When we first checked in, we were in the room immediately above the dining room. It was fine at night, very clean, the bathroom was small but big enough that you could take two steps inside of it, but with very weird, crooked murals on the walls. The next morning, it was a non-stop symphony of sounds, it sounded like someone was moving furniture and we discovered that we could hear EVERYTHING that was happening below (e.g., conversations, chairs being pulled out). We requested to move rooms and were kindly accommodated.
The next room had better mattresses and pillows with a smaller bathroom but two windows (plus!). We were happy with that room but unfortunately, the next morning, it was loud again--not quite as loud as the previous morning, but it still sounded like someone was moving furniture, non-stop.
I requested another move and it was met with some attitude from the front desk (I believe this time, it was one of the owners) who promptly told me "You're in a hotel." He eventually said his main goal was my happiness but our interactions from that point forward were awkward and stilted.
The third room was really small (my husband had to turn sideways when walking by the side of his bed) and the bathroom was so tight that I had to turn sideways to towel off after the shower. And the smell in the last room, it was like some weird body odor (two chairs) or something and I think housekeeping knew about it b/c they kept opening the windows when they were in the room. We ended up checking out several days early because the mattress on the third bed was horribly uncomfortable and we couldn't ask for another room change.
The location is great and the breakfasts are pretty good too, but internet was glitchy, rooms were pretty small, and bathrooms were even smaller. We gave them 24 hour's notice but their policy is 48 hour's notice. They ended up charging us for another day and then tried to charge us for all of the parking (three cars) for our entire party. The nice lady at the front eventually removed the parking fee altogether, but we were still charged for the extra day. I could see them charging us if they weren't able to re-book the room but there was a convention and all rooms in Amberg were sold out, so I'm sure they got twice the rate for that night.
I can't recommend this place. If you are American and don't speak or read German, very little literature is written in English (for tourist purposes) and they are not as nice to you. I think it's a major problem when I was waiting at the desk for help and they (twice) stopped helping me to help someone who spoke German. One of those times, the lady at the desk didn't know what "toilet paper" was, so the idea that they are fluent in English is not realistic. read more
