The hotel staff was extremely helpful with everything- including emails I sent to them months in advance inquiring about the wineries. The wineries were within walking distance which was a plus. Ours was a very nice 3+ Star Parador, and still within walking distance of the Cathedral and of course the Camino de Santiago. The Parador Hotel Sto. Domingo de la Calzada is located right next to the Cathedral (and Tower) and a simple turn off the Camino. It's a gorgeous Parador and occupies a 12th century former hospital. Built by Saint Dominic, it was used to give shelter to the pilgrims on the Road to Santiago. We walked around and were very impressed. And although we were very happy with our Bernardo choice, this Parador might have turned out even better.

While it will run you 10x what an albergue costs, if you haven't spoiled yourself since St. Jean, you should. The lower lobby level has a lot of historical artifacts from when this place was used way back when, and that ties nicely back to the history of the Camino de Santiago, so it's not like you aren't being a pilgrim. The breakfast buffet was also a nice break from the standard coffee/croissant. The rooms are comfortable, the bath tubs huge, and while the beds leave a little to be desired, in all honesty --- you have the room to yourself, and it feels like a slice of heaven. I would definitely come back if I ever find myself in northern Spain.

The service, however, is severely lacking. The food at dinner wasn't bad, just a bit pedestrian. The service at breakfast was rude, supercilious, and dismissive. The waiter brought exactly what he felt like bringing despite my having ordered in Spanish. After the 3rd time he tried to push eggs on me I said very slowly, "No. Me gusta. Huevos." He looked at me, stunned, as if to say, "The barbarians speak our language?!" He brought Americanos when cortados were requested, etc. Other guests had the same issues. Come here to stay. Go elsewhere to eat.

This is a place we fell in love during our escapade in Spain…read more The hotel is located in a building of the eighteenth century, in the middle of a completely transformed for a few hotel rooms in a minimalist style but with great attention to details. The building itself is located on the side of a mountain meadows where cows are grazing with their bells. Real wilderness with breathtaking views and all that suddenly a few kilometers from Gernika. Proximity of Gernika and Bilbao is an additional advantage of the hotel. Atmosphere Basque mountains, greenery, peace and the damn cow bells really captivated us. Uniquely decorated rooms, lounge with fireplace and great service adds another star to this place. In addition, you can order a dinner. Which due to the location and the Spanish custom of eating late is a great idea and make it easier for visitors not used. Dinner is prepared by the girls, who are both hotel staff. It turned out to be a real, home-Basque dinner. As starters we got stewed vegetables, which were simple but delicious dish. Then we got a huge portion of the peppers from the oven with sea salt and an even greater portion of paella. Plus a bottle of wine. What is nice about this hotel is the availability at all times selection of cakes, fruit, tea and coffee in the dining room. Free of charge :D Beautiful and peaceful place, great hotel, friendly service, excellent dinner, a great place to stay for trips around Bilbao. And not so expensive, in total for two guests for two nights we paid € 232.

* Great location. * Great value…read more * Clean and well appointed * Parking at a fair price * Friendly staff As a first time visitor, driving into Burgos late and lost, I passed through a lot of the city. Most parts and people as I asked for directions, were kind of uninviting. The AC Burgos,is in the part of town you want to be in. It's situated on the tree lined Paseo de Isla which runs along the river, where you can enjoy a stroll, see the Cathedral de Burgos, and walk to the Plaza Mayor, from which a lot of great restaurants are reachable. It's easier to park on the street in Burgos than in other places, though at ~10E for the hotel parking, I thought it was well worth not wasting time looking for a public parking spot. The decor of the hotel business oriented, but was very nice.

The only negative was a very hard, uncomfortable bed, and could not view menu online. So I'll post photos... Bummer was the small village had no wine tasting till the next morning and you could only do a tour. I've toured many wineries in my day and just wanted to taste local wine, but it wasn't possible in this village. Kind of a bummer.
This is a beautiful little hotel in the center of the Rioja Alta region between Haro and Logrono…read more There are several tasting rooms within a walking distance which is rare for Spain. Wine tasting in Spain is not what it is in California in that the wineries are really difficult to get to without a car or through an expensive tour group. Therefore, being able to stay in an area where you can walk to tasting rooms is a nice find. Beware however that the hotel is one of only 2 places you can eat within a walking distance. In the church courtyard is the second. On the plus side, not only are the tasting rooms and wineries just a short walk away, so are some breathtaking vistas of the Northern Rioja vineyards as they back up to the mountains. Definitely worth a few days just to unwind in the natural beauty. Definitely take a short walk up the road behind the church toward the mountains early morning and your eyes and senses will be rewarded!
