I made the huge mistake of bringing a stray dog here. After not being claimed and he became adoptable, I fostered him and provided photos, notes, and a foster report card recommending the right kind of home for him. None of it was shared or considered in his adoption. His adopters returned him after a week with false claims of "aggression." I immediately tried to contact the shelter and offered to adopt him if his life was at risk. My calls and emails were ignored. Nearly a week later, they told me he was "safe with a rescue," which was a lie--they euthanized him three days after they claimed he was safe. Even the shelter admitted they never saw aggression. They chose to believe lies and killed an innocent dog simply because someone wanted their money back. On top of this, most of the staff are rude and unhelpful (with the exception of one woman), and despite always having multiple people behind the counter, they rarely answer the phone or respond to emails. This shelter does not act in the best interest of the animals. A dog's life was cut short because of their negligence, dishonesty, and misplaced priorities. I will never trust this shelter again, and I pray no other animal suffers the same fate.

People work and getting to the facility during the time they say they are open weekdays from 11 am to 5 pm is an issue for the employed. They called late in the afternoon on Thursday 4/16 to ask their battery of questions to determine suitability. At that point I didn't know if I could get my family member there before near their closing time of 5 pm on Friday 4/17. They mentioned there was another interested party. I agreed that if someone came to take the cat before I could get there late Friday 4/17 they should process him. They said they couldn't hold the animal for me so I was trying to be cooperative. However, we were able to be there today April 17 before their posted opening time of 11 am only to discover they had already opened and processed the animal to someone else before the posted opening time. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Then they implied that I had miscommunicated my interest. If they can do that, please, beware of what they post on animal profiles to lure you in. Don't trust it is accurate and the animal is truly what they describe. If there was miscommunication, it was on their side of this interaction.

After speaking to our specific vet, he highly recommended a kitten companion for our cat. So we have adopted a kitten. I wouldn't recommend this shelter. They don't seem to want to adopt cats out to loving homes and string you along with prolonged communication.

This organization treats their animals amazingly and truly cares about each cat they take in. The rescue is not your typical animal shelter which feels dingy and depressing. The rooms are clean, decorated, and filled with activities to make the cats feel at home. I adopted my own cat from the rescue two years ago and the process was straightforward and smooth, landing me the most awesome cat ever. Their petfinder listings and website show photos of all their adoptable animals, and their facebook page is kept very up-to-date. In my opinion, NBAR sets the gold standard for what an animal rescue should be. Of note, NBAR only has cats at their building- I believe they work with a dog foster organization and can direct people to adoptable dogs.

I'm a bit upset because it's evident that the mom should be fixed, but it could be that no one in his neighborhood is aware of the practice. I'm writing it out of a great feeling of resentment because I believe that I was fed bold-faced lies by the staff in order to push me toward an adoption. The sign on the window said that the cat I was considering was a five year old male. On the Saturday before our adoption, we asked a staff member of the cat's medical history. We were told that the cat had been very timid and was losing some weight, and that it had a distended stomach possibly from worms. That wasn't anything we couldn't handle so we decided to adopt. We wanted a 5 year old male because we had a cat and the two would complement each other well. When we sat down to sign the papers, though, that's when the truth started to come out. At least partial truths. Apparently, the cat had no teeth. We asked why, and they had no answers. It also had a heart murmur. I know the former staff member INTENTIONALLY left this out, because the distended stomach was there with this information. She just straight up left it out! We still went through with the paperwork, and at the end, they informed us that the cat was actually 7 years old. All of these things collectively should have told me to cut and run, but in the end the cat needed a good home, so we followed through with the adoption. A few days later, we took the cat to a vet. The vet informed us that actually the cat was more like 10 years old.... oh, and it was also a girl! So we went from a 5 year old male, to a seven year old male, to a ten year old female. CAHS either has no idea what they're doing, or they are purposely handing out false information in order to get pets adopted, which I'm certain is illegal. I likely won't pursue legal action because I'm sure no one will care, and I obviously will love and care for the pet that I've adopted. But folks should be aware of what's going on here, and be prepared for some deceit. CAHS should face some accountability.

Shocked and appalled by my experience with Oakland County Animal Control & Pet Adoption Center…read more Went through the volunteer orientation process and was told at my first volunteer date, I be directed to a dog as well as walked through the setup and walking process. That did not happen. I was simply given a dog, showed to leash them, provided with no animal history or direction and was sent out for a walk. The shelter manager was immediately rude and nasty, saying I didn't follow process, despite no walkthrough and dog info/history. The dog I was with was sweet, but unbeknownst to me, they were other dog aggressive. On my walk, I avoided outside stimuli to the best of my ability and stayed away from other animals. Towards the end of the walk, I took the dog to the pool area. Another dog came near, barking. I wrapped the leash extra tight on around my hand. Both dogs were aggressive and I restrained the dog with my whole being. Despite pulling with all my might, the dog broke free and went after the other. Immediately, I went to re-restrain the dog. The shelter manager, who couldn't handle the dog either, screamed at, berated and blamed me for the incident. While I was on the ground, trying to restrain the dog, with all my might, doing all I could physically could to stop the incident. Eventually, other shelter employees were able to assist, but not without issue. I ended up with a two injuried fingers and physical and emotional trauma. As well as the other volunteer with injury/trauma - as well as issues with the dogs. To which, I tried to assist in concern, resolution and regard in anyway possible. The lack of direction and guidance, then excessive criticism and lack of support and concern, was unacceptable. It's incredibly disheartening and disabling. I've never experienced such lack of concern and straight up attack from an organization. Nor such complete disregard for my injury and trauma - invalidating my pain, swelling and experience. I had nothing but the most positive and helpful of intentions. I feel deeply for everyone and all animals involved, tried to/will do anything to help in the resolution - to which I implicitly expressed . Oakland County Animal Shelter was unprofessional, blame shifting - and there actions led injury, trauma and unnecessary pain and suffering. Currently seeking medical care for it effected my normal functioning. Especially of concern is the shelter manager, who was sexist, gaslighting and lacked any support and care for the volunteers, employees and animals. He is disrespectful, rude and completely insensitive to humans and animals. Such blatant disrespect and abuse of power is unacceptable - especially in a nonprofit setting. The way I was made to feel was inappropriate, discriminatory disrespectful, wrongfully accusatory as well as unethically critizing and unprofessional.

They truly have a heart of gold and take such good care of all the dogs and cats here! She was great at keeping in touch with us and keeping us posted about our application.
