zaragoza, because it seems this establishment had no qualms at charging us $899 Pesos (about $70 US) for a room that one could only describe as a place where heroin addicts wouldn't shoot up in. This is especially steep given that cleaner and newer facilities in border cities with the U.S. like Tijuana would run around $350 Pesos ($30 US) per night. After checking into this dump we were helped by a member of their staff who came off as serial killer-ish and were lead down a dimly lit hallway to our room. In between the doors to each room there were these second set of clear frosted glass shower-style doors separating everyone of them. I never found out what was behind them but I assume it's the viewing rooms where people get to watch our torture and beheading through peepholes. If this creepiness was not bad enough the relative filth of the rooms was enough to deter us from sleeping even on top of the sheets. Apparently the last time this room had been decorated was 1965 as the beds definitely were older than me (I'm 33). With a view of a filthy alley from our window, a toilet located in our shower (YES IN THE SHOWER), and a sign over the sink warning us not to drink the water it is no wonder why when we came back from the wedding we promptly checked out of the room. Unfortunately we could not get our money back and ended up swallowing the cost. If you ever end up in Juchitan De Zaragoza and need a place to stay just drive the hour and a half back to the port city of Salina Cruz and stay at either the City Express or One Hotels. They're cleaner, newer, and cheaper. The rooms there cost me $120 pesos ($10 US) less.
